Allow video upload and conversion to "FLV"

Events happening in the community are now at Drupal community events on www.drupal.org.

I would have loved if by default we could upload any type of video (MPEG, MOV etc) and let the system convert the video to FLV.

Wouldn't it be better to use to use the "FlashVideo" module or even use the Media Mover solution with SWF Tools?

In our experience, Flashvideo module still has a lot of issues and I am not sure if it's really ready for a major, production deployment. Additionally, as you know, you can't do format conversion within Drupal, you need something like FFMPeg, so even if we do include FlashVideo in OpenPublish, people will have to know how to properly set up FFMpeg. It's not a realistic expectation, in most cases. Then there's a fact that it's a very bad idea to serve large media files, like video, from your web-server. You'd have to host videos on something like Amazon S3. The list of problems goes on...

Bottomline: it's too much of headache and, in our experience, most people end-up just using a third-party service instead. Pretty much nobody tries to do conversion using FlashVideo, even people who do host their own video have production teams preparing videos in FLV and uploading those.
