Merge Drupal skydivers into Drupalfit

Events happening in the community are now at Drupal community events on www.drupal.org.

I think one group for sports in general is good enough - we've got http://groups.drupal.org/fit

good point

Excellent point, Greg.
I never even considered using the FIT group. On one hand these people are tempting and defying death more so than trying to stay fit. LOL! Nonetheless, I rather like the idea of taking the skydiving conversations and having them in front of the FIT group where I'm quite sure that all will enjoy reading it!
I've already spoken with Linda and she agrees that it makes sense.
Please remove this group.

The existing group should maybe change title; it's not clear (at least to me) that fit refers to all sports in general, and when I search for sport, I only get a group (http://groups.drupal.org/sports-club-league-management).

I moved the existing post in Drupal skydivers in Drupal Fit. I marked the group Drupal skydivers as unpublished, as I don't know if we delete groups, in such cases.

+1 as much as it's cool to

+1 as much as it's cool to have a few more "social" or "hobby" groups on g.d.o, it seems best not to flood it with these sorts!

I disagree with this

Skydiving has absolutely nothing to do with fitness; gravity does the job for you, then you grab a burger. Its title is meant to invite people into an activity that is meant to happen with every DrupalCon for example. reading the title gives you the idea to join and perhaps try this crazy activity (not, emphasis on not, a sport, by any stretch of the imagination). Frankly I never even received teh news that my group had been activated after it was first denied. Could we just set it up once and then leave it be É Too much electrons have been swirling around this issue already.

I met a few more people

MisterSpeed's picture

I met a few more people interested in joining at the last DrupalCampMontreal. I do not understand the reasons for standing in the way of creating a group that people want and/or find appealing to eventually join, and some grumbles were heard when I mentioned that our petition for a group was repeatedly either denied or demoted, as if a disconnect between wants and management was to be expected, which is troubling as members of this group obviously want to do their most enlightened best.

DrupalFit is a very poor fit for a non-fitness activity, period. To saddle them with skydivers is as logical as merging Titanium API and High Performance on the basis that fast websites and mobile apps would somehow find a some eventual but ill-defined relationship. Hang around a dropzone and you will see that the number of out-of-shape people is staggering; why ? There is virtually no significant effort involved. It simply is not a fitness-related activity at all, no more so than, say, car driving.

People need a place to sign up, meet each other, express interest. It will not be a very busy group at first, but it will be one that will draw its own membership with time as people, during the warm seasons, team up to meet each other at various DrupalCons and DrupalCamps. Please, please go with the desires of the community. Having people who do not participate in an activity stand in its way based on a misunderstanding of it is a thoroughly frustrating and disempowering development. Silence on this issue will only lead to options that do not involve gdo, creating a precedent; what it will not do is lead to a burying of the issue.

As a manager of Drupal Fit

As a manager of Drupal Fit, I'm okay with the proposed merge. Rather, since the Drupal skydivers group was rejected, I'm happy for Drupal Fit to be a container for skydiving-related posts (even if it's only for the time being).

As to whether there's a non-overlap, Drupal Fit isn't necessarily for sports -- it's for coordinating fitness-related events at Drupal conferences and in local user groups. I haven't been skydiving myself but I hear there's an element of mental fitness involved.
