Join up and feel free to use this group to discuss the Drupal GHOP Contest. Please introduce yourself to the group by leaving a comment on the Introducing Yourself post and tell us a little about yourself, how you came to the contest and what you are (or would like to) work on.
Talk about the contest can range from questions you may have about how to accomplish certain tasks to observations you have about working with the Drupal community in the course of the contest. This isn't only for participating students but also for students who are just checking this whole thing out and for community members who wish to help by answering questions or brainstorming new task ideas.
If you're interesting in helping to manage the program, please subscribe to the issue updates and check out the notes for admins page.

Required Completion Date
I've chosen to work on a theme for drupal 6. I'm not a great designer, so I'm going to be porting the theme over. It is a 2 column theme which needs to be extended to 3 columns. It's probably going to take around 7 days for me to get this completed due to the extra work. I, like other students, attend school, participate in extra-curricular activities, and hold down jobs (mines freelance drupal development). Since we have such a large number of students who are interested in doing this; I'm going to be focusing on quality of work, and assisting other students when they have questions since I've been working with the drupal project for quite a while.
I've noticed several mentions of 2-5 days to get work completed; is there an issue if we go over this period of time?

If it's an extra day or two it's ok...
And thanks for letting us know.
However, any longer than that and we really ought to be fair and open it up for another student to take a shot. So just do your best to get it done relatively quickly, but don't start failing assignments or dropping out of school for it or anything. ;) Keep us posted on how it's going!
GPL Themes
I was a bit disheartened after finding that the theme I was interested in porting to drupal was released under creative commons. I contacted the developer regarding the license, and he agreed to relicense the theme under GPL. In addition, he relicensed all the themes which he has developed. I'll definitely begin work tomorrow on the theme and should get a large portion completed over the weekend. To verify, the themes are available at http://www.designcreek.com/pages/services/open-source-templates.php (I am using DesignCreek02) with the license clearly stated as GPL.

I think I missed something somewhere...
I clicked on Angie's Google Task Tracker link and got taken to an issue page with no ability to specify the things she said to specify. So now it's in there as a "Defect".

Drupal "Blue Berets"
I don't see a link anywhere that allows me to start a new topic on this group, so I'll suggest this here.
I think GHOP has been a great success and is a fabulous addition to the SOC program. But what happens when it's over? We have a bunch of gung-ho developers who have done a lot for Drupal and have great, fresh ideas.
How about if we borrow on the military idea of an elite fighting force ("Green Berets", "Rangers," etc.). These kids can form a special force whose job is to handle short term projects that have benefit to Drupal, but don't necessarily require long term commitment to the solution. Perhaps we can call them the "Blue Berets?"
I don't know if any kind of reward system could be devised other than everlasting fame within the Drupal community. Perhaps some corporate sponsor might like to step up and offer something (maybe Lullabot?) to encourage continued involvement in Drupal.

Great idea
Not so sure about the name, but I think this is generally a good idea. Except that I disagree with it only being short-term projects; long-term projects have appeal too. As for corporate sponsors... maybe the Drupal Association? If you compare the amount of work being done with the amount of money Google is paying, it's a real bargain for the sponsor.
Even bigger bargain for Drupal
Considering the benefits the Drupal community is getting for little investment, it's an even bigger bargain for Drupal!
I thought the name was kind of cute and hints of an elite "fighting" force, but it doesn't matter what they are called.
Another possible sponsor: the company that bought Bryght (I forget the name).
