$200
I'm wlling to kick in $200 toward this.
Thanks!
You can make a donation directly via paypal (see my project page at http://exodusdev.com/drupal/4.7/modules/classified.module for a paypal payment button)
Or, is it customary to involve a 3rd party like donorge.org (or something else...) ? In any case, I'm not sure how this all works... :D

"...customary to involve a 3rd party...?" I think it depends.
I think it all depends on what the donor feels most comfortable with as well as what the developer offers in terms of being able to receive payments.
For example, some donors might prefer the transparency of donorge.org and might not be willing to give via PayPal. However, some developers might prefer something quick and easy they're more familiar with when it comes to receiving payments such as via a PayPal button and/or link.
I've seen various donations made via donorge.org, but I believe I've seen more via PayPal. For example, I've made all my donations to the Drupal project, the CivicSpace OG enhancements, Rackathon 2006 (I'm not sure why my name hasn't been posted!), and a few other projects such as dww's New release system for Drupal contributions (also found here) all via PayPal.
In the end, Mike, whatever works best for you is what I'd recommend. The Drupal community expects honesty and fairness from everyone - developers, users, consultants, etc. - and I see nothing wrong with using PayPal. It's easy for someone like me to donate with and...it works!
Thank you for your contributions to Drupal. Please keep up the good work. And of course, good luck with your projects!

More thanks!
I appreciate the feedback. I've been dancing around the edges of this, trying to get started; this is the first feedback I've received on this subject, so I totally appreciate the info.
I'm fine with paypal. When donations roll in, I'll post an update on my web page, along with progress reports.
Any and all help is appreciated, of course!

Won't use Donorge.org
Several weeks ago, I decided to stop using donorge.org, for a variety of reasons (mainly my lack of understanding about how donorge.org works, how they disburse funds, and other reasons.) This is not a reflection on donorge.org.
I've asked the donorge.org site owner to refund all donations (2, totaling USD $35.00) made as of this date. (I'm waiting for a confirmation response from donorge.org.)
I advise anyone who has donated to this project via donorge.org request a timely refund, and, if they want to donate to this project, please use paypal directly (see http://exodusdev.com/drupal/4.7/modules/classified.module for more information.)
I apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused.

Suggestion
So, I read your rational on not using CCK. Makes sense. What I would suggest is that instead of having only one node type that is of type classified, make it so that you can make ANY node type classifieds-enabled. Then, you would ship the classifieds module with a "basic classified" node type that would automatically be classified enabled.
Look at how OG works to make this work. Then, those people that want / need advanced classifieds with more than just a text entry field can build whatever CCK craziness they need -- including image fields, file fields, etc.
I think this is a middle ground that would really work well....
And: good on you for doing the reverse bounty thing!
Thanks for the suggestion
I'll look into your suggestion. Sounds cool, I can already see how it could be done. It might have to wait until post 1.0, though...
Regarding the reverse bounty thing, I'm pretty excited - I'll let you all know how it goes.

Classified Ads module now available on Drupal.org
At long last... I've committed the module to Drupal CVS. It's available at:
http://drupal.org/project/ed_classified
(Drupal 4.7 version is available now; anyone care to take on a 5.0 port? If not, I'll have to tackle that one later...)

CONGRATS!
I won't be using it because it's a 4.7 module and I'm on 5.1, but I did want to say congrats on getting this module launched.
Keep up the good work.

Would appreciate a few pointers...
Hi Mike,
I setting up a website for the tenants association I am president of here is New York. Working with a developer who installed your module, but I'm supposed to configure and admin. He has had a death in his family and is now behind and and I'm having trouble taking the next step. Looked on your site, but don't see a "how to". Happy to contribute to your paypal account, would like to be able to launch this function when we go live on Thursday.
Thanks in advance!
Janet
