Hi All, What topic would you

elvis2's picture

Hi All,

What topic would you like to cover in the next meetup?

(1) Making a D6 Theme (will split into two sessions)
(2) Adding Ajax/Json to Drupal
(3) Sharing (and illustrating) useful tools we use in our daily work (this could be a group effort)

One last question... Pizza or Bagels? If bagels, what beverage(s)?

My vote . . .

david blakesley's picture

I would love to hear how people approach theming (1) and (3) tools. I'm interested in 2 as well, but it might be too advanced for me. I'm happy to learn, though.

I've done some theming myself, but I'm mostly just modifying other designs. I do have a specific task in mind also. I'm looking to improve upon the blocks used at my Parlor Press site (http://parlorpress.com). I'm not that happy with their shape, color, alignment (you name it).

Pizza or bagels is cool with me. Soda is easy, but I'll drink anything from water on up.

Connecting Laptops / Computers

joshmiller's picture

Connecting Laptops

With most Drupal Meetings, people are encouraged to bring their laptops. While that is awesome, the only way to connect to the internet using your own laptop at Purdue is to us the "Purdue Air Link" program and a purdue user id and password. We can find willing username and password sharers usually, but laptop owners need to install the software first.

Click the following to get started: http://www.itap.purdue.edu/airlink/index.cfm

Dave, is there any way you could get a "guest" account from Itap?

Josh

Guest Accounts

david blakesley's picture

I found out that I can request guest VPN accounts, but I will need (to david.blakesley@gmail.com) the following information (today, before 2 pm if you can) for anyone who wants one:

First Name
Last Name
Address, City, State, Zip
Phone

I can use the same information for subsequent meetings, so you will only need to provide this information once.

Thanks!
Dave

Hey Dave, Do you have a

elvis2's picture

Hey Dave,

Do you have a contact at iTap? Next meetup we need to be able to have access to some sort of server for demo-ing the drupal themes. Sure would be nice if iTap provided this. Might be a good opp to plug Drupal within iTap :)

locally?

mikegoodwin's picture

Can't you just run server software on your local machine (e.g. WAMP, MAMP, etc.)?

If we are in the lab I think

elvis2's picture

If we are in the lab I think you can just remove a network / internet cable from one of the machines. I was able to do that using the lead machine.

I'll be missing this one.

dougvann's picture

I'm getting plenty of Drupal at the www.cmsexpo.net in Evanston IL. My 3 hr Drupal Kickstart presentation went very well. I hadn't planned on this happening but I was asked to sing the Drupal Song right after my presenter interview. Here's the evidence: http://www.ustream.tv/recorded/1448530 LOL!

Elvis, I'm cooking up a Drupal HackFest for 5/16 at IUPUI. As soon as the building is procured, I'll post it. Give me a call if you want to talk about a HackFest in your area.

Have fun without me guys!

elvis2's picture

Wow Doug, you have a good voice. Unfortunately for me, the voice doesn't come with the name :)

Yeah, about the hackfest, I need to get a response from the guys here. Some of the guys weren't able to make it last night so I will need to make a thread for us to plan the hackfest.

How about "Getting connected

joshmiller's picture

How about "Getting connected within the Drupal Community: Finding Answers and Getting Answers"

We could also run a http://www.d7ux.org/ user testing scenario (see latest post)

D6 Themes are a good topic, but I think a community-oriented theme would help those who are new to Drupal get involved and its something that seasoned drupal users in the group can talk about a lot.

I'd even offer to present on getting connected in the IRC channel, what to do with the "issue" form, etc...

Absolutely, hands down has to be Pizza. I will even bring the pizza (more than the two boxes that was there before hand) if others will bring $5 as a cover charge. Also, since we are meeting at 5pm, it doesn't make sense to have bagels for dinner?

Josh

My selfish vote...

jessehouchins's picture

D6 theming (since I need to get better at this) and pizza (since I love pizza).

may or may not be there

mikegoodwin's picture

My extended family is having some pretty serious issues that have strained our schedule recently. I'll try to be there, but I can't be certain until the day of. I'm down with theming and pizza.

Sorry to hear about the

elvis2's picture

Sorry to hear about the family Mike. I hope things get better there.

I will concede my original

joshmiller's picture

I will concede my original request for community-oriented discussion for the themeing session that the others want.

I am also going to be bringing someone from Haan (Earl). So count my sign-up as 2. And for that, two more votes for themeing session.

Elvis -- I am willing to do the pizza pickup as long as you're cool with that idea. I would like to hear from you before April 9th.

Mike -- It would be good to see you there. I'm sure Jesse would like to talk to you, but totally understand the family issues. Family comes first.

If you are really up to

elvis2's picture

If you are really up to that, be my guest. I was going to have it delivered. Let me know one way or the other, I have some good coupons when ordering on Papa Johns website. :) Last time I put the order in the same day of the meetup...

I plan on attending

mfocosi's picture

Hello, I heard about this group through Mike Goodwin. I'm the webmaster for the Dept. of Physics @ Purdue. I'm interested in hearing about anything Drupal 6 related since I plan on migrating from 5 sometime. Also, I'd like to hear how other Purdue people have integrated Purdue Career Accounts with their Drupal sites.

Pizza sounds good to me.

Hi Mike,Nice to see another

elvis2's picture

Hi Mike,

Nice to see another user on campus coming tomorrow. The theming session tomorrow will prime us for making our own theme from scratch. Something I hope we can do at the next meeting (late this month).

Regarding the PCA & Drupal, I believe it is possible. I will let Dave answer that as he has more experience with on campus and Drupal.

Career Accounts/Drupal

david blakesley's picture

I'm glad you heard about us, Mike. Presently, we haven't integrated career accounts into the Drupal sites. It has worked fairly well to just let students and instructors create their own accounts. Theoretically, it's possible, but I think Purdue would have to make an administrative commitment to Drupal that they haven't yet. One thing that would get us going in that direction, though, would be the long-awaited (almost finished) Gradebook module (in Beta 2): http://drupal.org/project/gradebook

re: Career Accounts/Drupal

mfocosi's picture

Thanks. I've written a module that I use in Physics to authenticate with career accounts. I wanted to hear how other depts were doing it to compare notes and get ideas, etc. If you ever start using career accounts and have any questions feel free to contact me.

I'll be late . . .

david blakesley's picture

Just wanted everyone to know that it looks like I may not be able to get to the meetup until after 6:30. An event yesterday was canceled and moved to Thursday, and since I'm an "official," I have to be there. So have at it without me and I'll get there eventually one way or the other!

Dave

Hi All, unfortunately I am

elvis2's picture

Hi All, unfortunately I am going to have to cancel coming to the meetup. I woke up this morning feeling miserable with what seems to be the flu. You are free to still meet and have pizza (Josh, pizza has not been ordered yet) if you want. Otherwise we can pickup on April 30th, the next scheduled meetup.

Here are the topics I wanted to cover tonight:
- D6 theme system architecture
- theme inheritance and derivative themes
- customizing with CSS
- custom templates
- theme hooks
- organization of themes

The following meetup we will put the above into practice and learn the theme layer with themes and using theme hooks inside modules.

Please let me know what you all decide...

April 30th here we come . . .

david blakesley's picture

Hope you feel better soon, Elvis. I mentioned yesterday that I'll be (way) late to the meetup tonight, 6:30ish at the earliest, so maybe given the absence of our fearless leader Elvis we should instead shoot for April 30th. Since it's last minute, let me say then that if you're already on your way, go ahead and meet without us, but if you haven't left yet and get this note, don't come. We'll pick things up next time . . .

Dave

April 30th

I'll defer to the 30th too. Get well soon.

April 30th it is!

Hi All,I look forward to

elvis2's picture

Hi All,

I look forward to seeing you all tomorrow afternoon. I hope the theming session will start us on the right track to having more drupal training like sessions. Tomorrow I would also like to begin talks on picking a date for a hackfest. :) More details tomorrow.

Expect plenty of pizza, beverages, and lengthy conversation on Drupal 6 theming...

few minutes late

What Mike said . . .

david blakesley's picture

I'd go with what Mike suggested. ITaP wouldn't give us server space (we don't use their servers already because of various issues related to access). We do have our own VPS that could be used, but I like Mike's idea because I've been wanting to see that done also (if it's possible).
