2007-11-03 13:00 - 21:00 Pacific/Auckland Help get drupal 6 closer to release. Fix bugs, review patches, play patch bingo, upgrade modules, or just get coffee for the rest of us! :)
Followed by dinner and drinks, perhaps @ the china kitchen? Open to suggestions...
Presentations, demonstrations, discussion topics also welcome. Volunteer or add your ideas on the wiki page.
Add yourself to the wiki page so we can count attendees.
Marek and Stein have offered to communicate with drupal core devs about what areas we should focus on.
Who can arrange and confirm the venue?
Who can arrange tech details for wifi with Brian?
What else are we missing?

Hi Stein! I read that a
Hi Stein!
I read that a while back and commented on it too. You might be interested in some related discussion and a work in progress
I don't think there's anything that needs testing with that particular patch. And it's too late to make major changes for d6 anyway. The markup style guide is something we could push for in d7 though.
Another thing we could discuss is managing legacy code. I'm starting to find many minor issues where drupal is not-quite-right but it's too late to fix because that would require fundamental changes that developers don't want to change. Sometimes not even for d7. I have seen this lead to a couple 'this will do the job' d6 patches that don't solve the underlying problem, but make it disappear -- for now. I expect these issues will be forgotten for d7. I'm concerned this sort of cruft will degrade drupal in the long term -- but I don't have enough experience to know if it matters or not. One prime example is http://drupal.org/node/111719. You probably don't want to read the whole thread, but read from comment #73 through #88 to get the gist of my point -- skip the argument between malex and dvessel.

d6 Hackathon - date issue,
Hey guys,
I would like to point out that Monday, October 22nd, 2007 is 'Labor day', so it'll be three day long weekend that weekend. I am not sure how the rest of you guys, but my family would like to see me go out of Christchurch for three days with them, rather then hacking Drupal with you guys.
Can we discuss this please?
Cheers,
Marek
Yeah I just realized that
Yeah I just realized that too. Maybe we should look at the weekend after? Oct 27?
I don't mind either day. We might have to give Egressive folk and Gold another nudge to see what they think... Brenda/Shiny might come down from the capitol if we do it on the 27th?
Perhaps if we note on the wiki page what our preferences and availability is?

times.
I was also looking at the times...
Is this really starting at 2am?
Woops! Thanks for spotting
Woops! Thanks for spotting that. Do you think you'll join us? What are your date preferences?

So what date do people
So what date do people prefer? We haven't got many attendees yet.... :(

Thanks for the nudge Bevan
I'll talk to Dave about Wifi and tables, chairs etc. at Effusion. I'm sure we can come up with something and we are close to the Twisted Hop and other cafes if we need beer, coffee, etc. I'll need to come up to speed on D6. I'm likely to try porting some modules, and possibly looking at OpenID on Drupal...
Let us pick another weekend?
Thanx to Marek for pointing out that 22 is a xxx-day.
I will be taking my bongo-van the long weekend and go on safari, soooo let us try the weekend after? That would be sat. 27.10
Jonathan. Someting special you want to test on OpenID?

+1
+1 to make it on 27.10
Marek, Stein, Andrew, Josh.
Marek, Stein, Andrew, Josh. Please state what dates you would come on the wiki page so we can work out what's the best date for this. At least Marek and Stein can't make the 20th. Jonathan can't make the 27th. Maybe Nov 3?
Josh; Hi! Please introduce yourself! :)
Bevan/
All good and intro
Any day should be fine for me. I'll usually be able to pop in after 3pm...tho with seniors leaving in a few weeks I'll have some freedom during the day.
Bevan: Have just updated my profile here but the skinny of it: I ran/run ZYPE Limited, helped start the Effusion Group, got all excited about XHTML, CSS, XML, XSL and then decided to become a teacher. I now mess with young people's heads teaching the College of Computing at Hagley Community College. Dave recently showed me Drupal and I started getting down and dirty with theming and PHP.

you can have a hackfest on the 20th AND the 27th
I'd rather have one bigger hackfest
IMO rather have one bigger one than two smaller :)

I guess so
No one has objected, so I would say so. :)
Has anyone at effusion been able to discuss/propose/arrange/confirm venue and/or internet? It'd be good to confirm this so we have time to look for an alternative venue if it doesn't work out.

Effusion hosing hackathon
Hi fellas (any fellettes included?),
The Effusion Group would be pleased to offer facilities and participants for this auspicious event. We've been looking at adding the necessary furniture to our common room - how many developers are we talking about at this stage? By my count, we've got 8 so far: Josh, Bevan, Marek, Stein, Jonathan, Gold, Andrew (Turner?), Dave (me) - any others?
We'll certainly have wireless available - it's just a matter of how we'll organise seating. Will any of you require computing hardware or are you all packin' notebooks?
Cheers,
Dave
Thanks Dave!
Thanks Dave! It seems to be all coming together! You counted 8, but there are only 7 on the wiki. Is Gold coming then?
All;
I just updated the wiki page and re-jigged it a bit.
Add your hardware / furniture needs there if you have any. My 30" dell monitor should have arrived by then which will be useful for demos if need be.
I'm happy to do a short demo or presentation on either debugging with Komodo IDE, or custom themes as sub-themes, but only if there is interest in either topic. Is there?
Do we want to do slightly-formal demos or presentations? How? At the moment there are only one or two. So I suggest we do them at the beginning.
Maybe we want to keep it all informal?
Bevan/
Added my stuff
Hi guys,
I added my stuff to the wiki page.
From my perspective we should keep it as informal as possible :-)
re start time. Noon sounds good to me. Considering we meet at noon and start presentations around 1pm that would leave us probably four, five hours until dinner & beers. That should be enough to hack something together.
Re HW, etc. I am bringing along only my laptop ,so all I need is a plug and wifi connection.
Looking forward to see you all there!

Drupal.org downtime 2 Nov.

I hope everything is OK 3 Nov. NZ-time :)
Regarding what bugs to fix etc. Have contacted some of the main dev. on IRC but getting something special issues from them proved difficult. D6 bugs is a moving target and I think we have to wait until 3 Nov. or?

steinmb: i can find you things to test, things to fix, things to review, and features to build. There's also Bug Bingo and Patch Bingo.
Stuff is falling into place for the 3rd
Hi all,
We've now got two tables, 8 extra chairs, a couch, a fridge, jug, multiboxen, and a WRT54GL (wireless router) to support laptop users.
We expect to have 2-4 Gutsy thin clients available for anyone who wants to come along but doesn't have a lappie (let us know if you'd like to use a thin client - that way we can make sure we have enough!).
Also, we'll make a development server available for people to set up D6 instances...
Cheers,
Dave
Everyone; The hackathon
Everyone;
The hackathon (November 3) is this Saturday.
The infamous chx has organised a similar IRC event for Nov3; http://hojtsy.hu/node/41
Stein and Shiny/Brenda; Many others are simply focusing on 'the queue'. I have a few specific issues and documents I want to work on and develop, but other than that I think 'the queue' makes a lot of sense;
Dave: Cool! Thanks a lot! Do you mean 'Multiboxes' -- as in lots of power plugs? Or is mulitboxen some new gadget I don't know about?
Bevan/
I updated the time to 1pm as
I updated the time to 1pm as that seems to be preferred.
Dave; Will the street-doors be open on a Saturday to gain access to the building?
Bevan/
Hi all, I'll be coming along
Hi all,
I'll be coming along to do some hacking but will be needing a computer. So if you could keep one of those thin clients for me that'd be great.
Cheers,
William.
Confirmation
See you all tomorrow!!
From 1pm @ Effusion.
Dave & Jonathan, please let me know if you want a hand setting anything up. I'm on skype, flick me an email, or 021 1433 129. I look forward to meeting you tomorrow William, and Josh too.
Oh, should I bring my large monitor for group-viewing? I won't need it but it may be useful for demonstrations etc. If I don't hear anything before-hand I'll leave it home as it's bulky to move around...

I set up an IRC channel for us (and future drupal Chch stuff) at #drupalchch on irc.freenode.net. See you there...

Summary
A bit of a report / summary or those that were and weren't there;
Well we didn't as get much done on drupal 6 as we hoped. Marek got a patch in or pg sql support. William submitted a patch or the ile API. Stein reviewed an old patch o mine to node.module which is now RTBC. Andrew did some tests to ind where drupal6 is slow. Marek and Jonathan ound a bug in OpenID module, I think...? Jonathan ound a bug with clean URLs in d6.
I didn't get on to anything or drupal 6, except updating CivicActions' SVN'd repository o the CVS checkout o drupal head/6 rom d.o, and updating my sandboxed sites.
We did however meet and greet, learn how to do this better next time, share ideas etc, and most note-worthy, decide what to do with drupal.net.nz and even implemented hal o it! Thanks everyone, especially Dave and Egressive. :)
Here are some brie notes, beore I orget -- rom discussions with other attendees, about how to improve next time;
These ideas were drawn rom several short and dispersed conversations and don't relect everyone's ideas. So please diss and digg them and share any other ideas.
Oh, we also established that at least 5 o us enjoy mountain biking. Who's on or a ride on Sunday 25 November?
Oh, I nearly orgot. I also decided to implement this little algorithm in uture conversations;
<?phpunction bevan_converse($input) {
$meaning = drupal_evaluate_natural_language($input)
$deinitions = $meaning->deinitions;
if (!($deinitions['python'] == $deinitions['perl'] &&
$deinitions['perl'] == $deinitions['pascal'] &&
$deinitions['pascal'] == $deinitions['pgsql'])) {
// End the discussion.
return '';
}
return drupal_respond_natural_language($meaning, get_variable('bevan_knowledge'));
}
?>
It's or drupal 19 which requires php 12 and mysql 9! :)
Thanks everyone or contributing to a great day! :)
