Upcoming Agenda & Speakers for Central CT Drupal Meetup

Events happening in the community are now at Drupal community events on www.drupal.org.

We had a nice showing, a great presentation and a lively discussion at our February meetup and some suggestions for future meetups.

We're going to introduce two or more short components to our meetup format on a regular basis so that more people can get involved in contributing to the meetup in a not too difficult way:

  • Each month, we will look for a volunteer to give a short presentation on a Drupal module which they select.
  • Each month, we will look for a volunteer to select some website that has been created with Drupal and then lead a discussion on how some of its features may have been implemented.

We are set with volunteers for this coming month. Perhaps, we can also add a theming tip and a beginner's tip each month.

The following topics were requested for presentations for future meetups:

  • Git
  • Organic Groups
  • Eclipse

Please let me know if you would be interested in presenting on one of these topics.

Our next meetup will be held on Tuesday, March 15th.

Thanks,

Mark

March Meetup

sclapp's picture

Agreed - another great meetup! I learned a lot, as always. I hope to actually help some other folks soon, but at least now I'm absorbing a lot.

It dawned on me that I could do a little preso next meeting on what I learned in Chicago. It turns out I will be going to the big DrupalCon out there March 7-11. (I swore I wasn't going to spend my $ on another conference, BUT... then I saw that the Open Government package will be revealed there & that there will be some library-specific sessions, as well... and ultimately, I learn faster from talking with people than trying to pick things up on my own by reading, so...)

Is there anything specific that people would want me to try & keep an ear out for while I'm there?

Bring Back From Chicago

Perhaps you can keep your eyes and ears open for info, direction, and trends for Drupal Gardens, Acquia, and other services in this genre. As a consultant building Drupal sites, I'm always looking for better and faster ways to get more cost-effective and efficient building real business solutions instead of having to focus on managing hardware, software upgrades, command-line work, etc.
Thank you....

DrupalCon Chicago wrapup

sclapp's picture

oh, I forgot to add in to my wrapup, but yes, I'd heard Drupal Gardens was extremely successful, so they'll be continuing the service - more of the same. More usability design work being done. A lot of Drupal "distributions" were talked about to meet specific use cases. Those are great ways to get "easy wins", because all of the module selection, configuration, and user experience design work was done for them. Yet you can still add in Drupal modules like you would with any other Drupal site. There was a session on "distribution deli" to talk about the offerings. Phase II Tech also revealed their "Open Public" distro for governmental agencies (heavy use of features, as with OpenAtrium, which they also created). Has a base theme for federal and one for state level govt. But they expect users will heavily customize/add to this. Additionally, there were sessions on how to get paid for your work, what to charge, etc., though mostly I didn't go to those.

They're all up on archive.org now - search for DrupalCon Chicago.
Also, my wrapup is a public Google document at https://docs.google.com/present/view?id=dc8bvscx_87fjbckndk & I'd blogged about a few things at my Library Webhead blog. I hope all of this helps. Sorry we missed you last night - Mark did a great job pulling it altogether & intro'ing new Drupal users to XAMPP.

Love to hear about Drupal

Love to hear about Drupal 8

Hey Phil ever think about using Aegir?

http://groups.drupal.org/aegir-hosting-system

bobmct's picture

Certainly there are numerous forums available and Drupal.org covers lots of issues. However, for the most part the responses are in a way, 'generic'. I am not familiar with the rules and regs of this platform but is anyone in the CT group interested in a more technical drupal Q&A list? Should we post Q's here and hopefully receive valuable responses?
What are others' thoughts on this?

Give it a try

havensp's picture

@bobmct - I'm with Tom on this.... Give it a try and if things get out of hand, then we can scale back.... The more active the forum, the more interest it will generate, the more good ideas we all get to hear about.

Personally I say go for it.

Personally I say go for it. Who knows maybe it will get a little more active around here, although you may get better/more results from Drupal.org

basic update.php access question/review?

bobmct's picture

G'morning all,

We run multiple but separate drupal instances here and I'm in the process of merging them. But first, upgrades are in order. Today I upgraded my version 6.15 to 6.20 quite successfully. But regarding our main site using version 5.18, I first needed to upgrade all the modules/themes prior to migrating to 6.20. Having created a new database and successfully loaded from the old to the new, I'm at the point where I need to run update.php to apply the upgrades to the db. OK -easy as I've done it numerous times before.

But, I CANNOT get by the "access denied" message. Here's what I've checked/done so far:
- I AM logged in as user #1
- I've placed both the $update_free_access =TRUE and $access_check = FALSE statements in my active settings.php file

At this point I'm kind of at a loss. Anyone other users here run into this and if so what did you do to overcome? I will post my resolution if/when I find one but hopefully that insight will come from this list.

Thanks - Bob

Bob, FYI, you have the

Bob,

FYI, you have the ability to create a new discussion within the Connecticut group. Click on "Create Discussion" in the box in the top right corner. That would allow you to create a posting with a meaningful title, and visitors to the Connecticut group would see that title on the discussion list on the Connecticut page. Your posting will also be emailed to everyone who subscribes to Connecticut group postings.

As to your question on where to post... A benefit to posting in the Connecticut group would be to find local Drupal expertise which might lead to future in-person acquaintances. A disadvantage to posting in the Connecticut group would be the lower volume of participation in comparison to other groups or the Drupal support mailing list.

basic update.php access question/review? CIRCUMVENTED!

bobmct's picture

Well, keeping this response within this thread (future discussions will be separate) I did manage to get around the update.php restriction. We use LDAP for authentication so our drupal #1 user is NOT a real user and not defined in our LDAP directory. But I tried to logon using it anyway and was of course denied access. Next I logged in as myself as I am an administrator. Once logged in I could move my cursor up to the admin menu, right hand side, over my login name and a drop down list of recent logins appeared. As our #1 user was attempted (but denied) I click on it and suddenly was logged in as that user bypassing normal authentication. This allowed me to run the update.php as needed and resolve my issue.

As I've stated before - there's GOT to be a better way.

Now the major task is merging the drupal 5.18 site with the running 6.20 site in a multi-site configuration. Perhaps we can talk about it for a while next week.

I am looking for volunteers to present on the following topics at next week's Tuesday, March 15th Central CT Drupal Meetup:

  • Drupal Theme Presentation of the Month:
A brief (10 minute presentation) on a favorite theme and its features. Basically, show us a theme and tell us why you like it.

  • Introduction to Drush: Drupal Command Line Shell and Scripting Interface:
Present and give a demo on the use of Drush for effective Drupal Site building and administration.

  • Introduction to Git: A Fast Version Control System:
Present and give a demo on the use of Git as an effective version control system for Drupal.

At our upcoming Meetup, we are adding to our format three short 10 minute presentations: Website, Module and Theme of the Month as a way to get more people involved in contributing to the Meeting in a less demanding way.

We'll also have a longer presentation and discussion on either Drush or Git as listed above.

Need A Replacement for Me

havensp's picture

Sorry folks, but I won't be making it to the Tuesday 3/15 meetup. I was scheduled to be prepared to facilitate one of the three new short presentations, specifically the one on a Drupal website. The plan is to select a site built with Drupal and then discuss 2-3 questions about how some aspect(s) of the site is put together (what module or combination of modules, what theme elements perhaps). Sooooo, can someone else please take a shot at this? Pretty easy, you are just asking the questions while others participate and share answers. Thx.

I'll take a shot at it...

mwetmore's picture

I'll jump in and put something together, did you start to put some kind of list together yet that I could work from?

Some of the interesting ones I'm looking at...

grammy.com
whitehouse.gov
marthastewart.com

Maybe we can pull some off of drupalsites.net to take a look at...

As you may recall, Phil

drmarkafriedman's picture

As you may recall, Phil motivated this new idea at the last meetup when he said he ran across a website built with Drupal and wondered how they might have built some of it's features.

I suggested to Phil that he pick a website built with Drupal and come up with two or three questions he might have about the website (in the context of its implementation with Drupal) and post the website he picked and the questions he generated so others could give the answers to his questions some thought before our meetup. You might want to do the same with a website(s) you pick for discussion on Tuesday.

Thanks.
