First Step

Events happening in the community are now at Drupal community events on www.drupal.org.

Hi,

Thanks to Fouad for taking the initiative of setting this up, personally I think this proposal will be a win-win for everyone, wondering if anyone foresees any down side of doing what is being proposed here?

The 8 project ideas outlined in the group page seems a good starting point to tackle them one by one, I will also add the considerations of legal review etc.

So where do we start? I think a few key steps are:

  • Agree on the commission and Drupal contribution model
  • Membership model ( Should this be an open market or suppliers have to meet certain qualifications to keep the market place quality up?)
  • Discuss and Implement the facilities required for this market place

Civicspace has already started Civicspace associate program, how these two initiatives can benefit from each others? will be an interesting discussions as well.

Most likely we can help out on the hosting platform and be one of the sponsors or key facilitator to build this Drupal market place.

Cheers,
Jenny

I suggest using something as

I suggest using something as a rating system to keep the quality up. The down side is that if some new developer who is really good will be beaten by a mediocre developer with a really good rating. To counter this I suggest using some kind of peer review too.

I think the commission model is nice. We can use it to fund other drupal development or just have bounty projects.

Rating system & group project

finch's picture

Rating system is a great idea. I like what rentacoder.com has but would also like something that can help to faciliate a group project.

So a project management type of environment would also be nice.

Right says Jenny!

Oops, still getting the feel of group management, like i was mentioning that Jenny brings with her the experience of the previous activity for that matter, I would love to work with Jenny in helping evolve the vision as well as bring into it the previous input.

I actually discussed two areas here:
What we see here is developing from a CMS core certain modules that make up the market place.

1. Membership System

If you visit websites like scriptlance.com or getafreelancer.com, you will be able to see that there are always two types of memberships, one is the basic one and the second one is the special one.
Regarding the rating system.

2. Membership System

The rating system should be there by default so that the service buyer can make his choice of service provider on the basis of the rating from others or initially by the admin team.

We can also create a sort of committee to review the initial members so that we can take them into rating, secondly we should also keep a check and balance that two budies don't pop up as a buyer and seller making a deal to sell and buy services to increase the ratings both as a buyer and seller!

Yes the rating system should be part of a larger Project Management Architecture that we can design through a process pattern map that outlines the process of the system. I hope we have some very strong software design/skilled buddies so that we can actually draw out this plan. Keep it up Jenny and keep bringing in the previous discussion items so that we can cover all those, we will also manage to draw out a Project Charter.

Here we go!

next step :-)

Great to see some thoughts are flowing, wondering should we also start a few separate threads to have some focused discussions? We can have the following topics to collect some inputs as a start:

  • Type of services to be provided
  • The business model
  • The governance process (the service/project lifecycle workflow and use case scenarios)
  • Software and features needed for this market place system

Jenny

Very Important - yes

fouadbajwas's picture

As Jenny Mentioned:

* Type of services to be provided

1. The Marketplace
2. The Job Market for fixed Drupal Consulting Jobs or Job Hunts/Resume Submission/Hire
3. The Drupal Business Model Buy/Sell Board
4. The Drupal Custom Model Buy/Sell Board

Questions
Should

* The business model

1. The Fees Structure
2. Commission Models
3. Legal Advisory
4. Banking Information
5. The office in the US and then expansion of the office to Canada, South America, Europe, Australia, Asia?
6. Pilot Office and Operation Director

* The governance process (the service/project lifecycle workflow and use case scenarios)

1. Architecture of governance
2. Formation of a LLC or a Corporation?
3. And all of the operational model

* Software and features needed for this market place system

Thats where all of us fall in and the modules and snippets we design also come out for sale thus including a variety of modifications to existing modules

Jenny we will need a private place where only subscribers of this list will be allowed to contribute and share important roles in the advisory committee, technical committee. The scope of this whole initiative is very big and since we have the more practical Drupalists here, we are in a full go mission mode!

I extend my veto that Jenny takes up the important role of directorship of the project? Yes Jenny?

thinking about resources

sime's picture

Just 2c, and a promise to follow what is discussed in case I can help.

I would use (and hypothetically contribute) resources such as:

  • user requirement spec questionaire's
  • templates of legal documents
  • (opt-in) customer registration for tracking long-term drupal satisfaction ratings

I don't know about the whole money thing. It should be enough that any code and resources created through such a system should be kept GPL. When Dries decides the community needs a new server, or he needs some dental work, he will say so and I will donate! :-)
