I have changed the heading , beinging a newbie, I think it would be a great place to ask questions and get some answers....
Okay, Ive only just signed up and joined this group, What next??? I have no Idea :( Ive never joined a group, I seen a link on the side that said " Create Discussion' So here I am creating a discussion!! Why? Well its because Im new to Drupal, Im hoping to pick a few brains to get me off and running... I dnt even know if Im in the right place, correct me if I am. Either way, maybe someone will 'discuss' back so at least Im doing something right :p
If al else fails then maybe this is a good thread for any newbies, to discuss stuff, If there is anyone that may know more then the next person, no matter how much, then subscribe to this thread, you may become valuable to a newbie. I usually pick things up pretty fast, I may just be starting out with Drupal But I like what I see.... Im starting a website for a junior football club, so Im hoping, if I get the hang of it, using Drupal for other sites I create.

Welcome
It's officially a discussion now. Nice weather we're having huh?
It couldnt be more
Cheers for your reply.... Yes it is now a discussion ;)
The weather has been beautiful, fantastic... Its a shame I have had to be inside reading and reading all how drupal works... Knowledge is key, But sometimes I kinda feel I jsut need someone to tell me how things are done... lol.
some ideas
Hey Shanni
You could try looking around for some tutorials, that's how I got started. There are also a few good books around now.
Basically the best way to learn is build a community site. If there's something you're interested in, build a site for it! Do it with friends if you want. Or, if you feel confident enough, you could take on a nice easy Drupal project and get paid to learn!
The main thing you need to learn about when starting off with Drupal is modules. A website is built from modules, and there are 3 basic kinds:
1. core - these are always included, things like menu, node, block, user and others.
2. contrib - these are contributed modules that you can download and add to your site. Three of the most common are Admin Menu, CCK and Views, but there are hundreds to choose from.
3. custom - these are modules you make yourself, either from scratch, or by modifying a core or contrib module.
After you have an idea about modules, some other concepts you will want to learn are:
- nodes and node types (a.k.a. content types)
- paths and url aliases
- blocks
- menus
- views
- themes
I think there are 3 "levels" to learning Drupal:
1. How to build a site (implementing and/or content management)
2. Theming
3. Module development

Ideas YEH YEH
Thank you! You know I have been up ALL night, No sleep!! Reading and reading, Im starting to die in the bottom right about now though... But Im so determained to feel like I have somewhat accomplished something to the site Im building.
I have taken on a job for a football club, I did start out using Joomla :( But after sometime, there was no way to catagorize what I need. No module would stand up to the test. So I thought to try out Drupal, well, I must say, its much more cleaner!! But more confusing.... I think the main thing is the language of Drupal... SO this morning I started to read how Drupal speaks... hahaha.... Its different to other programs/platforms Its something to get use to.
There is one thing im worried about - IF, I say a BIG IF... I manage to complete the site successfully, after handing it over, and showing the new administrator who it all works ( by then I should know right!) Im hoping with some lessons they will be able to maintain it easy. I mean after a site is put all together in drupal, will it be difficult for them to post their news, info, and all that.... ?
As far as Module development goes..... huh, no where near that yet, Im still trying to work out how to link up and show the Advanced profile module.... I managed to work out the Forum, Just not placing the link in a menu yet.... (yes, I know, seems silly, Im shaking my head right now)
I thank you for your imput. got any other advice or direction and feel like typing some more to me, go right ahead.
Cheers
Shanni
I can highly recommend the
I can highly recommend the Lullabot video training series if you don't like reading manuals (like me): http://store.lullabot.com/products/the-everything-bundle
They may seem a bit pricey, but to put it in perspective you're getting about a week's worth of training for what a normal in-person session would cost for a day.
Otherwise, there's a load of manuals available: http://www.drupality.com.au/topics/drupal-resources/drupal-books
Reading is not my thing
I have to agree, I dont like to read a lot, I get tired reading from a computer screen after some time, And when I want to do something, like create a content page and link it to the menu under a group, im still yet to work out, with so much texts, I feel like Im going nuts!!!
Thanks you, I will take a look and see if its worth the money, otherwise, I will have to stick with reading.
The links are always appreciated....
cheers

Shanni, there's a heap of
Shanni, there's a heap of screencasts / videos about Drupal and specific Drupal modules on YouTube, which are very helpful, step-by-step tutorials. Just do a search.
Some people who provide good Drupal videos are:

Sean Effel
Lullabot
Good luck.
Oh, and beware module creep. Don't do what I did (blush) and install every module under the sun all at once. Take it in baby steps.

YouTube Amazing stuff
hahahha YouTube!!! I dont know why I didnt think of that.... I checked out YouTube once to find out how to cut basic boys haircuts so I could save some money and cut my two boys hair on a regular basis. After watching vid after vid, I thought, You beaut!! I can do this, went out bought proper hair cutting tools, and havent looked back since.... Saving myself about $20 bucks per hair cut every few weeks or so.
Thats where Im heading right now, thanks for the tip!
And no been there done that with Joomla, installing so many modules, my head started spinning..... lol... Not this time, taking what I need for the footy community, and thats it.
Talk again soon...
Cheers

Hi Shanni As far as the
Hi Shanni
As far as the video's go you can save lots of bandwidth if you use itunes . There are a heap of podcasts you can download and watch offline .
Also Wamp or mamp ( depending on your system , are easy to set up local servers so you can easily instal and play with drupal on your own system, see if things work .
Question about Theme not displaying
Hello
I have been configuring many things, as we all do while setting up, I have noticed the user profile area including the sign up page i.e - www.bvpanthers.com.au/user is not showing the theme like the rest of the site, Now, every other pages at present are ok, but just the user area...
I have been going over ever possible part, I just cant seem to find the issue for the life of me,
Does anyone have any Idea's??
Another Question
Hey there.
Does anyone know where I can get hold a mod, that is for Australian Football, that will help with Results/fixtures and Ladder results etc... What would it cost to have someone create such a mod? If there is nothing available.
anyone? anyone?
Have you tried the
Views module?
Hi Shanni, Check out:
Hi Shanni,
Check out: http://drupal.org/project/sport - although it's incomplete at this point, you could contact the developer to see where they're at with it.
You may have specific needs for the way your ladder works, so a custom solution might be the only answer - if so, spec out what you're after exactly, and then post a notice to http://groups.drupal.org/jobs.
GL!
Thanks Alex. I did look at
Thanks Alex.
I did look at it and they said its just not ready. Its a shame. It would be great to have something for the football.
Isn't the Aussie rules
Isn't the Aussie rules season coming to an end now though? If you explain a bit more about what you are wanting to do, I might be able to give some better advice.
I'd be interested in helping
I'd be interested in helping develop the module. Can you give a few more details about what you need it to do?
Rugby League Football Mod
Footy is coming to the end of the season. This doesnt mean the players do! The website Im doing is for a Football Club. It would be great to have a mod setup for the admin to be able to show the season draw, that shows, Round 1,2,3 and so on.. with the date, home team v away team and venue. A Ladder/Results table that can be easily updated with team names, see the NRL Eels website- scroll down page look on the right http://www.parraeels.com.au/default.aspx?s=home-old .
Team Logo support to be able to place thumbnails, gee Im not a football supporter, I personally dont know a lot about the game, Im just putting a site together for the club. But It would be great to have something to work with in the Admin area just for the fixtures/results Upcoming games, teams etc etc... even something that can be connected to the APK about the games stats so When the details are placed in, admin has the option to have it displayed on the profiles....
If there are any Aussies Rugby fans then can add to this, or what could be a good feature in a mod, then feel free to add your comments.
I wish I knew how to create mods, I would certainly give it a crack.
Here in Australia we have Aussie rules, Rugby League and Rugby Union. Having the three to choose from would be a great all round Australian Football mod.
Are you thinking of a module
Are you thinking of a module that would manage an entire league. So you would enter a draw the fill in the results and have the ladder, etc automatically generated? Or are you thinking of a site just for a single team where you just enter the fixture for a single team and manually enter the current ladder each week?
For the type Im looking
For the type Im looking would be just for the team, for their viewing to see where they stand. Ummm I had a look at the Sports site they use http://www.sportingpulse.com/assoc_page.cgi?c=1-3224-0-0-0&a=COMPS For this, However I need to become a member to see how its laid out. But basically it would be needed for their team only - Fixtures/Results and Ladder.
Everything you have
Everything you have described is easily done with current Drupal modules. The hard part is that you have to input all the information.
In order to input all the information about the fixture, teams etc you need to first design something akin to a form. In Drupal speak we call this a 'node type'. The design of this form is done with a module called CCK. You may also need extra modules to increase the types of fields that CCK can handle.
From this 'node type' under create content you then fill in all the information for one match per form. Fields for results etc would have to be left blank until after the match when that form is then edited to add the results etc.
All this information ends up in the Drupal Database. CCK takes care of this.
You then create web pages that display all the information that you want to display using a module called Views. The current Views 2 module as part of Drupal 6 is just spectacular in the various ways it get all this information, massage it in various ways and create web pages or blocks that display it.
The two modules, CCK and Views, take some time to learn. That effort is time well spent. They are the basis of many great sites and give you the ability to do so much, most of which requires no programming at all.
Hope this helps

Thank you Ken
I really appreciate your fine comment, Im going to look at this more closely. Cheers for that!!
Pay job available
I have a job for an experienced Module fixer uppera!! I installed the category mod and ended up with a fatal error, Fatal error: Call to undefined function category_node_get_categories() in /home/.../public_html/sites/all/modules/category/category.module on line 883
I have been searching the forums for a solution, of course there is not a proper one anywhere. It looks like Im going to have to pay....
Im offering $50 to have this issue fixed. I cant seem to get the free advice, so perhaps paying someone I hope to.
If there is anyone that is willing to advise me for free, then fantastic, I will buy you a beer if you live near the central coast/sydney areas... Otherwise I dont mind parting with some cash to have this resolved.
Look forward to your replies ..
Cheers

( just another option, just had to throw that in there... ) Okay, I will now wait eagerly for any superdooper, fantastic, wonderful smart drupal bug fixers to get chatting with me ..... hehe
