Topics/Presentations

We'd like to see everyone come prepared to either pose a question/issue they've ran across in the past month, or something cool/amazing they've discovered in the past month. There are plenty of questions out there, so let's make sure we know what they are so we can get them all answered at this month's meetup!!

Additionally, please use the comments on this event node to suggest topics. If there is a consensus, we will try to have someone prepared to do an informal presentation.

Virtual Meetup!

We will be broadcasting at http://edc.adobeconnect.com/drupalnh

How do I answer a question from "management": why use D7 over other CMS'?

Some points for consideration

DamienMcKenna's picture
  • Unparalleled flexibility.
  • Great usability - particularly after a little bit of effort is put into it.
  • Scalability - can run some very busy sites.
  • Security - one of the best security records of any CMS product, OSS or otherwise.
  • Huge community - indicates both stable long-term support and high availability of developers, should it be needed.

People will hate me for this

Perignon's picture

People will hate me for this within the group but the real truth is it depends on your use-case.

There are perfectly good reasons for just using WordPress instead of Drupal or some other CMS. But those reasons depend on what you need.

I'm going to build a techy blog site pretty soon. And guess what, I'm going to use WordPress. Why? Cause it's nothing more than a blog and out of the box WordPress takes 1/20th the time to setup such a site. It' works - pick the tool you need to get your job done.

However; the eCommerce site I am setting up is 100% Drupal cause nothing else could compare based on my requirements for the project. Let the requirements select you tool.

I used to build all of my

rggoode's picture

I used to build all of my sites using WordPress.

And it IS much easier to set up.

The reason that I migrated to Drupal is--although most of the WordPress sites I built did what they needed to do out of the box... inevitably, the client would come around with some request or other to enhance the site. At that point I was frequently frustrated by all the hoops I had to jump through to bang a round peg into a square hole.

So at this point, my preference is to start with Drupal--even though it's harder to set up. Because once it's built, the options for expansion and customization are so much greater.

If the client can convince me that they will never need to add any new function to grow their online presence, then I will consider blasting through a quick WordPress install.

Beat me to it

Roger - I was just IMing Brady, thinking almost the same thing. Basically, it comes down to knowing your client. For instance, I have a client that has used a WordPress site I designed for him for 5 years. He didn't have a lot of cash up front at the time, but has since grown substantially. The time in between has given him both the acquired knowledge and financial resources to build something better, so we're moving to Drupal (+Omega) in FY2013.

So, know your client - relationships are key, as are setting expectations appropriately for all parties involved.

I agree completely. I guess

rggoode's picture

I agree completely. I guess my point would be to also educate the client and test their assumptions about what they are going to build. Ask them to look over the horizon to a year-or-five down the line, and consider what their expectations for growth are.

But to do that exercise NOW... Rather than a year or two later, only to discover that what they really need is a Drupal sitye and have to reboot.

If they have their eyes open and consider the potentials, it can be less costly and even less work (long run) to start out on a more robust and flexible platform.

Roger

The last website I built was

mkmagu's picture

The last website I built was with wordpress, you are right when you say you need to pick the right tool for the particular project. The one thing I did find with wordpress is that is very limiting with sizing photos. But then again you have a module like this one
http://gsrcny1.org/flagallery/gallery#/2
to showcase your photos makes up for it. I have not seen a similar module in Drupal. :(

You can always migrate the site later using e.g. Wordpress Migrate.

Drupal Ladder?

tfhakala's picture

Are we going to work through the Drupal Ladder at the start of the meeting?

Oy, not prepared for that yet....

But if you would like to lead it, feel free!!

Ladder appears to be D8 centric

BruceDawson's picture

There are a lot of D7 and D6 sites & developers out there; along with reasons to stay with each. Is there a reason Drupal Ladder is so D8 centric?

CIGNA race

MMachnik's picture

Note that the annual CIGNA corporate road race is also Thu Aug 9 in the early evening, 6:15 start I believe -- it's likely that getting into that part of Manchester will be very, very difficult -- they have had upwards of 6-8,000 people in the past and traffic and parking will be a problem. I am not sure myself that I will make the meetup (usually I do the race but not this year), but for those going, it will probably be necessary to allow up to an hour ahead of time to get there. You will probably want to avoid exit 5 too if you can, I know it has been really bad in the past the night of the race -- even worse than a Fisher Cats game. :) Anyway hope this helps...

Ouch! Looks like I will not

Bob Newby's picture

Ouch! Looks like I will not be making the trip from Portsmouth. See you all at the next one.

We might want to find another

mkmagu's picture

We might want to find another place to meet do to the road race. I googled the race it's going down Elm and looping to Canal. It may just be impossible to get to the meeting tomorrow night.

Parking at ABI

MMachnik's picture

I am not sure how parking at ABI will be. People will park wherever they can and walk up to Veterans Park to get ready for the race, it will be busiest during the hour or so before the race which means basically 5:15-6:15 (and there will be road closures on Elm and Canal though not all the way to Granite since the race turns left off Canal in the vicinity of Merrimack St. I believe). But I think that while during baseball games people avoid parking at ABI because of the signs, there's no baseball game in this case and people may just park wherever they can which would probably include the ABI lot. So you may want to try to get there early (which I know I won't be able to even if I am able to attend). Again -- hope this helps :)

Street closings

MMachnik's picture

http://www.unionleader.com/article/20120809/NEWS07/708099902

Street closings will start as early as noon as workers start preparations for the race. A portion of downtown Elm Street will close at 3 p.m. By 6:10 p.m., motor vehicles won’t be allowed on the race course, which involves Elm and Canal streets in the downtown and North End. Both the Notre Dame and Amoskeag bridges will be closed.

“At that point, downtown will be in a lock-down mode, said police Lt. Mike Hurley. That will last until about 7 p.m. Twenty-five police officers have been hired to control traffic, he said.

“It’s going to be very difficult for people to leave their business or get into their business,” he said. By 7:30 p.m., police will begin to slowly open up streets, with core downtown streets opening around 8 p.m.

Hurley suggests that north-south motorists use Union Street or city streets farther to the east; streets closer to downtown will be crowded, he said.

The main drag through the Millyard, Commercial Street, will be open, but cars will not be able to turn onto Canal Street, Hurley said.

Remy Sharp's HTML5 Enabling Script

ppatterson-edc's picture

Hey Damien - I read about your Drupal module that pulls in Remy Sharp's HTML5 Enabling Script - I was wondering, since that point (I think you wrote it last year), has Omega natively addressed HTML5 rendering in older browsers, or is it still common practice to use the module/script as a workaround?

I can't be there tomorrow night, in person or virtually unfortunately - but if you're attending, can you address it? I'm hoping Michelle/Jake hits "record" during the meeting (hint, hint). Otherwise I'll hit you up offline with questions (if that's okay).

I think Omega does, IIRC I

I think Omega does, IIRC I built that tiny module for use with another theme.

Hey everyone, I got a topic

Perignon's picture

Hey everyone,

I got a topic for tonight if anyone is interested. It's a little more on the in-the-weeds and not sure if it would bore the crap out of people.

I been messing around with MongoDB as a cache for Drupal. I've had both good and bad things happen with it.

I've been having some RSODs

Perignon's picture

I've been having some RSODs (Red Screens of Death, haha) running MongoDB. Maybe we could make this a segway into talking about debugging Drupal problem with stuff like Devel/Kromo

I'm going to pass

ripinnh's picture

Between the traffic and the threat of rain (I'd be on my motorcycle since we're down to just one car and Tom needs it because it's our night to visit my Mom) I'm going to pass for tonight. Bummer.

How about meeting at Panera

mkmagu's picture

How about meeting at Panera Bread in Bedford?? I know it's short notice but with the race and all it maybe a good alternative, They have free wifi we could just put some tables together.

http://biz.alllocal.com/b/panera-bread/bedford/nh/sandwiches/73552

Mary M.

Panera's wifi is horrible!

miche's picture

So, I don't think they are a good option.. And we cannot reschedule for at the ABI space since we have a standing reservation. We'll just have to make the best of it.

Tonight

I think I'll skip this meeting so I don't have to deal with the traffic and the runners, not that I mind runners:) It won't be easy getting into Manchester from the highway tonight. See ya soon, Sheryl

Yup. I am out as well. My

Yup. I am out as well. My wife is coming back from Bedford, NH right now and already reporting traffic problems on Rt3. Manchester is a sea of yellow and red on google's traffic maps already.

I'm going to pass as well,

I'm going to pass as well, really don't want to deal with the traffic.

Mary M.

Damn I'm glad I didn't go.

Damn I'm glad I didn't go. Traffic is backed all the way up into Nashua on Rt3 from north of Merrimack to like exit 5!
