Start:
2013-01-28 17:00 - 19:00 America/Los_Angeles
Event type:
User group meeting

Are you a freelancer or service provider who's looking for Drupal work? Do you represent a company or organization that's looking for Drupal talent? Come and make new friends and turn new connections into long-term relationships at the next Los Angeles Drupal Job Fair from 5-7pm on Monday, January 28, 2013.

This event is FREE for individual job seekers and is being hosted by Droplabs, a collaborative coworking space, classroom and hackerspace in Downtown Los Angeles. In addition to being the venue of the only Drupal job fairs ever in Los Angeles in June, 2011, and November, 2011, Droplabs hosts the majority of Drupal activity, from meetups, topic-based summits and code sprints to free workshops, tutoring sessions and paid trainings, in the Greater Los Angeles Area.

Light food and drinks are being provided by Chimney Coffee House, our favorite neighborhood cafe, bakery, sandwich and dessert boutique.

Information for Job Seekers ^

Are you a freelancer or service provider? The job fair is FREE for individual job seekers!

We strongly recommend the following guidelines to help you improve your prospects:

  • Arrive at the job fair when it starts at 5pm;
  • Come prepared with plenty of resumes or your business cards;
  • Update your profiles on Drupal.org and LinkedIn;
  • Check this page often to see which listed employers match your expertise and job interest.

There is nothing else to do other than arriving at the event between 5-7pm.

Information for Employers and Recruiters

Are you an employer or representative of a company or organization? We have a limited number of tables for exhibiting companies and organizations. Employers who register for the job fair will be listed in this job fair event announcement. Tables are provided on a first-come, first-served basis for our Featured- and Marquee-level sponsors.

Contact us at jobs-jan28jobfair@droplabs.net or at http://droplabs.net/contact to discuss sponsorship opportunities.

Sponsors and exhibiting companies are urged to arrive early (between 4-4:30pm) to allow enough time to select a table, set up and prepare for interviews.

Droplabs is also available as a venue to employers and job seekers for follow up interviews in the days and weeks after the job fair, and the benefit of using our private conference room is included in several sponsorship levels.

Your sponsorship is immensely appreciated and all contributions go directly towards funding this event. Any unused funds will be used for other Droplabs events and infrastructure, promotion and distribution needs, including future Drupal meetups and job fairs. Thank you!

This is our 3rd job fair at Droplabs

christefano's picture

This is our 3rd job fair at Droplabs and we're doing things a little differently this time around.

Apparently we did so well at our last job fair that we were visited by employers and recruiters who didn't register for the event. This time we've created a new Party Crasher Sponsorship level in case that happens again!

We're also raising the sponsorship levels. Even though these job fairs are beneficial to our developer and business communities, producing an event like this is a significant investment of time and work. Fortunately, our previous sponsors have preferred pricing this time:

  • Marquee Sponsors of our previous job fair are automatically being given a Featured Sponsor table at this job fair at no additional charge;
  • Our Marquee Sponsor of this job fair will automatically be given a Featured Sponsor table at the next job fair.

We feel these changes are fair to all involved and provide good incentives for keeping our business community engaged with our local developer community. If anyone has any questions, please don't hesitate to let us know. Contact us at jobs-jan28jobfair@droplabs.net or at http://droplabs.net/contact

Remote Job Seeker

vmi's picture

As a job seeker - are there any options available to participate remotely?

If I'm unable to attend in person, would it still be possible to have my info. available to the potential employers and recruiters?

Use our "take a card, leave a card" table

christefano's picture

Good question!

Job seekers who are unable to attend the job fair on January 28th are welcome to send us their resumes, which we'll print out and place on our "take a card, leave a card" table.

Of course, everyone is welcome to drop by any time and leave their business cards and resumes at our "take a card, leave a card" table. It's been a permanent fixture at our space since opening in early 2011.

Meanwhile, job seekers who are able to attend in person are strongly encouraged to follow a few simple guidelines:

   http://groups.drupal.org/node/275138#job-seeker-information

These guidelines are good advice for everyone, whether they can attend the job fair in person or not.

Sending in resume

vmi's picture

That sounds really convenient.

Are there any guidelines to sending in a resume to be printed and placed on the table?

  • Is there a email address with any specific subject line I should use?
  • Any specific file format you'd prefer?

Droplabs' "take a card, leave

christefano's picture

Droplabs' "take a card, leave a card" table is provided as a simple service to our community. Job seekers are their own representatives.

That said, so long as we can print it, any format will work and we'll put it out on our table. PDF, DOC, DOCX and ODT preferred.

LinkedIn has a nice resume builder, and I encourage everyone to update their profile and give it a try:

   http://resume.linkedinlabs.com

It even supports Markdown.

I think all your other questions have already been answered at http://groups.drupal.org/node/275138#job-seeker-information but please let me know if I missed something or if you have any more questions.

Email address

Thanks for the tip about the resume builder, I'll check that out.

Also, is the email address listed on the Droplabs contact page the best one to use to send in a resume?

Thanks for the correct email address and for offering such a accessible option.

Getting a resume printed and displayed on my behalf without having to drive around is so convenient, I'd be happy to donate in order to help cover the expenses for this great service.

Thanks for the correct email

We accept donations in any amount, but we'll include a month of coworking and membership for each $25 amount ($50 gets 2 months, etc.) that comes in. At $150, we'll include a key-holder membership. Details are on our site:

Job rec placed on your table?

Michael-IDA's picture

Hi Christefano,

everyone is welcome to drop by any time and leave their business cards and resumes at our "take a card, leave a card" table.

We're trying to fill this CMO position http://upc-exchange.com/job-avail-chief-marketing-officer (person to be hired must have Drupal 6 SEO module knowledge). May we have a copy of this job rec placed on your table?

We won't be in LA anytime soon, so I'll send the Valued Sponsorship questions though mail.

Best,
Sam

Thanks, Sam. I've responded

Thanks, Sam. I've responded to your email. If you have any other questions, please let us know here or at jobs-jan28jobfair@droplabs.net

I've also updated the sponsor information to help differentiate between the various sponsorship levels regarding name and logo placement:

Thanks!

Thanks to everyone who's sent

Thanks to everyone who's sent in their resumes. Keep them coming!

Please note that that this has always been a service at Droplabs and that anyone reading this is welcome to send us their resumes for our "take a card, leave a card" table.

On our Meetup.com group at

christefano's picture

On our Meetup.com group at http://www.meetup.com/DowntownDrupal, someone asked a great question:

I'm a graphic designer looking to partner with a Drupal developer who can work on a contract or hourly basis. I don't see any freelancer categories. Are we still welcome?

Everyone is welcome to attend and exhibit at our job fair. If you're hiring developers, you qualify as a potential sponsor. Please contact us at jobs-jan28jobfair@droplabs.net to discuss sponsorship levels.

The sponsor benefits have

christefano's picture

The sponsor benefits have just been updated to include tickets to the Drupal Jobs Summit later in the evening from 7-9pm:

   http://groups.drupal.org/node/276883

The jobs summit is a roll-up-your-sleeves working meeting for companies and organizations who use and depend on Drupal, as well as a healthy business community and marketplace. We'll be meeting one another (many for the first time) and discussing the following topics:

  • Building a healthy marketplace of colleagues and potential partners;
  • Getting the most out of our recruiting and marketing dollar;
  • What we're doing now to staff up, from local recruiting and in-house training to outsourcing and hiring out-of-town or overseas;
  • Identifying the skills, job titles and qualifications of desirable candidates, employees and vendors;
  • Workshops, trainings and other programs that most or all of us can get behind in order to solve our business needs.

We'll have an open bar and cocktails will be served.

It is also a private event. Those who qualify to attend include sponsors of any of the Drupal job fairs we've had, and any companies and organizations who host Drupal meetups, trainings or other Drupal community events.

Hosting a meetup at your office qualifies you for this event. Buying pizza at a meetup, while appreciated, does not. If you do not meet the above qualifications, contact us at jobs-jan28summit@droplabs.net with a request to attend.

Thanks to everyone who's

christefano's picture

Thanks to everyone who's expressed interest and signed up to sponsor the job fair! We've updated the page here to show our current sponsors and exhibiting companies:

   http://groups.drupal.org/node/275138#current-sponsors

Our event is in less than 2 weeks and there's still time to get ready.

If anyone has questions not answered here, post a comment below or contact us at jobs-jan28jobfair@droplabs.net or at http://droplabs.net/contact

For remote participants, what is the best way to evaluate the available positions for the exhibiting companies?

The best bet is to check the

christefano's picture

The best bet is to check the official page often to see which companies and organizations are sponsoring and exhibiting and match your location, interest, etc.

   http://groups.drupal.org/node/275138#current-sponsors

At the time of this writing, CivicActions, KWALL, Achieve Internet, Blake Senftner, MJD Interactive, Filter Digital and Exaltation of Larks are sponsoring and exhibiting, and we're very excited to have them at our event.

ps. Full disclosure, I'm one of the founders of both Exaltation of Larks and Droplabs. Every sponsor listed above, including Exaltation of Larks, is a paid sponsor of this event.

Just a quick reminder to all

christefano's picture

Just a quick reminder to all the job seekers at this week's job fair to be proactive and get in touch with the employers and recruiters who were at the event. It may help you get to the head of the line if you contact them before other job seekers do, or before the employers reach out to you.

Heck, even if you didn't come to the job fair, check out who's hiring and get in touch anyway:

   http://groups.drupal.org/node/275138#current-sponsors

Finally, if you haven't updated your Drupal.org and LinkedIn profiles, do it now! Demand for Drupal is growing, but unless you won the lottery and have an agent working on your own behalf you are always going to be your own representative.

Full disclosure: the company where I work was one of the sponsors. I'm encouraging everyone to give all the companies and organizations who sponsored and exhibited equal attention and kudos for attending and supporting Drupal in the Los Angeles area.

Thanks again to all the

christefano's picture

Thanks again to all the companies and individual sponsors who are actively supporting Drupal in Los Angeles and sponsored this week's Drupal job fair!

   • CivicActions, KWALL, Achieve Internet, MJD Interactive, Exaltation of Larks, FilterDigital and Blake Senftner

We'll be having another one of these soon we'd love to have feedback from job seekers as well as employers regarding their experience. We'll be sending out an email shortly with a link to our survey.
