List of decent directories

Inspiration always welcome.

I'll try offering up some inspiration.... sort of encourage the fellas and gals in the trenches like you encourage me, keep each other going....

Here's where my inspiration is at. I am thinking all this media consolidation is happening because of the profits to be made. Supposedly newspapers are high profit businesses, so the big fish eat them, wring out even more profit, and we the people are supposedly suffering from lack of original media content as a result of the media consolidations.

So, I am trying to make my own media, in my case, a local directory that kicks butt over any mega directory, so far as my city goes. Since I can walk the streets in my city, and there are only a few main streets, I am thinking I should be able to make a much better directory than any bot can make. I am doing it as a hobby, but I don't mind admitting that I dream about Rupert Murdoch having to pay my syndication fee to carry some of the best media coming out of my city.

My directory is a study in the micro-directory, as opposed to the gigantic directories. My inspiration comes from focusing on a directory for a relatively tiny area, just a few square miles, which happen to be high-value square miles (or so goes my business model). I am fortunate that my whole city can be covered with only a few thousand entries. The goal is to make this directory special, taking advantage of the fact I live and work in the target area, writing my own listings, taking my own pictures, and ultimately having a style and communication ability to the community that sets it apart. The directory is to be the foundation. At this point, I am just getting started with Drupal, and I want to say I think the Drupal world and movement are phenomenally great. I feel we all are part of one of the greatest flowering of human creativity ever.

Maybe being a beginner makes my inspiration need high right now.. I am determined to make this site come out awesome. So, tearing it apart now is part of the plan, till it starts looking awesome.

Well, I am d@mned glad to meet you. My sympathies regarding the tech issues. I think that is part of the process, how we learn best. I hope you didn't hold any of your frustration in either, but rather beat the hell out of the software that went and acted dumb on you. That sh!t pi$$e$ me off. Persevere, it will pay. This hard work is part of what makes it valuable.

Regarding data entry........... geezzzzzzzzzz I did an all nighter, and all I had to show for the effort was a few listings. I still futz and putz.

Tonight, I went down main street, handing out cards to the businesses listed, letting them know I have made listings for them. Response was good. People see the need... they realize the gigantic bot directories are not really giving the local flavor.

Driving around town, I am thinking it will take the better part of a year... at some point, businesses will be bummed about not being listed.. I figure that is the critical mass I am looking for.

My directory was geared for businesses and service providers biased towards certain ethnic minorities. Lucky you guys have to drive around in one city, I think I will have to be all over the country, hunting down these particular businesses.
