Drupal 7 provides the possibility to download and install modules directly from the web interface, which potentially can improve the user experience for installing new modules considerably. The objective of this GSoC proposal is to create an app-store style interface that either (1) replaces the "install new module" page, or (2) is used to populate the URL field in the "install new module" page.
This project would include:
- Investigating some different app-store style interfaces, and determine which elements are suitable for Drupal module browsing.
- Investigating which module data are desired in the app store interface.
- Investigating which module data can be fetched from drupal.org.
- Creating a module that displays an app-store style inteface when clicking "install new module" at the Drupal 7 module list.
- Publishing this module on drupal.org.
I (Itangalo) am prepared to mentor this project, but would gladly have a co-mentor.
Ankit Babbar has shown interest in carrying out this project.

Thank you wildkatana and yoroy for the links! I was totally unaware of this -- but now it is obvious that I should have looked around more (and talked to Bojhan).
There is definately a lot of functionality overlap, and from what I've seen so far it seems that you have gotten a very good start.

I'm currently working on the Update manager+ and I had problems with getting a list from all available projects on drupal.org. I think that drupal.org should provide a list of all projects including project name, short project name, description, image and url to the latest release of the project.
It would be very cool when every project on drupal.org could has a logo!
