OpenPublish vs Drupal eJournal Module

Events happening in the community are now at Drupal community events on www.drupal.org.

Hi All, I'm looking to get info regarding OpenPublish and Drupal eJounal module (http://drupal.org/project/ejournal)...
I'm new to both and would like to understand their differences. Thanks!

What do you want to do with

What do you want to do with OpenPublish? Or may be I should ask, what are you trying to achieve with OP and eJournal?

Basically, eJournal is a module, whereas OpenPublish is an installation profile. Lets put it in this way: OpenPublish is like a semi-furnished apartment, whereas eJournal is just a bookshelf where you can put books on.

You can probably compare http://drupal.org/project/ejournal_profile with OpenPublish.

Hope this helps.

@Stattelr, thanks for the

@Stattelr, thanks for the reply... I'm looking into launching an online magazine type site that features news/articles. Also, I want to be able to publish journals submitted by authors and have a peer-review capability. So, I was initially looking into OP for this and came across eJournal. What I hope to understand is what can eJournal do that OP can't or vise-versa.

The link you provided (http://drupal.org/project/ejournal_profile) does not seem to provide any comparison - just info on ejournal.

Also, I check out your site (sTattler.com) and it looks like something similar to what I hope to do. I see you have sections for articles, books and Journals as well.

May be I did not clearly

May be I did not clearly understand as there was not much information provided.

When you mention Journal, I take it as an article in scientific (or non-scientific) Journals, for example (JASA, The Journal of the American Statistical Association). If you want to run such a journal, then I am afraid, OP is not the right installation profile. You can probably integrate ejournal module in it but I won't personally do it because of (lack of) development activity of ejournal.

By the provided link (http://drupal.org/project/ejournal_profile), what I meant is that OP is similar to the ejournal_profile (which is an installation profile). An installation profile is something that has everything in a package (Drupal+ related modules and so on). eJournal_profile is obviously developed to create a site that publishes peer reviewed articles. But since its development has not been extended beyond Drupal 5.0, I personally do not recommend going for it.

For journals only, you can try http://pkp.sfu.ca/?q=ojs instead, which has a large user base and is actively being maintained.

However, if you just want a site like stattler.com then you can't beat OP. OP is the best, and that's why I use it.

@statter, ok thanks for the

@statter, ok thanks for the clarification on the comparison link you've provided. I understand the profile similarities. Yes, I want a site similar to the sTattler.com BUT also want to publish peer-review articles (Journals). Sort of like a hybrid site. If OP can't do the peer-review part I need I guess I can look into the OpenJournalSystem (PKB) link you gave me: http://pkp.sfu.ca/?q=ojs...

Question: It looks like OJS is also a drupal based platform. I wonder how easy it wold be to integrate the two with like a single sign-on solution. If it is using Drupal I imagine it should not be too difficult and perhaps I can just pull some of the key modules for doing peer-review of articles. Appreciate your thoughts on that.

So far I know, OJS is not a

So far I know, OJS is not a Drupal based system. To my knowledge, they cannot be integrated.

OpenPublish is more actively maintained

I don't know what the plans are for eJournal for D7 and beyond.

Yes, it looks like OP is more

Yes, it looks like OP is more active and we'll see what happens with eJournal for D7. Would be nice to see a good integration of OP and OJS (http://pkp.sfu.ca/?q=ojs)... Not sure who may have attempted this yet - anyone knows?

Also, in looking at what OJS does it seems that those features can be developed in Drupal OpenPublish.
