Lynda.com and SDUG -- Let's Play!

Events happening in the community are now at Drupal community events on www.drupal.org.

Last SDUG was fab! First a vibrant and passionate SandCamp planning meeting and then a very informative session, followed by drinks at the Prado. Thanks KRK and Cristoph for a good meeting.

So we have a wonderful opportunity to create SDDUG Lynda.com training. We would do this as a group, we would spread the Drupal Gospel/KoolAid-drinking word and ultimately provide valuable training to the greater community. For those of you that don't know Lynda.com, they are the premiere online technical training for web & design professionals.

I have a vision of what would work from a project and business-owner side but this is really your project. Is anyone interested in creating and being in a set of SDUG Drupal Training Videos?

  1. Are you interested enough to participate? (won't be hard, I promise!)
  2. What do you know well enough to TEACH (not demo)
  3. What would you like to learn yourself?
  4. Anybody in the group actually an educator/curriculum specialist/writer?

While I am an eternal optimist and will volunteer to coordinate and manage, the topics will be driven from the community. The technical expertise and materials have to be sourced and vetted from our group.

It's a rigorous path to get included into the Lynda.com curriculum but it will set us apart and as the experts in a growing and competitive community. While we are all busier than we might even want to be today, it is this moment that is important for marketing for the future. Marketing during a drought is a sad thing to do.

So send me your feedback about this (and the RFP process too!).

Questions from a potential video maker (Karl)

  • What length will the videos be? That might give us a better idea of topics that can fit into the available space.
  • What's the time commitment, very roughly speaking?
  • This is not possible to be sure about, but what kind of money could one reasonably expect to see / month?
  • I can ask Chris Charlton if he's willing to give us some of that data too, he might know better.

Lynda.com Videos for SDUG is underway!

Susan Rust's picture

Thanks for the feedbacks folks. So here's my opinion about the training at Lynda.com:
*Not deep enough learning
*Can't do anything for 9 hours
*Can't have my team watching 9 hours of training either

I'd love content/topic driven training in 15-30 minute intervals. Like 20 sessions of views but each video has a very specific focus. So my thought was that it could be an 8-hours of video but it would be broken up into 20-30 bite-size videos. This would make it easier to grab-and-learn-and-apply. But also, less taxing for any one person to participate!

Hey Dave / new guy for MN / Catwired.com : you've been conscripted to help develop scripting!
Karl: Curriculum dev for Views
Ron: Writing scripts, working with developers to have a good flow of teachable content.

Hey, how cool! Thanks, waiting to hear from Bill, Rich, Christoph, Kathy and the rest of you...you know who you are :)

I've been on the fence for a

I've been on the fence for a week.

This opportunity is of course right up my alley with it's education/training/evangelization angle. And I have 7 years of software training under my belt, more years than I care to mention providing user support at a very high level, and I'm qualified (and have experience) to teach college classes from community college to grad school levels.

On the other hand I have a demanding day job, Drupal commitments with SDUG and SANDcamp, plus other interests and commitments, and a family.

So in the interest of keeping my energy focused I am going to sit this one out and let others carry the ball. You all have my fullest moral support, and I might be able to provide one-off, swoop-in-and-out type of help.

Sitting on the Fence

Susan Rust's picture

There's a really bad joke one usually learns in second grade about what time it is when an elephant sits on your fence, the answer being it's time to get a new fence...

That said, thanks for giving it careful thought. You can be our random come-whenever-person any time. Perhaps you'd like to be part of the review process when we think we're done and need feedback. That would be a small and finite commitment of time and we can still tap your expertise. Nice job presenting your talents and then taking them away.... ;-D

See you next month, Prado, 5:30 for SandCamp planning.
