October Meetup?

Events happening in the community are now at Drupal community events on www.drupal.org.

Hey everyone,

Our last meetup was in August, and since we decided to meet every other month, we are due for a meetup this month. Go ahead and chime in on a possible date and location. Also, any suggestions for topics or presentations are always welcome.

Thanks!

Features

No suggestions on time/place.

But on suggestions for topics. I'd love to talk about features/spaces/context -- my new passions. I've been helping BYU build their new campus-wide calendar. It's not quite ready for primetime but you can see it here: http://calendar.byu.edu/

We're building the calendar and each of the other pieces that'll make up the site as "features". (read more about features from notes taken from the last BYU drupal meetup -- https://island.byu.edu/drupal/content/drupal-meeting-2009-10-01#comment-...). These features we'll be releasing on BYU's own feature server (no ETA for that quite yet).

Anyways, there's a lot to like about features/spaces/context and I'd love to share some of the things I've learned.

i'm interested

I've been working on building BYU's Fine Arts College's new Drupal 6 website. I'm interested in meeting and sharing info. A calendar is on my list, so I am interested in learning about what Kyle is doing.

Depending on interest, I can share a bit of what we've been doing on our site. We have a great team of designers working collaboratively with me (the only programmer, as of yet). Programming-wise, I've just created an integrated jcarousel / shadow box viewer and created a mega dropdown menu module.

Certainly Needed for Our BYU Group

Whether or not you present to the Utah group, I hope you will present (in detail) to the BYU Drupal group. After meeting with Don Powell about the project, I've been wanting to see how you implement those mock-ups! Have you joined up with the BYU Drupal group on Island yet? That's where we can coordinate a Fine Arts site show-and-tell.

We are meeting twice a month as BYU Drupal developers to cooperate on mutually beneficial projects, as well as community assistance and training.

Don told me he was talking to someone. That must be you. I've joined the BYU Drupal group. I'd be happy to show what I've doing. I'd also really like to learn what everyone else is doing.

Me me!

Thanks for initiating this discussion...I'd definitely be interested in a meet-up. I'm hoping we can have it a little closer to Salt Lake, or even in Salt Lake this time around to accommodate some of us up here. I know there are few, but hopefully we can have some sort of compromise.

As far as when, I'll leave it up to everyone else to decide. I have class on Tuesday and Thursday nights till 7:00pm, so those nights are rough for me and my family. I'll do what I can though.

As far as what should be discussed, I think we should just keep throwing out ideas. Kyle's idea sounds really interesting, and if Lara has some thing to share then let's do it! The more interesting things the better! If I had something interesting then I would share it, but I've been doing a lot of design lately and less Drupal. :(

Anyone play much with D7? I

Anyone play much with D7? I don't know if there is much to talk about but would be nice to hear some of the fancy new features.

I've been following the

kyle_mathews's picture

I've been following the development fairly closely and download releases every so often to check out the changes. I could do a short intro as well about the coming changes.

Since you've been following

amariotti's picture

Since you've been following it can you tell me why I can't install the latest dev version? I get the following error after putting in my database info through my webhost:

In order for Drupal to work, and to continue with the installation process, you must resolve all issues reported below. For more help with configuring your database server, see the Installation and upgrading handbook. If you are unsure what any of this means you should probably contact your hosting provider.

Failed to connect to your MySQL database server. MySQL reports the following message: SQLSTATE[42000]: Syntax error or access violation: 1231 Variable 'sql_mode' can't be set to the value of 'TRADITIONAL'.

Are you sure you have the correct username and password?
Are you sure that you have typed the correct database hostname?
Are you sure that the database server is running?

Let me know.... if I need to use an older version then also let me know. I just went to the Drupal project page and downloaded the most recent dev on that page. Thanks!

I had the same problem...

jeremyr's picture

I had the same problem two days ago. I thought it was me or the configuation of the server, just on the local network running Fedora.

I tried their suggestion about enable some things in the php.ini file, still no luck. But I have an older version running just fine under a hosting account. Wonder who broke it... :)

If you want to meet in Salt

j_ten_man's picture

If you want to meet in Salt Lake, we're more than happy to host in the Walker Center again right in the middle of downtown Salt Lake.

Not sure what I'd be interested in hearing about. I am up for most anything. I haven't done much calendar work, but another guy I work with has done tons. He did a huge integration into Google Calendar and a way to schedule appointments and so forth. I am not sure all of the details though. He might have some good insights into calendars if we talk about that.

I would definitely be

amariotti's picture

I would definitely be interested in hearing about the Google Calendar integration stuff. We're in the middle of testing Google Apps at the DATC and are taking into account the ease of integration into other systems (including our website). See if he'd be interested in presenting...

Andrew (amariotti)

I'd be fine focusing on

kyle_mathews's picture

I'd be fine focusing on spaces/features/context. The other guy could go first and I could just introduce our calendar project in light of how we're using features et al to aid its development.

Kyle Mathews

spaces/features/context would

jtsnow's picture

spaces/features/context would make for an interesting discussion. I think it is a great concept, but there are several problems with how it is currently implemented (upgrade paths, performance, ease of use...)

I heard a lot about D7 at the last DrupalCon, so I may be able to contribute some information there.

Also, I've done quite a bit of work with Apache Solr, including integration with CCK and Views 3, if anyone is interested in that as a topic.

I'd love to see what you're

kyle_mathews's picture

I'd love to see what you're doing w/ Solr / Views 3. I've been using Solr for quite awhile and am looking forward to the new possibilities Views 3 will open up.

So we've figured out what,

webchuck's picture

So we've figured out what, let's talk about when and where... Here are some polls. Polls are very limited for communication, but feel free to leave comments to start a discussion...

Also, I'm not opposed to

jtsnow's picture

Also, I'm not opposed to holding this in early November, if that works better for people. It would give us more time to plan and get the word out.

I'll be out of town Oct 26th-28th.
