With 250% growth and an extremely obvious need for change on Drupal.org, we need to assemble a plan for moving forward.
Opening up the analytics will only help professionals consult better on the design of the site moving forward. Google analytics is an excellent free platform that can be shared amongst many users.
A special email list could be started as well to funnel the reports to. Users could then subscribe to this as well.
Any design without doing this is pointless and is going to be stabbing at the dark.
Accounts: Create a google.com/analytics account.

Google Analytics has a performance hit as each hit calls a remote page link. Drupal.org volume traffic would make that hit substantial. I am not sure that Google Analytics is better then the data we currently already have available.
Performance hit is worth the ability to optimize the flow
You are correct that analytics will slow down the site. But we will also get to see how thousands of people navigate through the site and have excellent ability to make concrete improvements to drupal.org.
Take the home page. We have 50 links on the home page, but how many of them get clicked? By tracking the site for one of more days we can make amazing improvement to reduce the time it takes to use drupal.org

There is no performance hit.
Once it gets loaded into the browser it's cached and then it simply pings googles servers. There is almost 0 footprint on drupal to implement it and the data we would be getting back would be astronomical. Further more... It doesn't have to be a permanent installation.

Search:google analytics slow
There's been lots of complaints about Google service. Any information about their service having improved?

What are the complaints specifically?
I've deployed Google Analytics on dozens of sites and never had issue with it.

I also thought the bandwidth
I also thought the bandwidth was in the browser... definitely seems worthwhile at least for a few weeks.
It doesn't connect to Drupal
Everything that Google Analytics does is in the presentation layer. The Javascript that it loads is 7k and is cached.

So are we going to do this?
I have an account and time ready to roll.

I have created the Drupal google analytics account
I have created the account. We tried an experiment to run analytics on just a few pages with blocks but that didn't work. We are going to work with OSUOSL early next week to look at our analytics options.
