User group meeting

I think its about time we had a meetup in Wellington so I want to get an idea of how many people are keen to attend and when/where the event should take place. Depending on how many people are keen to come along will depend the format and formality of the event.

So can I get a show of hands as to how many people are keen for a Drupal Meet-up?

Date, Time TBC.

Josh Waihi's picture

Great, thats plenty of interest for me. I'll talk to Catalyst to see if they'll let us host the even there. If so, we'll have a projector and a meeting room to our disposal. Anyone got topics they'd like to talk about? Maybe showcase some Drupal sites?

I can talk about any of the following (but not all of them):

  • Drupal 7, How to use the new database layer (DBTNG)
  • Contributing to Drupal core and contrib
  • Writing intergration with the Features module
  • Debian packaging Drupal
  • Why you should be using Drush

How does July 8th place for people?

Catalyst IT will sponser the event

Josh Waihi's picture

Great news, Catalyst IT will sponser the event. They'll even throw in some beers, like a true Open Source Meet-up.

Sounds great

Hi, that does indeed sound awesome - i'm totally up for it too (and July 8 sounds good). Have also just spoken with my employer Modica Group and if this turns into a regular event then we could help with hosting and beers too :-)

Sounds great

scott.whittaker's picture

That sounds great Josh. I'm particularly interested in learning more about implementing Features and using Drush - I've been reading up on them for a while now but haven't had a chance to get my hands dirty being stuck working on Drupal 5 projects for the last few months!

8th is good for me too.

7pm on the 8th of July it is. Maybe we'll have 2-3 talks and an open discussion over beer. Will be great to have Modica Group sponsor future events also.

I'm keen. Will come time

I'm keen. Will come time permitting.

Event time change

Josh Waihi's picture

I've been told from other user group organizers that 6pm is a better time so I'm gonna go with 6pm. Guess it means you can come straight from work without having to wait around.

Talks so far:

  • Packaging & Deployment with Drush and Features by Josh Waihi
  • Openlayers KML by Mike Haworth

Could we get one more talk and some discussion topics?

Please RSVP on Facebook

Sweet as, I'm not wanting you to register but it was the best way I knew how to get an idea of numbers. I'll just +2 the number of people that RSVP on facebook.

Drupal Meet-up This Thursday!

Josh Waihi's picture

Looks like its gonna be a great turn out for the Wellington Drupal Meet-up. We've got two speakers lined up:

Mike Haworth - Open Layers and KML
Mike is a keen Wellington Mountain Biker and uses Open Layers and KML with Drupal and PostgreSQL to map his and others biking treks around the Wellington Landscape. See http://www.gamma.net.nz/content/tracks-data-displayed-map

Josh Waihi - Drupal Packaging & Deployment
Josh is a Drupal 7 Core maintainer, PostgreSQL Driver Maintainer to be specfic. Josh will be talking about the various development situations you deal with as a Drupal developer and how best to deal with them with community contributed tools.

There is room for one more speaker if anyone would like to share something. It could be anything from something specific that you do with Drupal to a showcase of a site you've built with Drupal.

We're also looking for particular topics to talk about after the talks. Drupal 7 is definitely a topic worth discussing. Some forethought would help. So please send me a message or comment below. See you all on Thursday!

What time is it on?

ryank76's picture

Josh, your post above says 7pm but the Facebook event says 6pm.

6pm!

Josh Waihi's picture

Sorry, changed it to make it early so there is no waiting around. 6pm is the start date!

Sorry - cancel me

Thanks goes out to Catalyst for the room & pizza.

Catalyst is happy to provide

Josh Waihi's picture

Catalyst is happy to provide the venue for future Drupal Talk sessions. Though we'd like help from other companies/contractors towards cost for beer and pizza (or what ever alternative).

Thanks to everyone who turned up. Was a good number of people. Good to see a strong number of people interested in Drupal in Wellington.

Catalyst is looking for Drupal developers at the moment so if Catalyst is place you think you might like to work, please feel free to get in touch with me, we can have a chat over a beer or something.

I'll chuck my slides up on http://geek.joshwaihi.com today at somestage.

Hey Josh, thanks for

capuchin's picture

Hey Josh, thanks for organising the meetup, and thanks to everyone for showing up.

Here are the slides to my Openlayers talk:
Openlayers_KML_PostGIS.pdf

The openlayers_kml module is here:
http://github.com/capuchin/openlayers-kml

The current version of openlayers_kml works with openlayers v1. I will push the updated version that works with openlayers v2 soon.
