Spam Flag for Comments

Events happening in the community are now at Drupal community events on www.drupal.org.

The user interface needs a spam flag for comments to report spam content using the flag module http://drupal.org/project/flag

Examples of comment spam:

I reported spam for this topic twice before and I think the process needs to be streamlined. (I reported via [General feedback] since the groups's manager does not have a contact page. http://groups.drupal.org/user/3715)

I've deleted these 3 messages. Looks like someone else already took care of the users. I'll let someone else reply to the suggestion of flag.

flag / voting

I'm very interested in the idea of a "flag" or voting API based solution. We need to let the upgrade to 6.x shake out a little bit first, but once we are stable I am very interested in creating richer tools for giving feedback about comments/posts on this site.

flag is a great solution for

flag is a great solution for the spam reporting need on many sites. but on this site, we simply have to prevent spam. typically, a spam post gets mailed out to hundreds of people within an hour. thats why we stick with mollom.

yes - multiple purposes

greggles's picture

Yes, I (finally) understand that gdo has a very strong need for a preventive spam blocking mechanism. But we also get a bit of spam that sneaks through and flag (or similar) would be helpful for dealing with that.

On a related note, I think that sites like StackOverflow.com have shown that voting on posts and comments can provide interesting additional value for site readers and feedback to content authors.

Flags Still Useful

I'd like to have a flag so that it's obvious how to report comments like this:

Having something on the about page on how to mark spam would also be useful.

agreed - and working on it

greggles's picture

Yes, I totally agree and am working on bringing a solution like this to the site.

  • I believe we should include for sure a "vote up down" feature on nodes and comments and then a corresponding view of content sorted by highest votes in either direction with some other filtering capabilities (i.e. posted in last day, last week).
  • And then maybe include a feature for "flagging content as inappropriate" with a corresponding view for admins to deal with that content (either reporting it to mollom and deleting it or just "un-flagging" it).

What are your thoughts on this idea? You can see how I'm thinking this will work in a video I made (for the IxDA.org site that my company is building, which lets us re-use the features on g.d.o): http://www.vimeo.com/8278850 The demonstration of the flagging behavior starts at about 16 minutes into the video.

Nice Video!

The four icons you set up in your video look pretty good.
- Thumbs up
- Thumbs down
- Favorite/Stared
- Flag as inappropriate

icons for functions listed above

I do think that would be a good usability enhancement and allow for issues like this to be quickly identified by admins.

Instructions for Reporting Spam

jdwalling's picture

If the Mollom filter doesn't work, there needs to be clear Instructions for Reporting Spam on the About page: http://groups.drupal.org/about
p.s. If we can remove spam posts faster, subscribers might be spared the hassle of investigating.
p.p.s My comments are being blocked by the spam filter - WTF!

not sure

The mails go out before spam is removed. That's why we need mollom (or something like it) which acts before people manually moderate.

p.p.s My comments are being blocked by the spam filter - WTF!

It happens. I'm all ears for better solutions.

False positive spam blocks

jdwalling's picture

Sometimes I get the option of using Captcha and sometimes the spam filter just says "not accepted" without offering Captcha.

I suggest adding some logic which always offers Captcha if the user is established for more than some period of time, say 30 days.

I get this message: "Your submission has triggered the spam filter and will not be accepted."
when I attempt to edit a comment I posted 2009-03-11
-- groups.drupal.org/node/19491#comment-67362
I get the rejection even if I add a space to the comment and I don't get the Captcha option.

We can do better than this mind numbing Catch-22.

BTW, I had to remove HTTP from the above link as it triggered the spam blocker!!
