With DrupalCon going down in Denver this year, there seems to be (understandably) little interest in organizing DrupalCamp Colorado for 2012. The idea was tossed around for actual camping, which IMO would be a nice change after all the DrupalCon action. Note: If someone still wants to organize a Drupal Camp, don't let this stop you.

The Goal: To get some nature, relax and hang out with fellow Drupalers in a low stress, unplugged environment.

Here's the plan: Sylvan Lake has a few spots open together in Fisherman's Paradise in early July. Food, beverage, transportation, shelter is up to individuals and any groups that want to self organize.

Reservations can be made here. http://coloradostateparks.reserveamerica.com/campsiteCalendar.do?page=ma...
We're shooting for Fisherman's paradise. Sites 37-46 This is the only weekend available for a group of sites, so I imagine they will fill fast.

FAQ:
Q: How much does it cost?
A: Sites are $18/night and hold up to 6 peeps. An additional $7 day pass or annual state pass is required per vehicle.

Q: What should I bring?
A: Whatever it takes to make you happy.

Q: Can I bring my family?
A: See above question.

Q: Can I bring my pet?
A: Again, see above. Just obey the campground rules.

Gear needs

pixelwhip's picture

Also, if anyone wants to come and doesn't feel they have the proper gear, don't let that stop you. I have access to extra tents, sleeping bags etc. Just let me know and I'll see what I can do.

greggles's picture

I may not make it for the whole weekend/night, but hope to make it for at least one day.

For folks looking to do a big hike, the mountain of the holy cross 14er is pretty close and just needs endurance (i.e. there's no need for technical rock climbing equipment or anything). Even if folks don't make the summit it's a beautiful view.

I'm more interested in some in-camp games, though :) Who has a washers set or cornhole?

I'll bring the Yard Nards

Woot woot! I may be able to get my hands on a cornhole setup.

If you're gunning for it, Holy Cross is a pretty long day hike. U might want to start conditioning now.

Sounds like fun

I haven't been camping in years (but to be fair, my wife has never camped, EVER). But if it's just me, I'd be happy to go in on a plot with someone else (but being as tall as I am, I'd clearly have bring my own tent).

I have all the gear I need plus one extremely handsome yellow lab.

Anyone have a campsite with room for one more tent?

Did you find a campsite to pitch your tent on yet? We only have one tent, so we should have room if you still need a place.

Yes, thanks - Jim Swainston offered me a spot on his site. See you up there!

Who's at my campsite?

Rick Nashleanas's picture

We have 4 people at our campsite. I've offered up having rickmanelius and his wife to be at our site. I've also offered up j_matthew_s to join us. If these folks aren't going to be at our site, you are welcome, jordanlgraham.

Tarp & Lemon Drop Martinis

Rick Nashleanas's picture
  1. It doesn't look like we'll have much shade from the sun. Anyone have any bright ideas on a tarp or other shade for the day?

  2. I'm making a great lemon drop martini from scratch these days. I'm thinking of bringing a table to set up a bar for the adults. If no one's interested, I won't bother. Any takers?

Looks like state camping rules prohibit this. Oh, well.

Rick Nashleanas

No martinis?

cobadger's picture

That's surprising to me! I had been looking forward to a lemon drop martini.

That is an oft ignored rule

onelittleant's picture

That is an oft ignored rule reserved by the state parks to crack down on hooligans as necessary... don't be a hooligan... and maybe keep the martinis under wraps until after dark...

When martinis are outlawed...

greta_drupal's picture

When martinis are outlawed for hooligans, only hooligans will have martinis.

Bottoms up!

I'm bringing a 10x10 canopy

I'm bringing a 10x10 canopy and a shade umbrella. As for the lemon drop martini's ... sounds yummy and refreshing ... I'd definitely be up for those.

So without fire, we're thinking we're not going to go. With the evacs, we've already screwed up our daughter's sleep schedule and are pretty hesitant to do it again.

Would anyone like our spot?

What time is everyone

techgirlgeek's picture

What time is everyone planning to get up there?
I'm thinking of leaving after lunch assuming I can get everything done in the morning.

We're still in...

onelittleant's picture

Probably won't make it out until after work, but we're only about 1.5hrs from the site.

Sorry to miss u sirkitree. I'm sure it's been a tough few weeks down there.

We'll have a popup camper with an awning that can provide some relief from the sun. If you have beach umbrellas, etc. I'd say bring em. We were up on the shore at Ruedi Reservoir yesterday and the sun can be pretty intense.

Haven't heard about the fishing up there, but we're obviously in a good spot to sit and stare at a bobber for hours on end. We'll have fishing/swimming gear and 2 crazy kids under 5. Should be a riot.

Awesome! I have a 3 and 7

techgirlgeek's picture

Awesome! I have a 3 and 7 year old. The 3 year old will be happy to have some kiddos his age. The 7 year already has a friend coming up. :)

The more the merrier! I love

onelittleant's picture

The more the merrier! I love camping with the kids. They tend to run in a pack (less total parental oversight) and wear themselves completely out (no struggle at bedtime / beginning of happy hour).

Don't forget the sunscreen peeps...

Saturday Evening Potluck

pixelwhip's picture

It would be fun to get together potluck style Saturday night. I started a Google spreadsheet if anyone would like to fill in what they would like to bring. I think it would be easier if everyone provided their own main dish, be it steak, hot dogs, boca burgers or whatever you like. We'll have a small propane grill and a couple camp stoves if anyone needs them. Plan on providing your own beverages but if you want to bring extra to share, that's cool too.
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AiiYxfgIOcHHdDhLTnIwZmQ3MjZ...

We're planning on leaving around lunchtime on Friday and should be up there by 4 or 5. As everyone probably knows, there is currently a fire ban in effect so plan accordingly. We'll have a couple yard games and a frisbee as well as some card/board games for lack of fire. We'll also have at least one 10x10 canopy.

Clarification: While a campsite holds up to 6 people, there is a limit on tents and cars "Each campsite accommodates up to two tents, or one tent and one RV, with a maximum of six people per site and no more than two vehicles."

See you this weekend!

Potluck Idea

techgirlgeek's picture

I love the potluck idea. I'm still putting together my menu, so I'll let you know what we will contribute before the weekend.

I plan to leave around 1, so hopefully we should be up there between 4 and 5 as well. Looking forward to seeing everyone.

Available space

sreynen's picture

I have some extra space on my spot if anyone is looking.

Anyone want to carpool?

cobadger's picture

I'm heading up on Friday late-ish afternoon and coming back Sunday - would love to carpool with someone.

I have room for one or two others; my handsome dog will be one of our fellow passengers.

Anyone want to meet and carpool?

Don't drown!

Be careful and stay dry folks!

Rained out, but with you in spirit(s)

Rick Nashleanas's picture

Sorry we bugged out. A 15-year-old leaky tent betrayed us.

Now, I have 40+ lemons, 4 pounds of baker's sugar and 3.5 liters of citrus vodka. Well, I'm with you in spirit(s):

A test of mettle... and tents...

onelittleant's picture

Colorado Drupal extreme rain camping was a qualified success. While it was sad to see so many sites abandoned in the face of the deluge, and that picture of the lemon drop martini makes me certain that we all missed out (except perhaps for Rick), fun was had, stories told, games played, and libations consumed. We even had the biggest single game of bocce ball I've ever played. Here's hoping that next year the crowd swells and the thunderheads take a break.

Cheers!

Next year? Was hoping we

techgirlgeek's picture

Next year? Was hoping we could try again later this year.

For those of us who left, we really were so bummed, but with a leaky tent and a 3 year old in panic mode over the thunder it would have just been miserable for us.

Next year we are back to regular Drupal Camps, but hope we can have another Drupal Camping trip thrown in as well.

Maybe in a year or two...

jcfiala's picture

Hopefully once our little Rose is a little older we can try and join up as well!

P.S.

onelittleant's picture

Many thanks to Todd for the grand rain shelter. The trip would have been much less social without it.

Drupal Camping rocked!

toddota's picture

So, it rained a lot, but we had a grand time! Hammocks, bocce, board games, naps, good food, and great conversation were some of the highlights. Thanks to pixelwhip for organizing and helping us turn off our computers and to enjoy the outdoors. We need it!

Great time! Lots of rain,

cobadger's picture

Great time! Lots of rain, yes - but for a while there on Saturday it was actually sunny! Absolutely beautiful site - good walk, hammock rigging, bocce, games and getting to know people. I would love to try again (this season! or next) and have one of those lemon drops.

Sounds like fun...

My wife and I are in the 2nd Drupal Career Starter Program here on the space coast and fun coast of sunny Florida. So far, it's like learning a foreign language. We'll need plenty of help. We just arrived back from a short 2 week slide-in truck camping trip and feel as if we've been shot out of a canon. We'd love to join a group of like minded Drupal Campers.

It's so awesome that this
