How to cooperate?

We encourage users to post events happening in the community to the community events group on https://www.drupal.org.

After having introduced yourself and your site, you can share your ideas here or do some brainstorming about ways we can use our sites to cooperate in order to collectively have a greater positive impact on our world.

Since I am the first one to post in this group, and I don't know yet what other sites there are and what topic they cover, I don't have any specific ideas on this topic.

Generally, though, here are a few thoughts:
1) Since it is a Drupal specific group, which Drupal modules/tools can we specifically use to work together?
2) we can have a block with the rss feed of other Drupal for Good sites, especially those working in the same field.
3) we can organize and coordinate action/information campaigns spread over several web sites.
4) encourage users of goodsite1 to have a look at goodsite2 and register there using the Drupal login user@www.goodsite1.org so that the users from goodsite2 can become aware of goodsite1, and vice-versa (am I confusing you?).

etc.

Obviously, it will all depend of the nature of the sites, and the willingness of different site owners to work together.

I am really looking forward to reading contributions by other group members.

Blessings.

I'm David, a Managing Partner at CivicSpace. We exist to use Drupal for Good, in fact that is our mission.

At CivicSpace we wrote the original code that enables the concept of install profiles... most groups doing "good" don't have time to be Drupal experts. So with an install profile, we can create a CivicSpace distribution just for charities or churches, etc.

We are also rolling out CivicSpace On Demand... again folks doing good in the world need to be experts in what they are doing, not in how to install, configure and maintain Drupal.

I'm really interested in all the discussion in this group. Looking forward to it.

Reviving this thread.

The "drupal for good" group is in a sorry state. Currently it works as a service announcement:
1) for NGO looking for an affordable Drupal developer.
2) for webmaster to advertise their 'drupal site for good'.

As per my original announcement above, I would like to find a way for web sites who are operating to change our society for better, to come together and cooperate so that collectively we have a greater positive impact.

@geilhufe: thank you for your reply. I am sorry I didn't get back to you one year ago!

Who is interested?

augustin's picture

The first question is:
Who is generally interested in greater cooperation between drupal sites for good?

There is me. There probably is David / geilhufe.
Anyone else?

Let's do a head count for a week or two. According to the feedback, we can then set a very low target on what we could do together.

And a special thanks to CivicSpace for all they have already done :)

I am!

I signed up for this group when I became active with Drupal a few months ago, because I am overseeing a major project to move an international NGO's proprietary multisite/multilingual CMS system into Drupal over the next year. (We have a special website documenting the project in real time at http://drupalproject.iofc.org, which we hope will not only be of use to us but also in due time to the Drupal community.)

I do not know if I can contribute anything to the Drupal for Good group, but I am excited about the potential of Drupal to meet the needs of NGOs. I am also in discussion about the possibility of setting up a small company to specialise in providing free or very-low-cost web/cms solutions for small, grassroots non-profits which are doing fantastic work but have no money for a web presence. My idea would be to do some well-remunerated consulting work (50%) to bring in needed income, and use the other 50%(?) of time to do pro bono work.

Not sure if this is on topic. But I will stay connected with this group and see if I can engage.

"Building relationships of

"Building relationships of trust across the world's divides" is a very worthy cause. :) I wish you a lot of success.

Thanks Edward for your reply.
You already have a very good idea for this group: make a directory of developers willing to do some pro-bono work for small non-profits.

I am also thinking along the lines of sharing information and users among sites.
My own goal is to build relationships of trust across the divides of Drupal sites for good... but I am not yet too clear on how to go about it.

Blessings. :)

Definitely some interest here.

My most current project is an expansion of what's already present at www.changelearning.ca. I try to do around 10 hours of pro-bono work per month in literacy and education related projects, but I'm also exploring an idea in the area of microcredit. I'm also open to participating in other areas beyond that.

My strongest drupal skill is theming, but I can customize/build modules and do general setup.

Thanks for posting.

We are three so far. Together, we can accomplish a few things without it taking too much time. Others will join us later.

Microcredits are good. Wasn't is the subject of last year's Nobel Peace Price?
Indeed: "for advancing economic and social opportunities for the poor, especially women, through their pioneering microcredit work."

Yes it was

trevortwining's picture

I'm looking for a more local application of it, there's people close to home that could benefit from the same service, although I think the economies of scale might be different.

Maybe we can explore if there's anything in our current works where we could cooperate.

Back to install profiles

trevortwining's picture

Going back to install profiles, I think there's real value for non-profits there. I'll need to read up more on their use because I haven't used them very much at all yet.

Install profiles

I started a separate discussion thread to discuss what to include within an install profile:
