I've been admin for a couple Drupal sites for 6 years but I'm thinking of taking the plunge on a distribution. How likely is OpenPublish to be released in 7 this year. How complex will the upgrade path be?
I've downloaded an installed openpublish package and fiddled with the interface. It adds a lot great features--way more than i currently need and that raises the concern about upgrade paths. I see that a Drupal 7 release date has not been set and that in any event the upgrade path may not be too simple. The site i'm considering it for is still in 5.x and i have been stalling on the upgrade hoping to do a double upgrade from 5 to 6 to 7.
I have about 5000 nodes of content 3 themes and 10 users.

You shoukd wait.
Well, let me, try an answer...
Currently running www.moriasnow.gr with O.P.
With my experience (i'm not a php developer, though i can basicaly edit a php file here and there - simple modifications) i should wait for a drupal 7 release, even if this is months to come stable.
The reason is that i have never used all openpublish features (mainly because i had internationalization issues ... with apture, more like this e.t.c. ) and because complexity.
The result was that my site now is a basic drupal install with all "article" features from o.p. and a lot of modifications in views... and in theme level. In this stage i can not even upgrade if there was a 6 version with the modifications i have made...
I am thinking of upgrading to drupal 7 (Not OP. diustribution just a simple drupal seven), but this is quite difficult with all these (feature) modules involved. I tried this in a local install, and i had only title nodes... I gave up for the moment.
Also as far as i know ugrading to the next release will not be supported...
Anyway, i love O.P. but i think drupal 6 O.P. version was too heavy and also to diffficult to learn.
I think that the time spended so far for modifications to my O.P. distribution was far away from the time i should spend for a clean drupal 7 (not distribution) edition to have the same results. But at the time i was developing my site, drupal seven was in the developing proccess.
My advice is to wait.
I really do not know how you should upgrade your 5.x sites. I think this is not a painless proccess but surely doable !
Thanks !
good answer
I've been playing with Open Publish (on 6), Open Public (on 7) and Vanilla Drupal 7 and I'm thinking that unless i hear back from Phase 2 (which have been ignoring my email and phone inquiries) I will choose the better supported route and just install the modules I definitely need--basically copying the features i like.
Re; Open Publish The calais semantic web seems like overkill but i do want the "topic hub" functionality. I have panels in 5.x and will likely install context. Anyone know of documentation which describes which modules are key to topic hub? We have no problem working out our own tagging/taxonomy set-up but don't want to actually enter node ids to determine what's related but some sort of overlap between the content type and the tag.
I'll post a new topic
Announcement Expected This Week
Hi,
I recommend tuning in here:

There's an OpenPublish 3.0 announcement expected this week. And I have word that an alpha version has been in testing with some larger Phase 2 clients. I've not verified that, but it came from a previous Phase 2 employee.

This is good news and bad
This is good news and bad news. Sounds like they've taken some time to evaluate the distribution, but for those of us who have built off of the 2.x distribution, looks like we're stuck :(
