Subtheme Problem with Front Page

I am running OP 2.1 on Ubuntu 10.04. Prior to my subtheming effort, OP was working nicely.

Over the past day or so, I've read through all the OP documentation. One section that sparked me to action was the section on sub-theming. Before I go about customizing the look and feel of my site, I want to create a sub-theme as advised in the docs.

So, I followed the documentation here and created a very simple sub-theme directory in sites/all/themes. Inside the sites/all/themes/mytheme subdirectory, I created just a mytheme.info file using exactly the content suggested in the documentation.

When I enable my new subtheme, the front page is broken in that the "content" no longer appears. The left and right sidebars and the header and footer appear, but the "content" is missing. The content should be my blog entries.

I inspected the page-front.tpl.php file and found that it does not print $content at all. It only prints $over_content. I find this unusual, but I accept that there must be a reason. However, I cannot for the life of me figure out why creating a sub-theme and enabling it would make the over_content region empty.

Help appreciated.

I did the Ardi subtheme creation from those instructions about a week ago, and all seemed to go well. Can send my files if it would help?

Do you have an empty

Do you have an empty page-front.tpl.php override in your subtheme by any chance? What files are there and what's their content?

Less likely to be this, but I thought I'd also ask: you are administering your blocks through Context just like in the provided examples, not through the core Site Building > Blocks screen (which is theme dependent)?
