When will the openScholar new version with Drupal 7 be released?

Events happening in the community are now at Drupal community events on www.drupal.org.

Hi All,

Ferdi told me this openScholar program at drupal meeting last year at Harvard, thank you very much Ferdi, we are excited with this openScholar program. We are building our new website with openScholar now. We wish to find out the information about the above question. I have searched the whole Web and attended all seminars given by the great openScholar team, but no information about this question found. Now we are wondering that if we should finish our new website with the current openScholar version or wait for the openScholar new version with Drupal 7 be released.

If we can make openScholar work with Drupal 7, we will update you here. Thanks for any advice.

Helen

Openscholar is not ready for

rbrandon's picture

Openscholar is not ready for D7 currently. Because of the number of modules involved and testing that will need to take place we probably will not upgrade till the end of the year at the earliest (although Ferdi may have other ideas there). We are in the process of upgrading some of our core Drupal 6 modules now that will move us one step closer to D7.

Even though a large percentage of the modules that Openscholar relies on are now available in D7 the porting process will still requires significant code changes that could not take place till those modules were/are released in a stable state. The OpenScholar Drupal 6 modules will continue to be under active development.

Thanks,
Richard Brandon

Upgrade to Drupal core version 6.20

rolando.isidoro's picture

Hi rbrandon,

how about an upgrade to Drupal core version 6.20? It's been almost 3 months since its release, is there any reason why this upgrade didn't made it on the latest OpenScholar release back in February?

From what it reads in the oficial 2.0-beta10 download page, "Major components for the next release remain unchanged.", does this mean that even the 6.20 core upgrade won't be performed in the upcoming release?

Thanks in advance,
Rolando

That's because OpenScholar is

hadi farnoud's picture

That's because OpenScholar is somehow abandoned. Developers of OpenScholar don't have enough time to develop/update it as much as they did in the past.

That's absolutely not true.

That's absolutely not true. They don't do most of their development on d.o. But there is an entire team dedicated to it and they are still working on it daily.

OpenScholar an education Facebook

niccolox's picture

I tend to agree with red here, its hard to get visibility into the project, but my impression is its ongoing, indeed they seem to be rolling-out more and more OS based websites and starting to get the critical-mass/network effect positive feedback effect

D7 has loads of gee-wizz goodness, but D6 is relatively stable

if you are running a platform, you want something stable and feature complete... D6 will do...

Harvard scholars and projects are starting to fill-out profiles and the social networking effect is starting aka Facebook

http://scholar.harvard.edu/websites
http://projects.iq.harvard.edu/websites

some nice activity streams forming activity rivers
http://scholar.harvard.edu/publications

considering the resources Harvard has, and perhaps they wish to create their own Facebook for Education...

I'd say its a safe bet for education... Acquia and Harvard within Drupal world are a good bet

although, Development Seed seem to be moving away from Drupal, focussing on Node.js... divested Managing News and Open Atrium

Glad to hear that. from

Glad to hear that. from outside, it seems like it. Maybe more active community and more visible teamwork can benefit both users and OS developers

This is something Ferdi,

redndahead's picture

This is something Ferdi, Kevin O'Brien and I discussed. It's a difficult thing to figure out where to do the contributions. Since OpenScholar has a lot of 3rd party modules it's difficult to host it on D.O. at the moment. We didn't discuss this, but maybe a separate community site like Ubercart has may be in order.

@Hadi Farnoud , I'm not

ferdi's picture

@Hadi Farnoud ,
I'm not really sure how did you come up with that conclusion but it is misleading. OpenScholar project is more active than it has ever been. Two new full time developers joined the team in the last two months. We had a new release less than two weeks ago (http://openscholar.harvard.edu/download). I just came back from drupalcon where I talked about OpenScholar in the "Destribution deli" session. We are everywhere active (http://sourceforge.net/projects/scholar/develop, http://sourceforge.net/project/stats/detail.php?group_id=261509&ugn=scho..., http://drupal.org/project/openscholar_vsite, https://github.com/organizations/openscholar).

We have been constantly trying to find better ways to communicate with the members of the drupal community but I agree that a lot more needs to be done. It's a work in progress and we certainly appreciate any help or suggestions.

rolando.isidoro, I thought

ferdi's picture

rolando.isidoro, I thought we did. It looks like I have upgraded trunk only (http://scholar.svn.sourceforge.net/viewvc/scholar/trunk/) . The latest version was built from a different branch. Sorry about that. It will be definitely in the next release.

thanks,
Ferdi

Upgrade to Drupal core 6.22

rolando.isidoro's picture

ferdi,

is it safe to perform an upgrade to Drupal core 6.22 via drush on an OpenScholar setup? Since version 6.21 was a Security update I think it's critical to perform this upgrade on the next OpenScholar release.

Thanks in advance,
Rolando

or more importantly, is it

My 2c

One nice thing of sticking with Drupal 6 for awhile is we know it's stable. I've read recently that upgrading to Drupal 7 isn't necessarily the best idea for all sites.

I am curious on how progress is going for the next release. How's the work updating to Spaces 3 going?

Thanks!

yes

hadi farnoud's picture

I saw Vsite for spaces 3 on Github. not sure if ferdi updated drupal too. you see that's the problem. there are everywhere and that's not necessarily a good thing. I don't know where is the latest version. I like to try latest dev version straight out of repository (SVN/GIT). which one is the main repository? I don't know

btw, the update of spaces 3 is very small and not complete version (I guess) you probably need to have vsite (which you have by default) and copy this over

looks like Github became the

looks like Github became the main code repository for OpenScholar. looks like other repositories will be updated regularly in sync with the main one.

If you want the latest dev code, GitHub it is!

Open Scholar on D7

drupa11y's picture

Any news or progress on this?

shinmaikeru's picture

OpenScholar was the biggest factor in our choosing to go with Drupal, and we now have two D7 installations and are about to do OpenScholar. Any ETA on a D7 version?

We have started to work on

ferdi's picture

We have started to work on D7. It will probably take a while though. The plan is to have a stable release (upgrade our installations) sometime in Sep - Oct 2012.
thanks !

D7 - where can I see the progress update on D7 of Open Scholar

I found it

You can see our progress

mpetrovic's picture

You can see our progress without pulling by looking at the repo on github and taking a peek at our issue queue. We're very close to being done, just wrapping up some migration issues. I can't say when it'll be done though.
