Regular playday/coworking, Princeton area ?

Events happening in the community are now at Drupal community events on www.drupal.org.

I'm thinking about organizing a regular playday/coworking group. Maybe as often as once a week or multiple times per month. I have a number of personal and Drupal community projects I want to work on, and I find I'm more productive when not trying to do it at home. The idea would be anyone could come and work on any kind of project (business or personal) and just work in the company of others, get advice, give advice, etc. For me, it would have to be after hours during the week, or weekend. I have no location in mind. Anywhere between Piscataway and the general Princeton/Trenton area.

If anyone is interested, post or contact me.

Yes, I'd be into joining something like that a couple times a month at least.

In Princeton who are possible hosts? IAS, Princeton Univ, Princeton Public Library... others?

I'm interested

Spend too much time on project/vendor management during the day. I want to get my hands dirty on code!!!

Princeton would work great for me - could we use the university or IAS or the public library?

Something like the library

davidhernandez's picture

Something like the library would be good. I'm thinking some place public, that we don't have to reserve. Also, near food/coffee. My only concern with the library is parking. I know those with memberships can get it validated for the garage, and there are a couple PU lots within reasonable walking distance, but I want to make sure it is convenient for people.

I can't think of any place closer to RT 1, unless it's Starbucks or Panera, but I find places like that too small and crowded.

What about day? I was thinking Thursday might be good, so that the Drupal meet up will take its place once a month and we don't feel burnout doing both in the same week.

Some other options

West Windsor Public Library (near Junction train station) - can't buy food, but there are some public rooms that we could reserve and bring in food/coffee from plaza around the corner.

Hamilton Public Library (off Rt. 1 ) - 1 large space that can be sub-divided.

Wegmans upstairs - food and wireless, don't know if we can reserve space.

Wegmans!

I think Wegmans is a great idea. I've been to that upstairs part a few times, and I've never seen it so packed that we couldn't find some space. In fact, it's usually quite open. Plus, there is food/drinks for those who would want some (me!). Finally, I think that we would feel a bit more free to have a conversation than if we were at a library.

It sounds like trying out a

It sounds like trying out a few different places will be a good idea. I would prefer easy to get to, access to food, easy parking, not too loud, open late (if during the week), wifi, and no reservation.

Princeton or other Public Library?

I'm thinking closer to RT1 and easy to park is more likely to bring in people that aren't directly in Princeton, although the shopping centers are a bit of a stale setting.

one more place to consider

Plainsboro Library off RT 1 and Schudders Mills Road. Lots of parking space, rooms, and food too :)

Great idea

Not sure the restaurant is open - they were doing some work on it. But you can get coffee and there is a cupcake shop and "It's a Grind" coffee shop not too far away...

Wegmans is open until

Wegmans is open until midnight and has free wifi. Has anyone used their wifi? Is it decent speed?

Anyone interested in this

Princeton Public Library?

vuzzbox's picture

There are some great spaces in the Princeton Public Library available for a small fee and a reservation. Open till 9:00pm on weekdays.

seems they have an open /free space on Fridays.

@vuzzbox David and I discussed the public library as an option in IRC, but David wanted something reservation-less. Still, if you're motivated to organize something there, we can see how it works. I'm leery of having to pay for space, however.

libraries not open late

avalani's picture

libraries are not open late in the evening on weekdays, so that might be a concern. For plainsboro library, people can work in a group in the open area and it is free of charge.

good idea

I like the idea very much. Not sure how often I'll be able to attend, but I'll make it when I can.

I'm going to do today

davidhernandez's picture

I'm going to do today (Thursday) at the Wegmans in Nassau Park shopping center off RT 1. http://www.wegmans.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/StoreDetailView?langId=...

I'll be in the upstairs Market Cafe seating area. If there is no one in the back, I'll squat there. 6:30pm is probably a good time. FYI - There are no outlets that I know of, so bring devices fully charged.

Princeton Public Library

JanieH's picture

I am the public programming librarian at Princeton Public Library and this thread came to my attention via Google alerts... and I am glad it did. Our library is currently working with two area tech meetup groups as co-sponsors and we are always willing to explore further collaborations within the tech community. In addition, our web site is Drupal so we have many staff members who are conversant with Drupal and some of our tech staff might even want to join in at times with this group.

If the library collaborates with this group we can offer private space for meeting free of charge with lots of places to plug in and charge up, free wireless, etc. We are open until 9 pm weeknights, including Fridays!

Here are the two groups we currently co-sponsor:

If you are interested in exploring the options at our library, let me know and we can discuss options.
