How have you solved the issue of Volunteer Scheduling in churches such that a volunteer is not scheduled into more than one spot at the same time? Whatever you use, does it have notification capability so that the a reminder can be sent out to the volunteer?

We don't use Drupal for this,
We don't use Drupal for this, we use PlanningCenterOnline.
Not free
Not perfect
Not Drupal
... but it has enough 'church stuff smarts' that replacing it with Drupal would be decidedly non-trivial.
Has reasonably comprehensive notifications and resource allocation/tracking for our size of organization, we track about fifty volunteers across the various functions.
Re: We don't use Drupal for this,
We also use PlanningCenterOnline.com and quite honestly, it would take a MAJOR dev effort to do the same in Drupal. Maybe another approach would be to build a module that would hook to PCO.com? I know their calendar syncs with Google via iCal so there are probably other APIs.
Just an idea...
CiviCRM
A CiviCRM/Drupal platform may be a solution as well, I am currently testing/working on customizing it to work for multiple Churches and Ministries, but can easily and effectively be used for a singular organization ulitilizing CiviMember, CiviMail, CiviEvent for your needs.
Feel free to contact me if you have any specific questions and need some help.

It is my every intention to make a native drupal solution to this based on the Party module. Unfortunately I don't know when we'll be able to do it but if anyone is a developer who wants to get involved I will be more then happy.
We're setting up a version of Party aimed at churches as soon as we can now.
(Party is a native Drupal CRM system)
Keep me posted if you do
Keep me posted if you do start on this. I've been brainstorming about a ChMS (church management software) distribution based on one of the new native CRM solutions.
I think there are some brilliant things that could be done.

Check the CiviVolunteer Spec ...
we've got some new blood and more traction on a potential civivolunteer module.
