OpenPublish Documentation Sources

Events happening in the community are now at Drupal community events on www.drupal.org.

The question about documentation has come up repeatedly. We are continuously working in this regard and there will be increasing number of documentation sources. Meanwhile, following list is the current state of the documentation for OpenPublish:

  1. There's Installation Guide: http://bit.ly/installop
  2. There's installation and configuration screencast. Installation part of that screencast is outdated (was for 1.5) but some of the configuration information is still quite valuable.
  3. Since OpenPublish is a Drupal distribution, solid Drupal knowledge is an absolute pre-requisite. Everything you can do with OpenPublish is how you would do things in Drupal. Good Drupal books are very relevant: http://bit.ly/drupalbooks

There are many good ones, but the ones we especially like are: Using Drupal and Front End Drupal. Pro Drupal Development is a hardcore guide to Drupal development, which is always great, but you probably don't need that unless you are a developer. These are just some of our picks, there're many good books you may like.

  4. We will be hosting an all-day OpenPublish hands-on training at DrupalCon San Francisco. If you are serious about OpenPublish, this is definitely the event of the year to attend: http://sf2010.drupal.org/node/2957. We will also discuss OpenPublish 2.0. which will be released by DrupalCon. Try not to miss it.
  5. This group http://groups.drupal.org/openpublish is our attempt to fill-in any gaps that may still exist with actual interaction with people who are trying to use and implement OP.

Thank you

Suggestion

Here's a suggestion:

Find someone who is really good at writing directions, who understands how to break down technical tasks into "bite-size pieces," who knows how to explain technological tasks in simple, down-to-earth language.

Spend time teaching that person all about OpenPublish: how to install, how to upload, how to create content, how to change CSS, how to make adaptations to templates, how to create themes, how to work with blocks and context and views, etc. Take the time to let that person ask lots of questions and try out ideas.

Once that person has a firm grasp of how OpenPublish works and is comfortable navigating in it and working in it, he/she can then write a series of step-by-step explanations that can be accessed individually ("I just want to find out how the contexts are set up and how to change them") or as a group.

Just a thought.
