Thoughts after initial use

We encourage users to post events happening in the community to the community events group on https://www.drupal.org.

Thnx for the ladder. Kudos!

Like yurtboy, I'm not sure that this is the right place for this post, but I couldn't find anywhere else. Apologies if I'm not following discussion guidelines - please let me know.

Some thoughts after climbing the first two rungs.

1. Say how to give feedback on the ladder

So yurtboy and I know what to do. We don't want to yurt anybody's feelings. (Are groaners discouraged?)

2. Initial state of complete flags

When I started on the ladder, the flags were all in the Complete state. On http://drupalladder.org/ladder.

3. About or home?

Front page is shown as About in the left tab, but Home in the breadcrumb.

4. Lesson navigation

Maybe a more book-module-like approach, with forward/back links. The nav bar should be at the top and bottom of each page - I've found this useful on other sites.

It might also help to have a menu block showing the pages in each lesson.

5. Comments vs tips

The comments section at the bottom of each page is being used for (at least) two different things:

  • Tips on how to complete the lesson.
  • Suggestions for improving the lesson.

Learners who get stuck might want to see the first, and be less interested in the second. Should comments and tips be separated?

6. Social?

Would it help to:

  • At the end of a lesson, have a link to an IRC channel appropriate for asking questions about that topic?
  • Have a way for people to find other learners near them, so they can help each other?

7. Metacognition

This may be more than anyone is interested in at this stage. But here it is, anyway.

Learning science research shows that people learn more when they think about what they have learned. That's what metacognition means.

Maybe add a per user field or two at the bottom of each lesson. Some possibilities:

  • What was the most important thing you learned from this lesson?
  • What do you want to know more about?
  • What advice would you give other people working on this lesson?

Mostly this helps learners. But it's good feedback for lesson authors as well.

Again, thnx for this initiative. It could help Drupal a lot, bringing more people in as contributors.
