Does anyone have experience with this? So far I know I need my_module.views.inc and a call to hook_views_data()
But I have been unsuccessful in actually creating anything accessible from the view ui.

I did some of that for views1 last year. If I remember correctly, it was kind of a pain - the array structure you define has to be very specific and the docs are not always clear. Maybe bring up your problem tonight at the meetup and someone may have more recent experience?
