Quiet around here

MichaelP's picture

Hi socialtalker. Not much going on round here as yet. Perhaps between us we can get the ball rolling.

I am interested in setting up a local food coop site something like the good people at http://www.localfoodcoop.org/ have done. We have local and not so local suppliers who offer their stuff and we have a 15 day buy cycle.

When I get a moment (I an looking at this on a volunteer basis as a coop member) I would like to see if I could knock something up in Drupal (Ubercart) and add all the niceties of a CMS/Social Network (Calendar, Seasonal Recipies, Articles...).

Any discussion on the subject would be much appreciated.

Michael.

CSA talk

forestmars's picture

Melissa M (http://groups.drupal.org/user/59756) who is working in Drupal with a CSA gave a great talk at the Drupal NYC meetup this week.

Somewhat surprisingly, I didn't see some of the Drupalers from local co-ops that often attend this meetup, possibly due to late notice, but it was a great good talk with some excellent Q&A afterward.

If you are working using Drupal for a food co-operative type organisation I would definitely recommend talking to Melissa about her experience with this.

Drupal, Food Co-ops and CSAs

Bay Ridge Food Lover's picture

The Bay Ridge Food Co-op has recently created a CSA as we continue building our organization. We have just rolled out the website for it.

The Yellow Hook CSA is a simple Drupal site.

And we are now turning our attention to create both a public facing, interactive website and a collaboration space to replace our current site. We are working together with other co-ops both existing and developing to maximize our limited resources.

A couple Drupal Food Co-op sites:

Not co-ops, but related, both the Cooperative Grocers' Information Network & Food Co-op Initiative:

Is a list of co-ops & csa sites worthy of a wiki page?

+15 co-op Drupal sites

I decided to really take stock of who's using Drupal.
What they do with the blue is mixed.

Some of these joints have put together strong themes and solid site organization.
I imagine there's some cross-pollination and sharing to be had.

Arbella. Local Food Coop Shop in Catalan Pyrenees, Spain

MichaelP's picture

Can't see much from an anonymous users look at the site (http://www.arbella.cat), as yet.

We are using a more or less bog standard Ubercart and Acquia prosper theme installed from the http://drupal.org/project/uberdrupal profile to run a local coop shop with a 15 day order cycle. (Orders close on a Thursday night, are available to producers from Friday, delivery and order picking done on a Tuesday by coop volunteers. Each member then picks up their order and squares the balance).

Using marketplace for producers, but may change that in the near future.

We have a very modest grant now to add more functionality to the site, which I should be doing soon. Our wish list includes:

Member account balance integration. (Currently using excel!). Looking at http://drupal.org/project/balance_tracker.
Order some produce by decimal weight (of kilo) amounts.
Paypal
Globally restrict "add to cart" to days when producers have updated their catalogue and before orders are closed for preparation.
Improve add to cart for orders - repeat last order.. etc (all a bit clunky at the moment).
And lots more

I'll check back as we progress.

@LP thanks for the very interesting links above!

CSA & Drupal Educational Program

tricon's picture

Our farm is launching a new non-profit with a focus on farm / ranch education and science. We are very interested in putting together a series of educational courses for farms, ranches, and others who are engaged with running or participating in a CSA. Obviously our courseware content will be built around Drupal. D7 is probably the best ground to build upon don't you think?

The question that we have for you all is how should we collaborate in building our courseware content? We'd like to find a couple of serious partners as well as a collaborative medium that transcends this forum. Ideas? Comments? Concerns?

CSA's and Co-op's

farmerphil's picture

Our CSA is getting organized in 2011, yet we have realized from the outset that we want to make sure that we build the needed Drupal functionality to support a whole diet CSA. This mission is heavily tied to the co-op concept. We look forward to learning from you all on this.

Here is aposting from our other CSA discussion which goes into our direction and how we plan on giving back to our various Drupal communities.

Our approach has been to study Drupal 6.X and 7.0 to make sure that we have a list of the most important functions and features that CSA's and farms need for 2 key areas. The first is community services and the second is operational farm tools. We will be making a white paper available soon and will alert you once it is done and available.

Last year, we got set up using 6.X as it was production-ready. Now, we are planning our Drupal 7 (D7) upgrade. When we launch we will notify you all.

Our farm (Flintlock Farm) and non-profit (The Lost Arts Collaborative) have a mission related to helping other CSA's, farms, and Lost Art communities. So, if you need guidance please let us know.
