I'd like to modify the event page, with the ability to search year and month, for a business directory. Instead of a "year" drop-down I'd like "sector" and instead of "month" I'd like "category." How can this be accomplished?

what you aren't asking, although not too complicated, it pretty much a whole lesson in drupal.
First, I would suggest that you do not modify the existing event content type.
Create a new content type following this read http://drupal.org/handbook/modules/cck
Understand how drupal core taxonomy works, so you can add your "categories" http://drupal.org/handbook/modules/taxonomy
