OpenPublish for a multi-site installation.
There will be a total of 3 sites on one virtual shared hosting server.
I remember some time back where there were issues using virtual server. I did a competent install of OP on a virtual shared hosting server, which didn't seem to be that big a deal.
My purpose of this is to possible determine if there are problems others might see.
I plan to build one - OpenPublish site, in Cpanel then setup up 2 addtional sites with separate databases, but I will use the same OpenPublish installaton with contributed modules across all three sites. Each of the sites will have it's own separate MySql database.
Mydomain1.com/Apples
Mydomain2.com/oranges
Mydomain3.com/pears
The reason I'm thinking of this is because it takes so long to set up on OpenPublish. I won't need all the module capacity of the OpenPublish across the 3 sites, but the CCK, Views, etc. I am sure will be used a great deal by all 3 sites.
The OpenPublish is still difficult to admin, takes getting used to. This way I can pass off the sites to the owner and updating the 3 sites will be minimalized.
I'm sure there are things I've not thought about. I'd appreciate any thoughts on this.

To be honest, in most cases, I am not a big fan of Multisite. In very rare cases it is truly needed and in most cases it just complicates matters. That said, OpenPublish has most definitely been used in [Drupal] multisite environments, without any major issues.
One possible challenge in your description is - mixing OP and non-OP sites within a multisite. The thing to keep in mind is that all the modules in sites/all/modules and themes in sites/all/themes are by default inherited by all sites in a multisite. And that's where OpenPublish keeps its modules at (for more portability) and you don't want to have to move these modules.
However, this may not be an issue as you will have separate databases and can disable modules selectively on each site. If you do install any additional modules for other sites, you probably want to do that in sites/site.domain.com/modules, though.
Good luck and let us know how it goes.
Thanks

I've stayed away from multisite for over 2 years, but to be very honest I am up to my ears in alligators.
This little non-profit has 3 individual sites they want to migrate respective data to new sites. I thought the OpenPublish should be a quick way to get them up onto 3 pretty well configured media type sites. This project I'm discussing will be OpenPublish on all three sites.
Maintaining sites has become a problem for me, since most of the people I built sites for want upgrades and security done by me.
Currently I am maintaining 19 sites. There are security upgrades almost daily, and it is not uncommon to get several module upgrades a day.
I only do full admin for a few months until the new owners are up to speed.
Separate sites are always best, but since these sites will be on the same virtual host server I thought it might be a way to go that wouldn't add to my workload as much.
I am really looking now at solutions that free up more time. Just trying to keep things moving and have some personal life.
multi-site...
why not try a phased approach.
create a stock MultiSite, get your clients up on that.
create a separate OP site. move the content over in a couple of tests. But keep the OP site stock.
but mixing a OP site with a non OP site... seems like your begging for trouble for no reason.
you can do some custom modifications but you said you had 19 sites and you need to maintain the security. I would keep it as simple and standard as possible.

I am not planning to mix a non OP with an OP.
The sites will be Op only, with separate db for each site.
The sites I currently maintain are a pain, but the way security and upgrades release almost daily.. I'm dealing wtih it.
If I can use multi site OP all I do is upload the upgrades and update for one instance. That will save a lot of time.
The reason I asked about this topic, is my concerns after reading discussions about performance issues with OP.
Then with multi sites accessing the one OP application, will there be caching and other issues.
Interested in Support and Maintenance
Hello domineaux,
I already requested professional service from Phase2 thru their web form and asked them, if they are interested in support and maintaining a new Openpublish and Tattler site for me – unfortunately, I never got an answer.
You already maintain 19 Openpublish sites and I thought maybe you’re interested in this job? If so, please send me an email to gpgroup (at) gmail (dot) com.
Thanks,
Oliver
Sorry, guess I didn't explain
Sorry, guess I didn't explain well enough.
I have a multi-site I am working on that will require 3 OP sites, if I don't do multi-site.
All the sites I maintain are regular drupal sites, along with a couple drupal Ubercart.
I'd love to help you out, but to be very honest... at this time the alligators are eating my lunch and me too.
I will send you an email, but I can't look at taking on another project for 4 to 5 weeks from now.
