Behat Overview and Real World Examples

Behat is an easy-to-use BDD (Behavior Driven Development) tool allowing users to create quick and powerful behavior tests. What makes Behat especially easy is that test are written in natural language such as "Given I am on /user" and "When I press Log in". Extending Behat tests to include custom functionality is easy both through the use of Object Oriented Features and Extensions.

One powerful extension for use with Behat is Mink. Mink gives Behat the ability to control headless browsers or browser controllers such as Selenium, Goutte, Sahi or Zombie.js directly within your BDD tests. This makes frontend testing just as easy as backend testing. See Watchdog magazine's Behat and Mink article for more on the subject.

Behat is the brainchild of Konstantin Kudryashov and supports a growing community of 40+ contributors. Behat is seen as a rising star for Drupal testing with the Drupal.org project having committed to using Behat. With Drupal 8 including partial Symfony 2 framework integration and Symfony 2's native integration layer for work with Behat, Drupal developers are taking a much closer look at the framework as the future opportunities for easy repeatable BDD tests within Drupal are growing.

Daniel McDermott (@dannymacom) is a freelance Drupal Developer based out of Ventura, CA. He currently works with Exaltation of Larks. His current area of focus is Behat, Vagrant, Drupal Commerce and all-you-can-eat sushi.

We're soliciting additional presentations and lightning talks for this meetup. If there's a topic that you'd like give a presentation on, please leave a comment below. Likewise, if there's a topic that you'd like to learn more about, you're welcome to make a request in the comments below. Thank you!

Raffle prizes! Collect them all! Must be present to win! (Some may be available for remote attendees).

Raffle prizes at this meetup have been provided by Exaltation of Larks. Our raffle prizes often include discount codes, magazines, DVDs, books and tickets to attend professional, paid Drupal trainings. We are always grateful to our sponsors for their continued support.

If you have any items you'd like to donate to the raffle, please contact any of the organizers at the meetup. Thank you!

About High Performance Drupal

What is the High Performance Drupal meetup about? The "high performance" part of the name is a catch-all to describe Drupal scalability, performance and benchmarking but we also discuss hosting, infrastructure, deployment, monitoring and highly repeatable processes.

Also, this meetup has been held at coffeeshops in the past and the addition of caffeine makes our meetings feel as if they go faster and faster as the night goes on.

We've been meeting regularly since April, 2011, in a variety of locations in and around Los Angeles, including Mar Vista, Santa Monica, Culver City and Downtown Los Angeles.

California Drupal Travelers Program

The High Performance Drupal meetup organizers proudly participate in the California Drupal Travelers Program and can host businesses and community members who are visiting the area. Inquire within by contacting any of the High Performance Drupal meetup organizers.

We have time for another

christefano's picture

We have time for another presentation or a handful of lightning talks. Does anyone have ideas, requests or offers?

How about a Drupal After Dark venue? In the past we've gone to Ugo's more often than not. For happy hour before the meetup, we've gone to Kay & Dave's. Does anyone have any ideas or preferences?

Happy Hour and After Dark

mwrather's picture

I'm really excited about the presentation on Behat, and about the topic of Behavior Driven Development in general.

But let's get to the real stuff: The drinking and carousing.

Happy Hour
I'm going to go to Kay and Dave's at around 5pm and grab a table for the Drupal inclined. They are located at 9341 Culver Blvd in Culver City [map], just a minute or two from Filter. They feature $3 margaritas, dollar tacos, and all the chips and salsa you can eat. Best parking is in the city structure next to Trader Joe's (2 hours free), and we can caravan to the meetup around 6:45.

Drupal After Dark
For afterwards, I'd like to put in a strenuous vote against Ugo, which is at best mediocre and is rarely at its best. Tuesday night, Fords Filling Station has $6 cocktails till close, and has a menu of BBQ worth writing home about. Sounds good, right? But we can decide that on the day.

My vote is for Ford's. They

My vote is for Ford's. They made me a great mojito last time I was there with you — extra everything, no sugar, light ice. Just the way I like it.

Is there longer-term parking anywhere nearby that you can recommend so that we can carpool from happy hour, or will we all need to caravan?

Let's go to Fords

oseldman's picture

I agree with you about Ugo's and have been ready for something different for a while. I just drove past the Filling Station yesterday and thought it might be worth trying out, so let's do it. Thanks for suggesting a plan for tomorrow.

See you there.

Behat is something I've heard

Techivist's picture

Behat is something I've heard of & is on my (long) list of stuff to take a peek at & see if I'd like to put into use in my own, daily workflows. Every snippet I've read about Behat just keeps making it sound cooler & cooler.

I'd like to help/assist with co-organizing this event. If there's anything I can do to, for example, get the word out & get some attendees from outside of the Drupal sphere (lotsa folks in LA who are open source techies but aren't in our Drupal cirlces), please let me know. I can help out w/anything, that's just the first thing I thought. ;)

Hi everyone, Dan's

christefano's picture

Hi everyone,

Dan's presentation on Behat is tomorrow night around 8pm (Pacific). If you're planning on attending via WebEx, please make sure that your WebEx software is installed.

Here's a test meeting that you can join about an hour before the meetup begins, which will prompt you to install the WebEx software:

To everyone else, we'll see you at the meetup at 7pm or hopefully earlier for happy hour!

Carpool from Droplabs?

Impboy's picture

Hey, Christefano! Justin here. Figured I'd inquire as to whether or not the carpool is still going on from Droplabs and if so, when it's leaving. Thanks!

I'm on the Westside this

christefano's picture

I'm on the Westside this afternoon and won't be offering a ride — unless anyone happens to be in Santa Monica. Mo is in the area, though, and is arranging a carpool from Droplabs.

Carpooling

MoBot's picture

Hi Justin; we will be doing a carpool tonight. Let's converge at 4:00pm to leave Droplabs as soon as possible. Westside traffic might be nightmarish, so we'll need to get an earlier start to get to Happy Hour at a decent time.

Sweet Mo! Christefano had

Techivist's picture

Sweet Mo! Christefano had mentioned the carpool to me from Droplabs yesterday but his plans changed so I'm glad you're able to provide a carpool. Justin's here also now, so there's 2 of us ready to carpool.

I was gonna add that I don't think we need to leave that early (now), I know all the shortcuts to avoid traffic, if I do say so myself. :)

I'd heard of both Mosh & Boxen, but like my original reply to the Behat topic, they're also something I haven't had time to really explore/evaluate.

In other words, YES! Present on all of 'em hehe!
