Notes from July meeting, planning for August

Events happening in the community are now at Drupal community events on www.drupal.org.

We had a great turnout (13, as I recall) at Coworking Rochester (@coworkingroc) last night! Many thanks to David for his hospitality.

@tedbow gave his Views talk that he prepared for the upcoming DrupalCamp NYC (complete with some great demo examples!), and I thought it was a great intro, right through Relationships and Args. Hot awesomeness!

I (@fending) gave a little spiel on "when Views isn't enough", a little snapshot of a large project I was on for a while that used SQL queries from custom modules (because the Relationships required would render non-performant queries), an Ajax callback module that did some awesome stuff with those, and a little tidbit on hook_views_query_alter() that I discovered during that same project.

We talked about a few other Drupal-y things... If you remember some more details, please post them here!

PLANNING

So August... Sticking with our "third Tuesday" rule, that would mean a next meeting on Tuesday, 17 August 2010. Following the "alternating city" plan, this would be in Buffalo. Actual location is missing -- suggestions? Any other feedback on what could make the next meeting better? Post them. See you next month!

suggested preso for next time

Who's interested in a panel discussion entitled, "Creative & Development Processes for Drupal: What Works"? We have several dozen members... surely there are some people interested in this (or at least what others do), right?

Further, is anybody interested in participating in the panel?

Buffalo meeting

arilikeairy's picture

Is this group open? I'm new to the Buffalo area but I've been working in Drupal for a few years and would like to connect to a local group.

Also, in what kinds of places do you normally meet / how many people attend? I might know a few spaces.

Thanks!
Ari

welcome!

Yep, we sure are open. We do ask that people sign up for events using the Sign Up button here on g.d.o. for each event, and you're certainly welcome to step up and present if you'd like. We usually try to schedule at least one presentation per event. I say "usually", but we've been meeting monthly since May 2010. The meeting locations have been: a college, a screening room, and a coworking facility (in Rochester). The group is definitely split between two cities -- come on out to an event and you can get the long-form on that history.

In-person attendance runs from 12-16, online attendance (we use gotomeeting with increasing effectiveness!) is 1-4. The group has been getting new faces lately, and a whole different set of faces out in Rochester, so I think we'll be at 24 or so by the end of the year. We're definitely open to new places if there's a fit!

Looking for space for 17 Aug (7pm) meeting

fending's picture

Hi, all. July's meeting was in Rochester, so I think we should head back Buffalo way for August. As usual, we're looking for a meeting space. Hopefully, this won't be a perpetual problem in Buffalo, and I'm still exploring some options there. Past venues in Buffalo have been:

  1. Medaille College, Buffalo <- Not an option; Registrar's office has insurance/bonding issues with ext group meetings
  2. HD Video, Williamsville <- this was a nice venue, I'm open to using it again - thoughts?

Features we need are:
- relatively easy access at and after 7pm
- some parking
- good wifi
- seating for 12-18 people, based on past attendance
- a projector if possible (though we can arrange that separately)

If I don't have any suggestions by 10 Aug, I'm either canceling for this month or, last-ditch, polling the group about having everyone use gotomeeting (ack).

HD Video was nice

HD Video was easy to find and the facility was very nice. No objection to having meeting there again.

I liked HD Video as well.

HD was not avbl

I realize now that I didn't reply to this original thread re: HD Video Cafe for the August meeting. They're not available on Tuesday nights anymore as they host a Gamer Night from 6-9pm.

Just found this group, 1 day to late to go to this months meetup... What are the plans for September? Is there any other places where WNY Drupalers are collaborating.
I found:
1) facebook group http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=111821745507258 (Western New York Drupal User Group)
2) twitter account http://twitter.com/wnydrupal
3) Drupal Groups http://groups.drupal.org/western-new-york & http://groups.drupal.org/rochester-ny (merging? http://groups.drupal.org/node/69793 )
4) where else??

Freedom Isn't Free

Welcome, Austin.

The meeting just happened last night, so we're taking a couple weeks to regroup. This last cycle, I got super busy and we had no venue until another WNYDUG member stepped up five days before the event.

Generally speaking, we met the 3rd Tuesday of every month. That would make the next meeting Tuesday 21 Sep, 2010 @ 7pm. The city for the last one was Niagara Falls, so we're kind of up in the air over Buffalo v. Rochester (v. ???) for September. Please read some back posts on prior venues & meetings. Cole's in Buffalo (on Elmwood near Buffalo State) offered to host us, I just need to follow up with them next week while I'm on vacation.

Also, you're right that the Rochester group is in the process of merging into this one, but for that to move forward somebody (maybe me, maybe somebody else) needs to reroll the OG patch that greggles pointed out in this post: http://groups.drupal.org/node/69833#comment-213723

Oh, and there's a LinkedIn group: http://groups.drupal.org/node/61003 -- if we missed any social media outlets, let us know!
