User group meeting

This month's Portland Drupal User Group will be next Wednesday, May 10th from 6pm to 8:30pm at Acquia (1120 NW Couch St. Suite 630 Portland, OR 97209).

Food and beverages are hosted by Acquia. We're mixing it up this month. Acquia is providing taco bar catered by Los Gorditos, which is a Mexican restaurant nearby that has vegan/gluten free options. Come at 6pm for food and socializing, and get to know your local Drupal community in a casual welcoming environment.

The presentation will start at about 6:30pm.

Amy Vaillancourt-Sals from ThinkShout will be giving us an encore presentation of her popular DrupalCon talk called Demystifying Rendered Content in Drupal 8 Twig Files. We'll have some extra time after her talk, so come prepared to chat about Drupal front end.

The full description of her talk:

New to Twig? It's a robust and elegant template engine for PHP. Once I started working with Twig, I instantly fell in love with it and here's why: it's lightweight, fairly quick to pick up, and very readable. Not only that, but I feel like I have ultimate control over the markup, including wrapping elements and rendering exactly the output I need. Theming Drupal has never been more dreamy!

If you are new to front-end development in Drupal or a veteran, AND you are ready to take your project’s markup powerfully into your own hands then this talk is for you.

During this session, I will take you through a brief intro into twig, the debugging process of sorting through twig variables using xdebug in PHPStorm, mention other helpful debugging tools at our disposal, and share common patterns I found helpful for rendering content in twig files.

If time allows, I also hope to demonstrate how to use Display Suite, taking your Twig files to exciting new heights.

See y'all next week!

Amy, is part of your presentation setting up D8 for theme development? If not, I could do a quick 10-min walk-through of how to set up your D8 local environment for theme development, after which then Amy could take over and get into the nitty-gritty of debugging Twig variables and using XHProf.

Hi Amber! My talk includes

Hi Amber! My talk includes quite a bit on file name suggestions and very briefly on file structure. A quick 10-min walk-through on D8 local environment theme development setup would be the perfect compliment, if you're willing to do that. Thank you for reaching out and offering to do so!

Great I will plan on it!

Great Amy! I will plan on doing that. That way, if folks are following along, they'll know how to set up their local so that they can see the template name suggestions and which templates are being used when they view source.

I haven't received a response

I haven't received a response from Los Gorditos catering yet and my backup (Portland Pedal Power + Aprisa) is way more expensive than I had budgeted for. So it looks like pizza again tonight, sorry for the bait and switch!
