This is very excellent news. I haven't had a chance to look through changes, but will do so today for sure. I've been holding on two sites for this release (I hope).
There were alot of addin things mentioned over the past few weeks that sure will improve the previous version, not that it was that bad.
I'm printing off the upgrade instructions as I write.

I am about to try out the new release right now.
The biggest problem I have with open publish is that it does alot of things slowly at least on my machine.
To install it I had to change how long a script can take to install to over an hour.
When Installing modules as well, it takes alot of time and editing views as well.
Hope this new version deals with these issues.
There are significant changes
There are significant changes to the installation profile that should not require those long install times anymore. THings are broken up a bit to be done in smaller pieces. However, as far as editing views, etc. that is not an OpenPublish thing, that is a Drupal thing. Good luck with thew new release, let us know how it goes for you.

I am so busy today with my studies that I won't get time to test (and taste) the new OP today/tomorrow. Would overwriting an existing installation be okay? I will first backup my existing DB and the installation folder, of course.
Or, should I install a new instance and then import the DB? I've done some minor changes in the views, but everything else is left as is. Thanks in advance!

Just overwriting will only take you so far.
Take a look at update suggestions at: http://groups.drupal.org/node/38924 There are some things you will have to do.
I would highly recommend to install a fresh installation in parallel and see what has changed, so you can compare, even if you will end-up unpacking on top of the existing installation.

Drupal, in general is very
Drupal, in general is very resource-intensive, especially as soon as you start installing modules on top of it. And shared hostings limit server resources extensively so shared hosting is definitely not a recommended solution. You are much better off going with one of the cheaper VPS solutions like http://slicehost.com or http://linode.com
That said, we've had reports of even older versions of OpenPublish being successfully installed on some shared hosting providers and the installer of the 1.6 version has been specifically tuned to avoid problems on limited-resource servers, so it's worth a shot. Please do let us know how it goes, if you try.
