Should non-english posts be promoted to the frontpage?

We encourage users to post events happening in the community to the community events group on https://www.drupal.org.

I think that as the homepage receives a global traffic its content should be english only.
If we had several languages in the frontpage it would probably drive all the traffic away from the frontpage.

What do you think?

Case of Study

DevElCuy's picture

We have a multi-language page in g.d.o already: http://groups.drupal.org/local-user-group-organizers, let's see how the traffic goes there.

Now, does the traffic matters more than being a representative g.d.o? I'm expecting that 2010 will be the year for explosion of Drupal communities in Asia, Latin America, etc, etc, (yes, those unknown regions hidden in the news map). Do you want this exiting news outside the frontpage?

Another example, when I have suggested to rename the group Español to Spanish, some people say me that I was discriminating those who don't speak English. I was just following a rule, but was an opportunity to know how people feels about this topic.

English or bilingual posts?

juan_g's picture

I think English or bilingual posts for the front page should be just a recommendation rather than a strict norm. When a non-English post is promoted to the front page, the author could be advised to add an English translation to the original text, and this should be seen as available from the post summary, at least with a link. At this moment, all current front page posts are in English or bilingual.

We have a common requirement that group titles be in English, but I think all other content can be in any language.

I think front page posts should ideally be bilingual with English and the language for the group. Approximately 50% of the site visitors are from countries where English is a dominant language (US, India, UK, Canada). So, in respect to the other 50% of the site visitors and as a way to make people who don't speak English feel like this site is for them too, I think it makes sense that the front page has content in other languages.

Translations

Maybe we could use in future some kind of "translate this" button with automatic translation. I would use this function :)
