Whats this about?

We are organizing a group of people who will arrive in Portland early to go hike Mt Hood.

The Plan

  • Arrival: I (and others) will arrive in Portland on Thurs May 16th
  • Accomodations: TBD. But most likely this cabin or similar.
  • Day Activities: Heavy duty hiking
  • Night Activities: Beer, steak, and Drupal
  • Costs: If we fit four people into the previously mentioned cabin, the rental costs will be ~$150 per person for the entire 3 nights. Plus we will need food, drink, incidentals, etc. Budget around $300 or so.
  • Departure: We depart for Portland proper Sunday morning.
  • Who can come: More the merrier. We can always rent more cabins. We can arrange rides from the airport together etc.

What you need to do

Post below to show interest. Tell us the following:

  • When are you going to arrive?
  • Do you want to stay in a cabin with someone?
  • What is your favorite beer? Yes, you will be judged :)
  • Also, help us spread the word! Tweet, email this link to all your Drupal-buddies (drupaddies?)!

Hiking Trails

This is all subject to change, but my plan is to hike mostly day-trails. 10 miles and less.To get a good idea of cool trails, check out http://alltrails.com/search?q=mount+hood%2C+or

MT. Hood Hiking

Count me in for sure.

I'm flying in Thursday May 16th. Would like to stay in a cabin with others, I call dibs on the most comfortable bed. Favorite beers are Guiness, Stella, Corona and I have even started to like regular Budweiser (go ahead and judge me idc).

Can't wait! Gonna be a trail of a good time.

Excited!

I'll be in PDX already when you all arrive; moving there April 1. I'd have no problem staying in a cabin, although if I can find a way to get back and forth each day from my place downtown, then I'd prefer to do that. Left Hand Milk Stout, Old Rasputin, [insert random coffee/bitter stout/porter here] - anything except American 'light' [lite] pillsner.

this is going to be an awesome weekend!

I Think I Can

JCL324's picture

Totally into this mind/spirit, just don't know about the body/feet :p If there are others in my boat, maybe we could have another group that just does "light duty" hiking for part of the day and drink beer the other part! And of course we should only be drinking Portland/Oregon beer - I'm sure there is something for everyone.

I think I can, too

I am in the same boat as JCL324 ... would definitely like "light duty" hiking.

Gaaaahhh!

You're killing me with this talk. I would love to do this. Hiking? Beer? Drupal? Just pick one and you've got me interested. I'm just not seeing how I can swing it with my schedule and budget.

Don't write me completely off, though, at least until you've reached your limit of participants. I'll try to figure something out.

Or make it easy for me and throw a Drupal job or two my way. That would probably work, at least on the budget part.

Hey y'all! I'm a co-worker of

Hey y'all! I'm a co-worker of Dustin's, and I'd love to join y'all in the cabin. If we can confirm that the cabin has decent wifi so that I can work from there on Friday, count me in!

Hi,

I met some of you at Drupal Camp Florida last year, but I can't make it this year. I saw the posting on Drupal Fit, but it seems like everything's being organized here - I'm in, especially with wifi!

Hey Jeff, I remember meeting

mherchel's picture

Hey Jeff,

I remember meeting you. I think you were about to run a marathon (if I remember correctly)! Anyway, if so, you're going to leave us out-of-shape people in the dust.

Glad to have you onboard though! Pretty soon, we'll need to split into two cabins.

Also, this event is going to be posted to the Drupalcon website on Tuesday, so we should have a number of additional people interested!

looks excellent

cYu's picture

Saw the post in the DrupalFit group and would love to join. I'll be moving to Portland in April and when my body isn't actively protesting I count hiking among my favorite activities. Depending on when my co-workers fly into Portland and if I'm on transport duty I may bail sometime on Sunday, but if there is a spot for me, count me in.

Hey cYu, Definitely! Chances

Hey cYu,

  • so we arrive in portland on wednesday, 15th of april.
  • the two of us would be happy to join a cabin with others.
  • my favorite beer is villacher, i'll see if i can bring some. otherwise i'll just trust your taste folks :)

my understanding is that one cabin is already mostly filled. please let me know if there is a cabin where we could join in or just let's add another one if people are interested.

greetings from Vienna,
dasjo

Hey Dasjo & Klausi! Awesome!

mherchel's picture

Hey Dasjo & Klausi!

Awesome! You're right that we'll probably need to get another cabin. That being said, I just did a quick search and there are plenty available.

roxy317, JimSmith, jefflinwood, cYu, dasjo, and klausi: Can all you guys email me your email addresses and skype usernames? Email me at mike@herchel.com. Put "Drupal Hiking" in the subject.

We'll have to all get in touch and figure out the 2nd cabin situation (who's going to front the money, and how to collect payment).

Email me your info!

Hello Drikers (Drupal +

mherchel's picture

Hello Drikers (Drupal + Hikers = Drikers)!

Chris Yu has graciously agreed to reserve the 2nd cabin. He is going to attempt to get one close to the first cabin, and reserve it ASAP.

In order to do this, he wants at least confirmations from two other people that they will split the cost with him. He is also looking at reserving the cabin from Wednesday - Sunday (as opposed to Thurs - Mon).

(Note: The first cabin is booked up with Mike Herchel, Dustin Cooper, Erik Baldwin, John Learned, and Derek Deraps - so you guys don't need to respond to this)

The cost for the 2nd cabin will be in the neighborhood of $150 - $250 per person, depending on the number of people and the cabin reserved. We'll also have to organize transportation afterwards.

So, at this point, we need Klaus, Josef, Jeff, and Roxann to email everyone or post here and let us know if you're committing to this. Also, note if you're interested in renting the cabin Wednesday through Sunday.

I'm getting EXCITED!

I'm still on the edge but

Sounds awesome. I just wish I'd known sooner as I'm landing in Vancouver on the 17th.

second cabin booked

cYu's picture

I've booked http://www.mthoodrentals.com/Unit.mvc/Details/71163 with check-in on Wednesday 5/15 at 4pm and check-out on Sunday 5/19 at 11am.

Total cost for the cabin was $640. With the 4 confirmed that means the cost will be $160 a person. There is a bed available for 1 more, which would bring the cost to $128 a person if one of the maybes turns into a yes. I'm sure we could squeeze a person or two in on a couch if they wanted, which would drop the cost further.

I'll be driving up with dasjo and klausi on Wednesday. If anyone from the other cabin wants to come up on Wednesday as well, there should be extra space for that night and then you could switch over.

Jeff, you'll have a bed when you arrive on Friday. Mike has offered up his space for you on Sunday night if you want to switch cabins and stay another day.

Should be a pretty awesome little Drupal retreat, looking forward to it.

mherchel's picture

I booked a rental minivan from Thursday 2pm - Sunday 10pm. I believe that Dustin, Erik, John, & Derek are riding with me (correct me if I'm wrong).

Dustin and I are getting into the airport at around 2pm Thurs. So, that means that Erik, John, & Derek will need to meet up with us at the Hertz Rental Car place at 2:45 or so.

From there, I figure we can hit up a walmart or something on the way up to the cabin to get beer, steak, and supplies.

Total cost of the rental van is $144. Assuming a bit of money for gas in the mountains, its going to be around $40-$60 each depending on who's riding and how far we travel for our hiking.

Also, I opened up this thread

mherchel's picture

Also, I opened up this thread on PortlandHikers.org to try to figure out what trails would be best that time of year.

A local

I live in the Columbia River Gorge, about an hour from Portland and on the opposite side of Mt Hood from your cabin. Many of you may not realize how much hiking terrain is still covered by snow out here in May. Most trails high on Mt Hood do not melt and dry out till August in a normal year, and our snowpack is pretty close to normal this year in the immediate area. But down here near sea level, they are opening up a lot now.

I'm about an hour and a half drive from your cabin, but we have more snow-free trails and more brewpubs out this way (Hood River and White Salmon). So maybe you will want to head out this way one day and I can take you on some hike. We can see how the snowmelt is going as it gets closer as well as what you want to do. This area is waterfall capital of the 48 states (in contention with Hawaii over the top spot overall).

Hey DRM, I got your PM on the

mherchel's picture

Hey DRM,

I got your PM on the PortlandHikers forum. Thanks for the info, and I'm definitely down to meetup- especially with a local who knows the area a bit more.

I love the idea of doing some snowshoeing around timberline lodge. I'm from Florida, so you can imagine that I've never done that before. :)

What type of clothes should we pack, buy, or rent?

I can't speak for everyone, but I'm pretty sure that we'd be willing to travel a bit for some good hiking. We're already heading across the US (and some of us across the ocean)!

Do you mind emailing me your information (email, phone, etc) to mike@herchel.com? we have a Google doc set up with everyone's contact info so we can all keep in touch.

Thanks!

Mt Hood

kstuart's picture

Hi all,
I want to hear all about the hiking. I am going to Mt Hood the weekend following the conference. I am doing it a bit more upscale (wine instead of beer) but would love to know about the trails and activities there.
Thanks

Arriving the 17th

tammo's picture

Hi,

Jan and I are arriving from Holland at PDX on the 17th, 11:35 AM. Is there any chance of participating in a hike and a beer? We mainly drink Dutch beers or Belgian (the best in the world, as far as we are concerned), but willing to try others (or wine)....

Tammo

KStuart: Definitely! We'll

mherchel's picture

KStuart: Definitely! We'll post up some good stuff. But, keep an eye on the trip reports on http://www.portlandhikers.org. They get updated pretty often and have the best info.

Tammo: Definitely come on up! Are you planning to come up for a day hike , or do you want to stay overnight? (if you stay overnight, you'll have to contribute toward the cost of the cabin) I know that there are a couple people getting in on Friday, so you won't be alone.

Either way, be sure to get up to go hiking/beering with us. The cabin is less than 2 hours away from Portland. I don't know the exact address of it, but its near http://goo.gl/maps/iiGr7 ...to give you an idea.

Email me at mike@herchel.com with your email address, phone #, twitter and I'll add you to our contact list.
