Got the solution
With the current sitemap mod, you need to go to your various content types and/or taxonomies and enable them to show up on the sitemap. Else only the homepage (web root) will appear. Many bugs against the mod about this behavior. Fortunately for all domains I have on D6 I have the latest code working, so it is possible to arrive at success. Oh, also I needed to purge the temp files/dirs at one point upgrading from old alpha/beta code somewhere along the way. Run cron lots of times, etc... 'tis fun, but possible. :-)

Glad you solved the issue
Sorry I couldn't help: I don't use the sitemap module partly because I think it's not soup yet and partly because I don't need it.
It's difficult to strike a good balance between settings and "automatic" functionality without a specific use case in mind -- i.e. public modules that are used on a variety of sites. That's why the open community process works best.
If you build your site correctly the spiders will index it completely without the need for a sitemap. I'm not sure how much value a sitemap really brings to the process unless you are embedding links in flash components.
Always check how Google sees your site at http://www.google.com/webmasters/
Site Map is not required always!
In My opinion and experience site map is suitable for static content and for small sites. When we built allnews.in portal, we bought a licensed software to create dynamic sitemap that created thousands of new pages every day.
Since we keep old as well as new content we felt the site map is not required and removed it. To our surprise Google now index almost all the pages without any sitemap tool to generate. You can check using the following site:allnews.in in Google search bar. Also the Indexing setting can be done via Google webmaster tools
Hope this helps !
