How to update from one OP version to another

Is there documentation available describing the upgrade process from one OP to the next?

I noticed in Drupal we receive an update status when the latest release was added for the whole distribution but not individual OP modules.

I found the best option was to backup contrib modules, libraries, theme customizations, files folder and settings.php then upload the full release.

Copy backed up items to their respective places, run update and whalah.
