Lafayette meetup?

Events happening in the community are now at Drupal community events on www.drupal.org.

I know that there are several of us who live in Lafayette or West Lafayette and work with Drupal. Would any of you be interested in starting a Lafayette meetup? I think that we could probably meet at my church if we need a decent size room. Let me know what you think.

How about in 2 or 3 weeks on the Purdue Campus?

I was up until 2am this morning yacking with McNeelyCorp [aka Elvis] about this very topic.
He has a professor who is wanting a local Drupal scene and Elvis is willing to do the heavy lifting. He's asked me to join him for the 1st few meetings.
I'll send you an email with more details.
I don't know if my co-worker Sean aka lominicar would want to hook up with that as well; he's in Lafayette, but not West.
We'll see what happens here!

Mike,

Hello! We tried to hook up before Christmas, but it never happened. I'd love to get a Lafayette group started...

Guess what? I just changed my nick for the 3rd time! (I promise this is the last time...) Before my current name, I was known as "ecclesiastic" -- this didn't stick around because the wife couldn't bare to be married to someone who had picked such a geeky nick.

a rose by any other name

Josh...
I'll give you some free unsolicited advise...
don't use "jawshoeuh"
I heard a podcast YEARS AGO that encouraged me to brand myself as a simple name that anyone could use to recognize me in any forum, chat, post, site, etc.

i see the phonetic trickery in that name, but not everyone will. If you have to explain your nick, its too hard. you want ppl to have easy access to you in any setting and that begins with a nick that is palatable to the ears AND brain :-)
just my thoughts.... take it or leave it

Hi Mike, The day is finally

elvis2's picture

Hi All

The day is finally coming to where we have a Drupal group here. Here is what I know so far. A very good chance the group will meet on Thursdays at 4pm on campus. I am shooting for the first meetup to be on Feb. 26th. David Blakesley and his staff plan (whom use Drupal in the English Department) to attend. I have invited StormFront and the webmaster at the Tippecanoe Public Library as well. I plan to reach out to the Computer Science professors who are into OpenSource.

If you know some other companies / groups who might be interested please let me know. Since the English department is already using Drupal I think it might influence others around town to take a hard look at Drupal.

Any planning help / support (for food and drinks) would be appreciated. Do you know of any companies / departments who can lift a hand with a sponsorship? Even if small, it will help.

Regards

time?

mikegoodwin's picture

Elvis,

I may be the exception, but I will very rarely be able to make it to a meeting before 5:00pm on a weekday. If we want Drupal "professionals", then 4pm is probably an acceptable time. However, for people who do it in their spare time (as I do), this time will simply not work. Have you thought about having it later in the evening? I guess that different demographics would probably attend at different times.

+1 on 4pm being a VERY difficult time for even "Professional" drupalers... I'm a full time web developer and see the community aspect of Drupal as an "after hours" kind of time.

We're not all students around here in lafayette ;-)

I know a couple of people who may be interested in coming...You may contact Ric Brown, the owner of Local Mountain Coffee. He has discussed meeting up with me in the past about Drupal. Also, the people at Haan Marketing and Communications seem interested in Drupal as well.

Josh,

It seemed like Bob and Earl might be interested as well. I'm meeting them for lunch on Tuesday to talk about some Drupal stuff (at least that's what I think we're talking about).

Thanks for sharing the schedule concerns. I am waiting to hear back from David about this. What I would like to propose is a 4pm - 5pm power hour for the English department folks, where the group would really focus on them. Then have the others meet at 5 or 5:30 to 7:30. At 5-5:30 have food and talk / mingle (is that word still mean the same as 10 years ago :)). 6 - 7:30 get to the order of business.

What are your thoughts on that? Is two 1.5 hours enough time for the rest of us? Be frank / realistic DougVann, since you have done this a few times :)

Hey Josh and Josh, Will
