One thing I've noticed is that the DrupalCons in North America have been on the other side of the country, and considering that I'd like to attend, I was wondering if anybody had considered trying to host one here in Portland. Granted, it would be slightly bigger than the Drupal Camp already being worked on (just slightly), but I think it would be great if we brought one here.
There is a g.d.o. group just for conference management, and there are two posts of interest there: one on DrupalCon deadlines, and one on Drupalcon proposal guidelines. Assuming the deadlines are still the same, that would be mean we would have until this Sunday to submit an intention to submit a DrupalCon North America 2010 proposal, and then until March 1st to actually submit the proposal. Not a lot of time, I know (too bad I didn't think of this sooner), but I'd be willing to bet that the intention to submit a proposal wouldn't bee too complicated.
Let me know what you think.

Absolutely we should!
Portland would be the perfect place to hold a drupalcon, great transit, great hotels, etc., and it's not cost prohibitive for a lot of people as far as hotels etc! There is a reason that OSCON has been here so long. Did you have any ideas about event companies, venues etc.?
I'm not sure how many
I'm not sure how many attendees there will be, but DrupalCon in PDX may have to be hosted in a Hotel. Portland's convention center is plenty big enough, but there may be a problem because they have no on-site hotels to speak of and traveling cons often want that. There is decent public transport, so they might not be too concerned, but there are conferences that will not come to Portland for just that reason. Either way, these are the kinds of questions we may have to answer. Certainly it would probably be best as an organized effort.

What a good idea!
I'm involved with helping to plan OpenSourceBridge, and I'll bring this up at Beer and Blog this afternoon. I think we could reasonably put an intention to submit for 2010 out very quickly.

Intent to Submit
What does an intent to submit entail? I would totally be willing to spend some time on this tomorrow afternoon/evening. - Sarah P
Convention Center and Planning
I think the convention center would still be an excellent place to have the con. There are hotels close by, and the max line is easy enough to use. It would take some organization, but at this level we should at least get it going. I would be willing to call event companies, or whatever else we needed to get the proposal together before March 1st.
Intent to submit deadline is Sunday
Intent to submit a proposal is due February 15, i.e. this Sunday.
Total Proposal
The total proposal though isn't due until the March 1st...if the total proposal were due on Sunday I would say pass...but the intent to submit could be done by then...I think...it's at least worth looking into. :)
What an Intent to Submit Is
Out of curiosity I asked jredding what goes into an intent to submit. Turns out it's just "I intend to submit a proposal for Portland, Or" or wherever. Pretty simple. However, while I wouldn't mind doing the legwork for most of this. Any drupalcon is a community effort, and if you guys aren't into it than I would rather wait a year and see where we are. I'm not saying people would have to sign up to volunteer today, yay's and nay's on the idea is all I had in mind. :)
I'd be up for it
I'd be up for helping with DrupalCon planning and bid preparation.
Since the deadline is tomorrow...
Cool! Since the deadline for the intent to submit is tomorrow, I think I'm going to go ahead and do it. I won't have time later, and this is a rather small first step.
Go for it!
I'm also willing to help out.
It's Valentine's weekend,
It's Valentine's weekend, but I think many would be excited by this. I believe many of the usual "DUG and DrupalCamp" suspects will come out of the woodwork for sure.

I would be interested in
I would be interested in helping out with the conference.

I would shoot for 2011 and
I would shoot for 2011 and see how Open Source Bridge and DrupalCampPDX this year work out: that should be a good foundation for bidding for the North American DrupalCon 2011.
But, if you going to try for 2010, I, of course, be happy to help.
Should be done...
I sent an email to jredding with the intent to submit a proposal. Although it's tempting to wait for 2011, I think I would rather try for 2010 and see what happens. It at least doubles our chances by submitting both years, rather than just passing on this year. :)
Thursday Night Meeting?
If anyone would like to meet about the proposal for drupalcon 2010, I was thinking that Thursday night 6:30ish would work well for me. Somewhere like the UrbanGrind off of 14th and lovejoy might work well, close to the streetcar etc. :) Although I'm open to other options if people want to be involved in the proposal process but can't make it then, such as a virtual meeting or another night.
My plan is to do some research and phone calls on venues and such and write out some of what Mike and I've been talking about and then present it to the group in some fashion. Either in person or online, or both. I'm open to ideas, I just want to start asap as we only have two weeks to put this together. Let me know what you guys think. Know that there is no pressure to get involved at this point though, I am fully aware this is short notice, and I volunteered. :) Thanks!
I'd love to help but
I'd love to help but Thursday 4pm on are always out for me. I can make myself available during the day, evenings usually, Saturday this weekend.
Ignite Portland on Thursday
Thursday night is probably not the greatest, Ignite Portland at the Baghdad is that night.
Tuesday or Wednesday don't look as crowded, and add this to Calagator to let other folks know about this too.
Tuesday
I can go for Tuesday, I just have to keep it fairly short, Niit (my 9mos old) is still getting over her cold. So Tuesday 6:30pm-8pm at the Urban Grind...let me know if there objections. :)
Tonight (Feb 17) or next
Tonight (Feb 17) or next week? I'm available for either, or both.
Pearl or NE?
Pearl or NE?
NW (aka Pearl) :)
The meeting is tonight at the Urban Grind by 14th and Kearny in the Pearl. Let me know if you have more questions!
see you there!
I'll be at the Urban Grind tonight.
Resources
So after really digging into this today, looking at the scope of the conference, and the time we have available over the next year. We think we are going to have to pass on heading this up. We simply do not have the resources to pull this off on our own as organizers at this point.
Thanks to everyone who came last night, we look forward to working with you in the future, and apologize for not coming to this conclusion sooner.
I plan on un-submitting our intent to propose in a few days, unless someone else would like to take up the organizing task, in which case I would gladly pass on any numbers we have collected. :) Thanks everyone!
No worries, starting so near
No worries, starting so near the deadline made it a long shot anyway. Look at it this way, we've got a head start on 2011! (assuming O'Reilly hasn't taken over by then).
