Expanding on the White House Petition Code

Events happening in the community are now at Drupal community events on www.drupal.org.

Many folks on this list have already heard the news that the White House released their first set of Drupal code on GitHub:
https://github.com/WhiteHouse/petition

And it is for the petition/advocacy tool that they built here:
https://petitions.whitehouse.gov/

This has gotten a good deal of coverage on Reddit & other sites who are excited about government participation in open source.

There were some really engaging BoF's last year where we looked at being more strategic & collaborative in our work to develop better online advocacy tools in both London and Chicago. Hopefully they have continued in Denver & Munich but I haven't heard (and didn't go).

I'm curious if others have checked out this distribution and if there is renewed interest in building on this to produce the next generation of online campaign tools.

It looks pretty sharp, but might be too large for most non-profits to use. Still, there must be code or ideas to work from to make this more available to smaller organizations.

Expanding on the White House Petition Code

Hi,

I found this thread searching Drupal communities for White House petition. I'm a program director at Code for America where I work with volunteer tech communities to respond to opportunities like this one. I'm in communications with the folks at the White House who wrote and manage the code. We've identified some interesting opportunities that should incentivize forking of this repo for enhancements. The first is the Generic Theme item in the README. Making it easier for others to customize the look and feel is needed. Another high value item is packaging and making it easier to install. We figured we'd start with the theming.

I'm writing today to see if there is interest in organizing around these tasks. If so, I ask that you please contact me be sending your name & email through the form here: http://brigade.codeforamerica.org. When you receive your welcome letter please indicate that your are replying in regards to the White House petition activity

Hope to hear from you.

Best Regards,

I wanted to note that there's a Drupal project page for this distro now here http://drupal.org/project/petitions

I'm also curious how things went for Code for America? Is there going to be a generic theme produced? Would be so much better just to leverage AdaptiveTheme or Zen which everyone knows rather than 44.
