I've been a PC for a long time. Now I want to try Mac, but I want to start cheap. If you want to upgrade, or you have an extra Mac sitting around, please contact me. It must be an Intel-based Mac running Mac OS X Snow Leopard version 10.6.4 or later. I'm hoping to spend less than $500. Is that enough to buy a usable laptop??

$500 is about right
$500 is about right. I sold 2 MacBook Pro laptops to friends in the Drupal community last year and the 15" 2.33GHz Core 2 Duo went for $500. It was in good working condition but the case had cosmetic scratches there was a dent in the top case.
With the depreciation since then, you should be able to find something in even better condition for $500. Don't worry about it running the latest Snow Leopard. You can probably get an older laptop, borrow an install DVD and update the software yourself.
I have one Macbook Pro
I believe it's the same model - Macbook Pro It's a 2.16 Intel Core 2 15 inch widescreen and is backlit - I like that part. It's just too slow for me., it's not scratched at all but it is slow. I have Snow Leopard on it. It is in its original box (I upgraded to a new faster MacBook Pro also 15 inch) 2011.
