Oh my goodness... If you missed the Boulder Meetup this month it was a great one with discussions surrounding Drupal 8 and it's path moving forward. It seems that there are many larger shops that are pushing Drupal in the direction that benefits them most (nothing wrong with this) and in doing so they are leaving out some of the smaller contributors.

That said, it's a great time to jump in and help with contributions to keep the great community driven ecosystem that is the Drupal we all know and love. We will be looking at modules that can be ported to D8 so that on the day it arrives, we will have a large number of Drupal8 modules to choose from.

More specifically, this month we will be looking at DrupalVM and playing with Drupal Console to aid in the learning process and help get over some of the challenges of contributing new code to Drupal.

This is a working session meetup so please bring a laptop.

Food and drinks will be provided by AppliedTrust so come and enjoy!

Yes, it does seem that way doesn't it...and if you're into looking for something in between D8 and D7, you can always give Backdrop CMS a try :)

Here's an article to introduce you: https://drupalwatchdog.com/volume-5/issue-1/build-it-backdrop

And Pantheon even let's you spin up a free site to test with, whaaaa?

I think you are missing an

I think you are missing an important option in your survey...

"I keep hearing everything is different in Drupal 8. I'm going to wait until that is released before learning anything new."

It's a tough time for people who are helping others climb the ladder towards contributing to Drupal as well as people who want to learn Drupal. So much changing.

While D7 will have a long, stable life after D8 is released, really learning D7's hooks and forms now doesn't make much sense. While much of that knowledge could transfer to Backdrop... very little of it transfers to D8 beyond we used to do it like...

The Backdrop project uses a completely different process for contributing, so if you were going to learn enough Drupal to contribute to Backdrop, a large part of what you'd be learning would be how to use GitHub's Pull Requests. PRs are actually much more common and marketable than Drupal's node-number.patch/comment process. So if you are a beginner who is more comfortable with D7 style procedural PHP that can be easily modified with any text editor vs. D8 more complicated looking object oriented code that really requires a full blown IDE to edit, you are probably going to be much happier getting involved in Backdrop on GitHub than trying to stick with D7 on Drupal.org.

I guess you might be missing another option...

"I'm more interested in a Backdrop Ladder Meetup"

Thank you Kevin - I’ve added

Thank you Kevin - I’ve added both of those questions.

The actually goal of the contrib ladder meetups, was to get d7 modules ready for d8, which we may not be relaying well in our "marketing" of the meetups. Also, the backdrop idea, brilliant! :)

Thanks so much for the input.

Hey Kevin,

Do you want to work on a Backdrop ladder thing with me? I've recently looked more into that project and was just thinking about the ladder concept.

I didn't realize this ladder

kreynen's picture

I didn't realize this ladder had a D7 to D8 focus. That is really ambitious since to effectively port projects you'd really need to understand 2 very different frameworks.

@afinnarn I'm happy to help with some type of Backdrop meetup if there is enough interest, but I'm not sure a ladder is the best way to get started. Are you in Boulder?

Ohio I guess

afinnarn's picture

I sort of live in Ohio now, lol (I lurk in a lot of spots...), but yeah, that was my thought on the D7 to D8 ladder as well. Backdrop has a weekly core dev meeting (I'm not a core dev yet persay) in Google hangouts you can find out from @backdropcms, and learn more at https://backdropcms.org/.

You should totally start a Backdrop meetup though! I'm doing it in Cleveland even if I'm the only one there for awhile, lol. I would think a lot of people in the Drupal meetups would be interested in hearing about Backdrop as an option but I haven't broached that topic too much.

My email is alex.finnarn@gmail.com if you want to talk further :)
