HTML5 Stickers

Events happening in the community are now at Drupal community events on www.drupal.org.
jensimmons's picture

So yesterday at the HTML5 code sprint in NYC, several people expressed a desire to have stickers for DrupalCon (and beyond) to promote HTML5 in Drupal.

So I've done some research... If we order them immediately, it looks like we can get them printed at the same place that did the DrupalCon Chicago sitckers. Round 2.5 inch on white vinyl. Something printed on the back. With printing and paypal fees, it will come out to around $425 for 2,000.

I think we should go for it. If we can get 10 people to put in $40, we'll have it. Or 20 people at $20... We can split the stickers up among the people who chipped in, and use them to help promote HTML5 in the Drupal community. Or Drupal in the HTML5 community. Or whatever :)

I don't have the ability to put the chip on this website, so I'll put it on my website. And I'll post a design soon.

What do you think? We need to decide fast.

I got it. :) The stickers

jensimmons's picture

I got it. :)

The stickers will likely take about 6 weeks to get printed. I'm having them shipped to Chicago (instead of NYC), just in case we end up cutting it close to DrupalCon. So it will be a while before we can mail some to you — I expect I'll see them the first week of March. (And feel free to 'remind' me anytime!)

Do we want more?

jensimmons's picture

Wow, we are rocking this. Less than 24 hours, we've raised $265 so far. YAYAYAY!

This chip-in is based on 2,000 stickers. Do we want to go for 3,000? It's $180 more. Which would put the total required at $605. ???

I'm happy at 2,000. But 3,000 would also be really cool! Thoughts?

Great Stcker!

dcmouyard's picture

Definitely a worthy cause.

How many are registered for DrupalCon Chicago?

cliff's picture

Weren't there about 3,000 for DrupalCon San Francisco?

I'd say go for it. I'll have to wait a bit to chip in, but I'd be happy to do it.

For reference...

jensimmons's picture

DrupalCon Chicago ordered 4,000 total, in two batches of 2,000. They were very slow to hand them out. I remember wanting a stack to bring back to New York from DrupalCon Copenhagen, but I only got one sticker. And they ran out a while ago.

You mean DrupalCon SF ordered 4K?

cliff's picture

Right?

DrupalCon Chicago ordered

jensimmons's picture

I mean the people planning for DrupalCon Chicago ordered 4,000 stickers total to advertise DrupalCon Chicago. (And gave some out at DrupalCon Copenhagen. I don't remember if they had them at DrupalCon San Fran as well or not.)

DrupalCon San Francisco had 3,000 people attend. And each North American DrupalCon has doubled the size of the NA DrupalCon before it. San Fran was twice the size of D.C. (1,500 people). D.C was twice the size of Boston (800 people). Who knows if that will happen again, but DrupalCon Chicago is expected to be between 4,000-6,000 people.

While these stickers are for DrupalCon Chicago, they are also for afterwards. We can split them up and take them to local meetup groups, DrupalCamps, and other tech events throughout the next year or two. We can even give them to HTML5 fans who haven't heard of Drupal yet!

The question is, do we want to stick with 2,000 stickers? Or bump it to 3,000? (WOW!)

I'd like to see these flow

I think these will still be useful after DrupalCon Chicago. Getting HTML5 in D8 core will take time.

Let's go for 3,000!

jensimmons's picture

I just increased the Chip to $618, so we can order 3,000 stickers.

Having raised almost $400 in one day, from 18 people (YAYAYA!) I think we can get another $238.

This is what the $618 is for:
stickers: $552
shipping: $37
paypal fees: $29

:P Yeah, the backs are the

:P

Yeah, the backs are the same on the last three — but earlier, where I said I tweaked the back (g.d.o we need numbers on comments!) I made the HTML5 logo lighter, with more contrast, and made the Druplicon logo a bit smaller. Tiny changes — to even those two logos out & make them more like each other. Also, to compensate for the density of the ink.

Ah, print design, where you obsessively tweak for hours. The adjustments work (because it's a piece of paper). And once you are done, you are stuck with your mistakes forever....

I saw "options for the back"

laura s's picture

I saw "options for the back" so that's where I looked. My bad. Personally I like the fuller saturation without the gradient in the blue, the top of the 2 different versions in the last comment above. Stickers can look washed out sometimes. But it's hard to tell from jpgs. Either way, I'm looking forward to them!

If you need a vote...

Based on what I see on my monitor, I'd go with the first one in the "Stopping now, really" comment.

But the other one in that comment is really close, so I suspect either one would be just fine.

Based on the grand I just spent on this monitor

johnvsc's picture

def number 2 - the colour tones are just beautiful
however, well, you know - that has to do with Physics -> when the print become reality -> i mean, did anyone really understand what went on in Chemistry? Moles, anyone

Thanks Jen for making this happen and I added $40 to the pot !

Not only did I understand Chemistry...

cliff's picture

I taught it. And often I grew frustrated at having to have to deal with educational materials that focused too much on the mechanics of a model and too little on the reality that model was part of our attempt to understand.

But I digress.

I hope these stickers can be a token of community, binding each of us to our common goal.

Stop me before I get too sappy. (Too late, perhaps!)

Jen, how many are we getting? If you're willing to mail some out to folks who won't make DrupalCon, should we shoot for 6K? I really would like to have a bunch on hand for local meetups and other events this year.

Impressive Logo and Outstanding Efforts

devildogmrk's picture

I have to say that I am truly impressed how fast this has come together and how quickly we have been able to come up with the funds to get this done. We have even raised the ante to boot.

I have chipped in so that you can send me at least 100 of these stickers so I can promote both HTML5 content in Drupal and DrupalCon Chicago itself.

If this project is any indication of how popular HTML5 content or DrupalCon is going to be then we might be looking at record numbers for both.

I was surprised to see we were only $28 away from meeting the goal, so I just covered the remaining amount. $618 success! Will be sending you my address; thinkin' about passin' these out at our cali drupal group ;)

I prefer the darker blues, but all of the designs work great!

Thanks again Jen!

Distribution

jensimmons's picture

I've received emails from five of you about sending you some directly, since you won't be at DrupalCon. I'll email you back in the next couple days so you know you are on my list. If you would also like some sent to you, contact me http://jensimmons.com/contact with your address.

The stickers will take 6 weeks to print, so they should be done right before DrupalCon. I've had them shipped directly to Palantir's offices in Chicago just in case we are cutting it close (I don't want them sitting in NYC while we are in Chicago!). I know six weeks is a long time to wait. I want mine right now, so I can give some away at the Southwest Drupal Summit in Houston this week.... but alas, the best-printing-quality cheap-deal is not very fast.

I figure we'll open the box of stickers in Chicago, and give people on this list stacks of around 80-100 to pass around as you please, and take home to give away through out the year. (There's nothing about this sticker that says DrupalCon — on purpose!). I'll bring the rest home to New York to send out to the other people who donated, and keep a stash for future code sprints, etc. We can totally modify this plan as needed, of course... to spread around the love!

jensimmons's picture

You can still drop money into the chip-in. Shipping was a bit more than expected (3,000 stickers are heavy), and we are going to be shipping small batches all over the place.

Perhaps in May or so, if we've gone through the first 3,000 stickers quickly, we'll order another round. But let's see how long these last before raising much more.

Just dropped $20 into ChipIn.

Wow, our stickers have been printed already! I was warned they might take 6 weeks, but it looks like it's less than 2. They will arrive in Chicago next Wednesday or so (I had them shipped to my office there, instead of my home in NYC). Someone at Palantir will ship 300 to me, and I'll have those to hand out to New Yorkers and to mail (a few at a time) to the people who've asked me to mail them some. We'll distribute the rest at and after DrupalCon...
