Setting up a new site under multisite and building it PRIOR to changing the DNS listing for the previous version of the site

Hello All,

There is probably a very simple answer to this that I am overlooking; but here goes.

I have taken over managing an existing live site (delucchielectric.com) and need to start working on its replacement.

I've started a hosting account at Arvixe and setup Drupal at a 'dummy' domain and have configured and gotten multisite up and running. A second domain is already running in multisite under that dummy domain.

So here is my problem, I have created the directory and database files for delucchielectric.com at Arvixe, but how do I access them without changing the DNS for delucchielectric.com from the old host to the new?? Reminder I need site to keep up and running at the old host while the new site is being built.

Thanks,
Mike

Setting up a new site under multisite

Hi:
What do I suggest is first to build a subdomain in the multisite (what you really need).
Make all the tests and when you are sure that the subdomain work fine then you can change all you need: DNS, folder name, etc.

What I've typically done in

What I've typically done in this situation is to set up the site at what will be the final domain name - so delucchielectric.com in this case - but then create a symlink of the site directory with another test domain name or subdomain - like test.delucchielectric.com - and then point that domain name at the test server. Once the site is live, you can remove the symlink and remove or repoint the (sub)domain. Drupal seems to be none the wiser when working with a site directory that's actually a symlink of another site directory.

sites.php

Search for sites.php or look at the example that comes with Drupal. That's exactly what you need.

Setup sites/delucchielectric.com and point test.delucchielectric.com to that server. If you're not using any additional domains, no further action is needed. If you want to have dev.delucchielectric.com and test.delucchielectric.com on the same multisite, then use sites.php.

different hosting companies

Hello All, THANK YOU for the responses ... So I'm reading through these and I'm thinking that symlink and sites will not help be because delucchielectric.com currently points at a totally different hosting company(existing site on homestead; new site on Arvixe) ... am I correct??

Er, well, if your sites are

Er, well, if your sites are using two entirely different Drupal installations, which must be the case if they're not even on servers at the same hosting company, then you don't really have a multi-site installation going on…

Just change your /etc/hosts file

You can add the new hosting IP and delucchielectric.com to your /etc/hosts file and this will have your computer (and only yours) direct to the new site as if it were publicly changed DNS entry.

This is handy for short testing, but not as handy for showing the site to other folks on their own computers.
