Training Session for Quick and Easy Drupal local/remote development

Events happening in the community are now at Drupal community events on www.drupal.org.

Training (free or commercial)

Alas,

Many people have pinged, e-mailed, and verbally abused me (in a modest way) to give 'em some tips, tricks and trade secrets that I hesitantly share to anyone deemed unworthy of my attention hwahaha.

Well I wouldn't consider them secrets since the tools and techniques are just there laying around.

So in lieu to the demand, I'm giving a free training session on "Quick and Easy Drupal development". Whether you're a crazy bun, or just someone who loves to travel from one spot to another (like me!), we'll make sure that you get to do webdev magic real soon.

Quickie outline of the session/s

  • Create websites with minimal resources
    • Still stuck with your dial-up connection? Poor you. But don't worry... we got that handled! Will show you how things get done even with the thinnest of internet connectivity. Globe Visibility and SmartBro users are welcome. Those who have sucky internet connections are also free to join.
  • Remove your frustrations with Multi-Site server setup
    • What? Still can't figure out how to utilize Drupal's multi-site architecture? Still hung-up on Apache Virtual hosts? Man, you seriously need to attend. Will demonstrate how to easily achieve this feat in less than a minute. Create robust clone sites in minutes. We'll cover a little bit about web-hosting solutions and my take on the topic.
  • Become Theme-savy with Drupal Starter Themes
    • Oh nose. You don't know how to create a new theme? Well better learn some CSS and rookie php coding 'coz we'll try to bring out the themer inside of you. With the help of Starter themes of course.
  • Get rolling with Backup and File-management tools
    • Feeling queasy over web development and coding? Maybe web-site administration is for you! Learn how easy it is to back-up the database and files using !Tooot! and !toooooooo!. Better attend to find out.
    • MAC, Windows, Linux... WE DON'T CARE! It wouldn't be "quick n' easy" if it's not cross-platform silly.
  • WTF? (where's the fun?), Drupal-geeks only?
    • NO. NO. And NO. This session is open for Joomla peeps, Wordpress meeks even Plone greeks. We definitely want people to contradict our ways and teachings. RoR pals... keep your train where it belongs ---> the rail-road!
  • We demand our own topics!
    • There there. Who said Marc's going to do all the figuring out? It's time we put the spot-light on you! Share and discuss the topic that you really want to talk about, relevant or not. Just make sure you don't get thrown stones and tomatoes so choose your topic wisely!

Schedule:

Please note that the schedule will be based and decided upon the availability of the venue and the attending guests. Oh and don't bombard the organizers. Better sign-up to find out.

Venue:

The location of the event (although it is a bit pre-meditated atm) is going to be based on the preference of the attendees.

Wait... How much did you say?

Although the session is free, sponsorships are welcomed from companies who are seeking potential employees at the event. It wouldn't hurt to buy Pizza or bring a few bottles of soft-drinks. Feel good by making all of us feel good. Got it?

Can I talk? Please!?%

So you're a bit of a talker huh? We just don't know how much time we have yet but it's ideal to open the floor to those who wish to share their yummy thoughts with the crowd. What's more fun than information overload right?

But I'm a newbie...

So what? It does not matter. Learn what you need to learn. Stalkers STRICTLY not allowed.

K. Got it all in paper. Please click and fill-up my contact form or the sign-up button if you wish to be a partner in crime.

Happy Drup'ling this summer rainy season,

Marc Robinsone

marcrobinsone's picture

Since Jairah wants to learn more about modal box display techniques/modules (yung mga pop-up thingie), we might as well have a very short intro to them at the session. No promises but we might be able to squeeze it in.

Doable requests are always welcome.

Thanks for the initiative Marc! This looks like a very nice session.

We are a team of Drupal developers based in Fort Bonifacio, Taguig. We would be glad to sponsor this event. Please email me at angelo@amphiltech.com.

Thanks!

great initiative!

I agree. It's been a long time since I've been here sa local drupal groups natin and I'm so glad to see this! I'd like to join and help in any way too. I hope the location won't be too far from me though :)

I'm back*

loloyd's picture

Somehow, my email subscription to the Philippines group here at Drupal got reset - probably to the installation of new features. I've been in the dark for the past few months and this is very welcome news coming from Marc. I am now back at this group and will hopefully try to monitor the goings-on more closely from hereon.

I missed you guys. And I love you. From the heart of my bottom (see profile pic for sincerity emphasis).

Let's get it on, Marc! Let's get it on, guys!

*with a vengeance
Only local images are allowed.

touching :p

marcrobinsone's picture

Sounds like bromance to me. Yikes~!@ hahaha

Reminds me to look out for I Love You Man at our local movie theaters.

Gotta wait until the Manny-Hatton fight gets over with.

Go Manny!

loloyd's picture

Bromance? Hatton's style is bromance, while Manny Packyou is furiously homophobic. Anyways, I've had enough of Brokeback Mountain, what we need right now is Bijou/Stracy Stone, whatever your religion, she remains a goddess in my voyeuristic eyes. But I digress - I hope you'll also tackle more on Views.

Only local images are allowed.

...

marcrobinsone's picture

ehem on "bromance". +1 for views.

peterpunc's picture

Salamat sa planong event na ito. Sana makalitaw ako :)

welcome back :-]

marcrobinsone's picture

I also got myself busy entangled with a lot of non-Drupal stuff for the past few months which I think contributed to finding a very good formula in creating, managing, building Drupal sites easier (hopefully dummy-proof) even with the least of resources.

I shall 100% cover

(i) Install a fresh Drupal site (plus contrib modules, themes) with just the browser & internet (yes. No winzip nor text editor involved).
(ii) Upgrade a Drupal site (and modules) in less than a minute without breaking your system (with just your browser/internet of course).
(iii) Backiup database and files in a jiffy *(obviously with just your browser haha)
(iv) Demonstrate:
+ simpleviews
+ lightbox / popups api / shadowbox
+ what-ever we have time for.

Action items

To all interested, please post and advise your available schedule(s) or vote:
(a) between May 11 [mon] to May 16 [sat]
(b) between May 18 [mon] to May 23 [sat]
(c) between May 25 [mon] to May 30 [sat]

*also note which time slot you are comfortable/free to attend --> we want you to be as stressed-free as possible.

Venue choices as of this post:
(z) Fort Bonifacio, AFP Officer's Village Phase 4 -- thanks jigsgsfoo! | see map

#preference

marcrobinsone's picture

If I were a participant, I'd love to have option (a) -- May 16, Saturday between 9am to 5pm.

I want to be in a place where I can mingle and exchange ideas, therefore I would like to try (z) -- Fort Bonifacio.

Just my two cents.

Peace,

Marcky

peterpunc's picture

Let me start again: (b) bet. May 18 to May 23 (z) Fort Bonifacio

me too: Option (a) May 16 and (z) Fort Bonifacio

peterpunc's picture

I wonder if yung Fort Bonifacio bus ay dumadaan dun? :) Lets hear from jigsgsfoo? Thanks really for this training session for a noob like me. 4 years ago ko pa yata ginamit ang drupal, nakalimutan ko na :) Ok pala i share sa joomla peeps?

WTF? (where's the fun?), Drupal-geeks only?

* NO. NO. And NO. This session is open for Joomla peeps, Wordpress meeks even Plone greeks. We definitely want people to contradict our ways and teachings. RoR pals... keep your train where it belongs ---> the rail-road!

sabi ni jiggsfoo meron daw

marcrobinsone's picture

Or, para sa may extra car-seating capacity... baka pwedeng mag-meet some-where prior to the venue (in short "makikisakay"). I'm sure that'll be a fun bonding experience db?

Let's save gas, Maki-angkas. ;)

Diesel, or pedal-powered

loloyd's picture

I always save on gas because the automobile I use consumes diesel. =) Sige, kung saan ka man manggagaling ay pwede na tayong magkita kung saan man ako dadaan sa aking pinaggalingan hehehe. Text-text na lang when the day becomes close.

I also participated in the last Tour of the Fireflies http://tourofthefireflies.multiply.com/ pero di pala pwede maki-angkas sa bike ko dahil may brake cables sa ibabaw ng batalya c/o poor frame design. =(

Only local images are allowed.

May jeep na dumadaan

jiggsfoo's picture

Yung bus only goes through The Fort and end up in Market Market.

loloyd's picture

Date preferred: (c) between May 25 [mon] to May 30 [sat]
May 16 [sat] is ok too as long as late in the afternoon sana dahil may hangover pa ako niyan galing sa seminar/workshop sa malayong lugar.

Venue preferred: Anywhere there's ample parking space near the site. Parking for vehicles, bikes, kariton, kalesa, etc.

Only local images are allowed.

female in the house!

calmher's picture

Hi guys! Here are my preferences:

(a) between May 11 [mon] to May 16 [sat]
(z) Fort Bonifacio or (t) Makati, Asia Pacific College

how about:
+ cck
+ views
+ mahaba-habang usapan ata ito

I'm also excited to learn about your best practices in Drupal :D

Whoops!

loloyd's picture

Sorry, miss beautiful, if I sounded inexcusably chauvinistic in my previous post title which I refuse to edit. =)

Kung hindi man strict ang parents mo, malamang strict naman ang husband or boyfriend mo hahaha.

I hope we could settle onto a place na medyo relaxed or walang restrictions sa oras. This is highly improbable as we would be very well using electricity, a projector and I'm sure a few laptops, kandungan not included.

*/me plays Eat Bulaga jingle.

@arman & @alvinjohn:

loloyd's picture

Hehehe. Hindi pa po ako nagpa-"pass away" dahil masamang damo po ako - mahirap patayin, in other words, die hard.

Here's what I plan not to do:
1. Create multiple fake accounts here in Groups.Drupal.Org. I'll make some women, make some men, and then make the rest gleeful*.
2. Use all 6,000 of those fake accounts to vote for varying dates and places.
3. Chastise you for drawing a picture above of what looks like a phallic symbol.

Only local images are allowed.
*Weee!

ampz

marcrobinsone's picture

ampz. @loloyd: No it's not a phallic symbol, it's actually an up arrow. What made you think it's a male genitalia? Your mind is wandering my friend ha...

On another note buti di mo dream maging future spammer hahaha.

Publicity stunt

loloyd's picture

The fact remains - it still looks like a phallic symbol to me. Pero tingnan mo naman ang apparent effect ng ginawa mo (at ko), dumami tuloy ang na-intriga sa drawing mo and biglang dumami yung replies dito within a few hours lang hahaha, at knocked out si Ricky Hatton sa round 2 thanks to Manny Pacquiao. Living in my head, I'd like to think believe this little publicity stunt helped in campaigning for this thread.

I've been training to be a vertical spammer in my blogs and forum entries for quite a few years now. It's a hobby I guess. A wise masterful sensei once told me, "Enjoy life. There's plenty of time to be dead."

See? I'm indeed back, with a vengeance*.

preference - just a reminder & stuff

marcrobinsone's picture

mga peeps,

We would just like to remind that we only acknowledge straight answers for the preference.

Let's not complicate things by dictating stray choices because we really "need" your exact answers to make it easier for the organizers.

FYI, I live & come from Baliuag, Bulacan which is 2-4hours drive/commute away from Ortigas, Makati or Fort Bonifacio and I don't think I have hesitations spending time and effort to meet with our local Drupal community users, developers and sponsors. I've had an experience where I was required to travel against my flight schedule (and good weather) just to give a talk. I do the deed because I am more concerned to meet and share my time with these people (who has no hesitation whatsoever) than my own personal comforts. Sometimes letting go is worth it. Let's be fair to people who are certain about their decisions. ;) So be decisive, trust your instincts, choose wisely. It's not like hindi mauulit ito db?

@hwf829:Yes, there's a hidden agenda (which is not hidden anymore kasi nabuking mo na) that is to interview some attendees ala-Lullabot daily-voices podcast which is a short interview of local people about their Drupal experience, why they choose it, and etcetera. That's if we have the time po... so "if" mode for now siguro (di na kaya ng powers ko kung ako pa ang mag-aasikaso. mahirap din mag-edit).

While we're at it, let's unveil the other non-declared plans (which will be discussed at the workshop) that would benefit our local Drupal community so there are no surprises at this point forward.

Supposedly, surprise-not-anymore items:

  • Yak about meet-up scheds (online or physical gatherings considering other other than Manila. Visayas/Mindanao anyone?)
  • Project: Pinoy Make-over (sa event nalang natin i-didiscuss 'coz we don't want to tip-off the sponsor/s)
  • Drupal-PH shirts and giveaways
  • Group on-site visits (group field-trips as in visiting offices in the likes of Team Manila's, and other companies/orgs in or around the country. Sponsors for trip/flight fares still in the works)
  • Camp scheds (not relevant at the moment)

Again, these are just possibilities that will be discussed in the yet-to-be-decided gathering. Each of these items are not yet definite, that's why we'll try to debunk them one at a time.

For now, let's all help by deciding on the venue and if possible, try to contribute something good and irresistible.

Gumagalang,

marc

Shifting into higher gears

loloyd's picture

You can help simplify things by narrowing down the available choices*. People are saying what they are amenable to if they vote on open choices - for example, if one is OK with Makati or Fort Boni, then that's already a pair of flying votes for both Makati and Fort Boni. The same concept applies to the schedule. I don't think it's indecision; in fact, it's openness to what the most popular vote turns out to be. I guess the ultimate deciding factor would have to consider your convenience and your comfort since you're the one who's going out of his way to organize, prep up and do the meaty sharing. That's my unadulterated and unsolicited opinion, Marc.

To help contribute and since I am from Quezon City, I can pick up those who live relatively near to me in places convenient to me. I said places because I plan to designate pick up points en route to the meet-up venue. But the realities are:

  1. the pick up points depend on the chosen venue
  2. where I'm coming from depends on the chosen schedule (as I said, I may have schedule collisions)
  3. where I'm coming from affects the pick up points
  4. guys who I picked up must not pick on gals who I'll be picking up, if any
  5. picked up people can bring food (hint: chichirya), but must not eat in car
  6. picked up people must be able tolerate me listening to AM radio (am getting older and FM doesn't play heavy metal anymore)
  7. picked up people must not be picky about the condition of the air-conditioning
  8. picked up people must have pleasing personality, welcoming smile, funny disposition and optionally, some handy muscles to help change the tire if one ever gets flat

Only local images are allowed.
*The problem with democracy is that - it is always impeded by the liberties of everyone. Freedom must not infringe on the liberties of others.

...

marcrobinsone's picture

Baka magdalawang-isip naman ang makiki-angas sa'yo. Old muscle car pa yata ang dadalhin mo.

Oist. Make sure that your tire is checked, if possible, new. The road is slippery when wet.

k. k.

marcrobinsone's picture

Ok. Ok.

@loloyd: In lieu to your may-I-say-too-specific guidelines I felt the urge and the need to impose some change.

Deadline of preferences are now set May 12 (Martes). Limang araw mula sa pagkaka-post nito. Hating gabi ang cut-off time, 11:56pm internet time to be precise (yung four minutes akin nalang). PLEASE SEE main post for the CHANGELOG.

While giving exact values would be rather comfortable, the trifecta of choices are established with the purpose of informing attendees that we might be able to use the other venues in the near future.

There's a larger concept at play here. It's somewhere between Lost, Fringe, CSI, X-Files, and Darna? Just kidding. I was referring to crowd-sourcing, and the good ol' rule of trust, honesty, responsibility and if-you-may... Filipino chivalry.

Speaking of which... who said chivalry is dead? Whe, don't bother answering that 'coz he/she may probably be 6-feet below the ground anyway.

Thanks for this wonderful idea Mark!

Diaron's picture

Thanks for this wonderful idea Mark! I preferred option (a) for the schedule and (z) for the venue. Kung matatapat yung event between Tuesday to Saturday hahabol na lang ako, 'till 3pm pa ko sa office. Im looking forward to meet and share ideas with other Pinoy drupalers. Thanks again

@jigsgsfoo, please notify your manang that we're coming to town!

Let's list things that we now have figured out:

  • Meet-and-greet time is at 9-10am on May 16, 2009 (Sat).
  • Everyone needs to at least learn the geography of the venue
  • ASK, INQUIRE and stay informed.

More information will be given after I collaborate with jiggsfoo for the preparation of the venue.

Time to figure out what else we will need.

Kudos to all! Salamat sa pagbibigay-alam ng inyong mga sagot.

It's now time to plan for the event itself. Your participation will be highly regarded and well appreciated.

See you all at the workshop.

We'll wait for you at amphiltech's office at AFP Officer's Village Phase 4, Fort Bonifacio. Don't miss the morning session as we'll discuss the cream-of-the-crop tools that will surely help in easing your development.

For those who are going to have problems finding the venue, Market!Market! is a good extraction point. I will be at this extraction point at 8:00 to 8:30am. From there, we can go together. Text me if you are going to Market!Market! okay?

Of course, it's all right if you can go straight to the venue.

It's been another great experience for me cause I was able to attend the drupal seminar kanina!

From now on I can start to migrate the sites that I manage to drupal and also seen the flexibility and power of this framework.

My sincerest thanks to those who attended the workshop at amphiltech's office in Taguig City.

I extend my gratitude toward Larry and Rose for being such wonderful hosts. They provided us with all the resources we need including food, merienda, coffee, and equipment. Awesome Filipino food (delicious chit-chat)!

I hope to see you guys in our future events. Let's keep the ball rolling.

See you soon for the follow-up workshop (hopefully before the end of May).

Hello,

If you do not have a hosting for it, we'd like to offer a free lifetime hosting with own cpanel.

Just looking forward for the second follow up-workshop, the first workshop just did not fit my schedule.

Buti nalang may second coming pa :)

may third, fourth fifth pa

marcrobinsone's picture

may third, fourth fifth pa nga eh ;)

Interesting - drupal.ph domain

loloyd's picture

Yes, we can make that domain - drupal.ph - as the pivot point for all Philippine-based Drupal meet-ups. But since you own the domain, what you put there is entirely up to you, pedrochristopher. I hope you get to make good use of it.

This workshop (16th of May) also did not fit my schedule kahit anong pilit ang gawin ko. I think I can be more optimistic the next time around. So when's the second coming?

Only local images are allowed.

.ph

marcrobinsone's picture

@pedrochristopher:

I'm very glad to hear that you are planning to share the domain for the benefit of our community.

We can dedicate a Drupal session just dealing with how we're going to use the domain.

I can fly there if you want. Just let me know when so I can book my flight and plan my reservations. Dumaguete is special to me. I've always wanted to visit the first St. Paul school in the Philippines.

However, I think it would benefit everyone if we establish an event in a viable area like Cebu / Boracay / Palawan. I'm personally planning to travel to stay there for a couple of days anyway (I really miss Palawan).

This is just a very good

This is just a very good idea dedicating a Drupal session in the domain.

competent until proven otherwise

pedrochristopher's picture

i am not sure if it's a better idea to have a meeting about drupal.ph or just to slowly try to build the site collaboratively. i'm up for either although i don't have much flexibility for leaving dumaguete. i do already have a good host, same as the rest of my drupal sites so it's easier for daily backups, updates, etc. i did just add forums there on drupal.ph. if anybody wants to set up a business directory, there's probably some good module(s) so all could be listed. just let me know and i'll ftp whatever you want into the modules directory and give anyone who wants it approval for 'administrator' permission to be able to make almost any modification (if anything gets really hosed i do have daily backups). admins can be assumed to be competent until proven otherwise (i hope). peter

we can start by...

marcrobinsone's picture

We can start a group wiki-page proposing things that we want to do with it.

That way we can contribute our ideas for the domain collectively.

After which, a code-sprint(s) would be nice focusing on one feature at a time.

sounds good to me

pedrochristopher's picture

if you want to pick out a wiki module you like, send me the url, i'll ftp it to the site; then if you register there on drupal.ph , i'll add you as an administrator so you can configure the module and add the pages.peter

    • Why oh why are you still using Drupal 5? We discuss... Open forum anyone?

Action Items:

  • Get food sponsor
  • Decide on a Date & Venue comfortable to everyone

Your feedback is a must! We love your undying participation (now where's loloyd?).

Thanks for the support! Let's rock.

Debriefing muna sana

loloyd's picture

Wala ba tayong feedback from the last meet-up? Pictures? Class pictures? Pass your papers? Lessons learned from the participants? Stories? Scandals?

Nirecord ko po yung sessions ni Marc for uploading to Youtube kaso medyo busy lang po this week to process it.

We learned a lot from Marc. He even showed me that Windows CAN be a good web dev platform if you have the right tools.

Thanks ulit!

Multiply.com Clone

marcrobinsone's picture

Pardon me for being gone for a week or so. I got myself entangled with work.

@artshinobi:Okay. Let's do that.

Who's up for a Skype conference + Drupal online chat meetup this weekend? We can create a brand new Multiply site clone together without getting out of our houses?

How about: June 7, 2009 | Sunday, 2pm. We can do VNC / remote desktop viewing if bandwidth permits.

Or, if anyone can set a venue/date within the next few weeks, that's would be awesome! We can create a website together ala code-sprint.

You'll need to download and install skype. www.skype.com/download

Create a new account if you don't have one.

Then tell me your skype username so I can add you during the session.

Or, add me as a contact. My username is marc.robinsone on skype.

We can keep accepting participants during the skype call-conference.
