There was talk at DrupalCon Chicago about incorporating some Drupal community activities into our user groups meetings, specifically the review of applications to create full projects. This is a great chance to learn, to perform a valuable service for the Drupal community, and to participate in the community in a more integral way. I'm collecting some of the relevant links in this post, looking to gauge people's level of interest, and making sure this is on the radar for the Aprll 13 user group.
Review applications for full projects

Contributing to Drupal.org documentation
As someone who would be far more comfortable working in documentation, I thought it would be ideal to present a brief introduction to working with documentation on Drupal.org as well. That way, when we dive into the hands-on portion, there will be something for everyone.

Great Idea
Hi,
Thank you for starting this group.
I am definitely interesting in helping.
I've reviewed several full project applications (modules). I prefer to review applications that have been waiting the longest. Thus, an easy way to determine how long an applications have been pending would be great :)
Also FYI there is a Code Review group here http://groups.drupal.org/code-review and a Peer Review group here http://groups.drupal.org/peer-review .

Applicant Point of View
I have had a Project Application in the process since February 26, 2011 and I'm not complaining here. It's just that the emphasis is on contributing and now we even have sandboxes yet there seems to be no real system. I realize that it depends on volunteers and I even studied up on the process and did a review. That review just sits there I guess until someone with the right permissions happens to look at it.
I would like to review more, but only feel qualified to deal with D 7 projects. The problem is that you have no way to find out what version the project is for without going to the project and looking at the .info file in the repository viewer.
It's a shame to see so many applications where the author of the project didn't even read http://drupal.org/node/1011698. Many come there with no link to their sandbox project. Some don't even have the first commit. The problem is that those that have done their homework seem to have no way to stand out among all the unready.
I have looked at most of the projects in the PA issues queue and since a level of frustration among many concerning when their project will get reviewed. Do we need something to organize the volunteer effort? How can people in the queue help each other. I have fantasized a buddy system where we would be paired off and review each other. I learned a lot reading the documents on the review project and even went back and edited mine after things learned there.
When you go to the issues page for Project Applications at http://drupal.org/project/projectapplications you see there are supposed to be 175 issues. This number is incorrect and has been for days. The actual number that link brings you to is 207.
Anyway thanks for starting this topic which is timely for me and 206 others right now. :)
awesome!

That will be awesome!
Glad to hear that you're in town, and that you'll be coming to the meetup.
If you want to help run this, that would be great.
Cheers,
Bill

Full presentation will be in May
Quick update: We'll be talking about this at the April meeting, but it will be the May 11 User group meeting where we fully engage. Bill Fitzgerald from FunnyMonkey will be facilitating.
As an event
Hey, can someone post this as an actual event type? I want to maybe do a little promoting with my blog. But I also don't want to steal the show.

Done. I was hoping for a write up from you, too! http://groups.drupal.org/node/144359
The show is there to be stolen!
Seriously, promote away - you've been talking about things like this for a long time.
I'm going to try and get a post together this weekend as well, but anything you want to do to publicize/help shape this event is welcome.
Cheers,
Bill
