Just to let you know that I 'use' OpenPublish. Given that openpublish is more a collection of nifty modules with some configuration, it would be fair to say that I started out with OpenPublish and tweaked it to my needs.
However, for our journal we have some nifty features, some of which in dev:
- Standardized XML output (METS, MODS, DC and schema.org)
- Archive feature by using archive.org
- Mobile app using the XML export
- Blog
- Fully searchable archive
- Mobile theme
- 'automatic' new issue
Nothing out of the ordinary, yet to get it running it took a while to make it happen. We are now considering opening it up, so others can make use of it. In other words, to build a multisite with a pre-configured 'ready to go' magazine site. It would allow those less tech savvy people to build a journal and have a mobile app (iPhone, Android) with the sole requirement of adding content.
So I wonder, how come that this idea (of building a mother system) is not easy to find and why are we all building our own system? Surely, with magazines having more or less a generic content (I would think) this should not be all too difficult...

I completely agree with you. We are in the process of building out a City Magazine site in D7 and originally wanted to build it on OpenPublish;, however; the OP version for D7 was not yet ready. So we waited for OP for D7 for several months, and kept waiting and kept waiting and waiting. Finally they released the Alpha version, however, there didn't appear to be much there. So reluctantly, we just decided to build it from scratch using D7 and the Omega Theme Framework. Our hope is that once there is a stable release of OP for D7 we can migrate site to that, but not sure how difficult that will be. We have spent a ton of time searching for mods, distributions and themes for a City Magazine that would work for our needs, but have not really found much that made sense for us. I am curious to know if you guys are using the Alpha Version of OpenPublish. If you have any ideas of how we could collaborate and leverage resources, we would love to explore that possibility.

But, mine is worse. I am migrating Free Software Magazine from Drupal 5 (!) to Drupal 7. Mine was a highly personalised site, with tons of custom modules etc. I am doing a clean-cut; I wanted to use OpenPublish, but the more I work on it now, the more I think that the Omega framework was the way to go...
The magazine should be live after Dec 1st...

For much the same reasons, we ended up using D6. Indeed, back then D7 was just released, yet none of the modules we really needed was already having a stable for D7. Hence, D6 it is. Which is fine so far, for it does what we want it to. Given that we have a standardized XML, an export of the data ought not to be hard. However, testing it all on D7 would be.
In other words, we're using D6 and waiting to migrate to D7 once we got all the modules sorted.
We probably will be looking into migrating in say a years time, or build from scratch in a years time. Not sure, we'll have to sit down and decide whether we are going to do this on our own (again) or...
What we are planning now is to get a collection of magazines and with a small(ish) fee to run a multisite. We would get it up, running and maintained easily. Ought not to be expensive, not at all. So indeed, one wonders why this never has been done before.
